  • Turtle pond in the winter?

Hello. I have a 160 gallon turtle pond outside. I live in Florida but the weather has been in the 40s this week. What is something I can do besides a heater to help my turtles stay warm? Can I put hay inside the pond that they can hide and sleep in for warmth? Or are there any other quick ideas like that,??? Please let me know!

  • Turtle in glue trap?

Okay.. So my uncle does landscaping.. And a client of his had glue traps outside his home to catch and kill the wild lizards (dumb rich snobs who don't want them outside their home.. Ugh) well..there must have been a turtle nest nearby, because I guess a few baby mud turtles were caught in the traps. I was told all of them were dead except for the one my uncle gave me. I'm not sure what he used to get the glue off of him, but it seems to be off for the most part. I'm not sure of there is any on his mouth though. And the couple times I've picked him up, his right eye has been closed. Is there anything I can do for the little guy to help remove the glue from those sensitive areas? I don't think I have any reptile vets where I live. And I'm not sure what they'd do for him as he's only the size of a dime. But if there's something I can do from home, I'll do it. He's a cutie and seems to be pretty feisty. I want to help him however I can. Please any advice would be appreciated.

  • Spider Identification help?

Okay... I live in south Florida, and I came across a hugeeee brown spider at my job. My coworker and I are terrified of spiders, so we did kill it, but I snapped a couple (not so great) photos before.

    http://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/nschneebe...

    http://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/nschneebe...

    http://i892.photobucket.com/albums/ac126/nschneebe...

I'm sorry, I know these aren't good pics to go off of at all. But all I remember was it was darkish brown in color... Almost the size of my hand when stretched out... And it seemed very aggressive (it ran at me when I was spraying it :S) my guess was a brown recluse, but i don't know if they get that big. I looked up pictures of brown recuses and that was what it looked like the most To me.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

  • My dog is shaking and Panting?

My dog is shaking and panting a lot. She seems completely terrified of something. The only two things I could think of are this..... I closed a couple doors in the house because im watching a movie in the other room and didn't want to disturb my family, and I thought maybe the sounds seemed off to her and are scaring her? Or... I have a pregnant guinea pig due to have babies any day now. And my dog was going into my room and hiding and trying to get me to go in there with her... So idk if maybe she senses something is going to happen? I'm not sure.. But I'm worried about her. She's glued to my side right now. Let me know your thoughts please!

  • Pregnant guinea pig question?

Hello..I am helping a friend out by rehoming a bunch of guinea pigs. They were given to him...and they had a ton of babies. So I took all the young ones home, and the two adult males, and I left behind 5 very much pregnant piggies. Before rehoming anyone, I sexed the babies, and discovered I had accidently taken home a young pregnant female. I'm very attached to this girlie who I've name Momma, so I want to make her as comfortable and as healthy as possible for her and her babies. So I'm giving the piggies hay and pellets..and I've offered fresh veggies a couple times. I just want to know what I should feed her daily, and how much? I know they need to have vitamin C and that Momma needs to have more than normal. What foods have vitamin C in them? or should I just buy vitamin C pills? Any info would be great.

Also is there a way to know how far along she is? She's definitely pregnant and has a big belly, but not nearly as big as some others I have seen..but then again she's also younger and smaller.

  • Snowflake eel pet store questions..?

    Please read whole question...

I've always found eels to be really cool animals..and I've always wanted to own one, and I thought snowflake eels were very pretty. But I've never had a saltwater tank before. So I was at the pet store the other day and in the freshwater section..they were selling an eel that they had labeled as a "freshwater snowflake eel"....now it was definitely an eel, not just a fish that looked like an eel, it definitely had all eel features. And it did look a lot like a snowflake eel. But upon looking them up, I found that everyone said a freshwater SNOWFLAKE eel does not exist.

Well I was wondering, is the pet store just filled with a bunch of idiot employees? Or are they trying to just trick the customers?

Or can snowflake eels tolerate freshwater while still young??

I ask this because I saw they also sold "freshwater puffer fish" but when I looked those up too, it said that puffer fish are a saltwater fish, but while they're still babies/young, they will tolerate fresh water, but eventually the tank will need to be converted to saltwater. Is this the same for the eel??

    Thanks =]

  • Becoming a veterinarian questions?

    Serious answers only please...

All my life I've wanted to be a vet..but as I got older I kind of steered away from it a little bit..but I've been thinking about it a lot lately, and I think I just don't understand a whole lot about the schooling process, and that's why I'm not sure about wanting to do it or not.

So that's why I want to know.. what is the process of vet school?

Like..what do I need to do before I apply to vet school?

I've heard of "pre-vet" programs...is that something to HELP me get into vet school? Or a requirement?

I'm already 21 years old and I feel like I've wasted so much time already, so I want to start getting things done so I can apply.

A little background on myself, I've taken a few main college courses (math, science etc) but no animal related classes because my college does not offer them. I live in florida..I know UF has a vet program, but I dont know if I want to go there or not. I'd like to go closer to NY/pennsylvania area...but any advice on any colleges would be great.

I've been working around animals since I was 12. I volunteered for the humane society from ages 12-14..I got a job in a pet store at age 17 or 18...I've worked for an exotic animal sanctuary for the last 3 years...I also work for a dog/cat boarding facility, and worked for a different one before that. Other than that I've owned a variety of animals since I was 6, and love to read on how to care for different types of animals (even if I dont own one).

Another question...there's a college in Gainesville called the santa fe community college that has a zoo animal technology program...its a 2 year program, and this is what they say about the associate of science degree you get at the end of the program.....

"The Associate of Science Degree (AS) in Zoo Animal Technology is what we call a "terminal" degree. What this means is that it does not transfer readily to most four year institutions. To further your education you can either get your Associate of Arts (AA) Degree along with our AS degree and then go to the college of your choice or you can go to one of the three colleges that we have a cooperative program with. These are: Friends University, Wichita KS; SUNY Oswego, Oswego NY; or the University of West Florida, Pensacola FL."

I'm not all that sure what an associate of science degree does for me...does that sound like it's just a waste of my time? Or is that something that would help me get into vet school???

ANDDD....If I were to become a vet, I'd be more interested in exotics and zoo animals like big cats, primates, etc...so is there something I need to know as far as how to do that? Like do I take a different type of course? Or is that just additional schooling?

Okay sorry this is so long...Any advice really about any aspect of vet school would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance =]

  • orphaned baby bunny...........???

I'm currently caring for an orphaned baby bunny..it may be around 10 days old now..I've been reading up on the whole subject about feeding the babies adult female rabbit droppings? Is this something that is necessary? Or do they sell something that contains this bacteria that can substitute it? If I did not supply this, will the bunny definitely die? Any advice would be great.

  • Turtle tank worm problem??????

I've been having problems keeping my turtle tank clean...it gets green after a week. So I moved my turtles to another container with clean water so I could clean their tank. I got really busy so the water was sitting in the tank for maybe a week. I did a complete cleanup because it was really gross..I scrubbed down the tank..and I cleaned out the filters. When I put new water in..the water was clean..but when I started up my filters again, thousands of tiny worms came out and were swimming around. They were maybe 2-3 mm long..and had the thickness of hair. Any idea of what they could be? The tank water is sitting with some bleach to kill them..and I'm going to keep cleaning out the tank until there are none left. But I've never noticed this before...is it just from dirty water sitting there? Or do you think my turtles have some type of worms? They're all eating normally. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

And down the line maybe even data entry and other computer stuff. Just wondering if anyone is someones "personal assistant" like this.. And how would I work out payments? Should she pay me after every job or give me a weekly pay for working for her all week? • Does anyone know what this may be????

Okay..so on sunday I woke up with really puffy eyes and the feeling of absolute exhaustion...I thought maybe I just hadn't gotten enough sleep because later in the day I had some coffee and I felt a little better.....but then the next day I woke up and I had a bad sore throat..my eyes still appeared puffy and I was still exhausted but now I also felt sllightly achy all over. My boss allowed me to go home an hour early..so I went home and laid down for a bit. Then I went out with my parents to kind of just get some fresh air before I had to be back at work. Well gradually after a couple hours passed, I got more and more achier...my entire body was just hurting every time I moved. I felt sick to my stomach like I was going to vomit..I had the chills...And I just felt awful. So I took a nap for the last hour before I went to work. Then I had to have my dad drive me in because I was way too sick to drive. I barely remember working at all I was so out of it. I had my bf pick me up and take me home and I just passed out on the couch. I was still having the chills...then I just remember my mom coming in and telling me even through my clothes she could feel my body was like burning on fire..so she took my temperature and it was over 102...I refused to get up from the couch..but after awhile she made me get up and she had to help me walk to the bathroom. After the shower I felt a little better because my fever had broken..but I still felt terribly achy so I went to bed....And I woke up this morning feeling a bit better..I still feel a little achy,...and I have like a lot of tension in my head..and I'm all stuffed up...and I still have the sore throat.

Does anybody know what this is? Does it sound like the flu??

Well one thing I should mention was I was around my bf the last week or so...and he's been really sick...he went to the VNA bus and they told him he had bronchitis....We never kissed or anything since he's been sick but we've been around each other. So I'm sure that was a factor in it..but Idk because I didn't have any of the same symptoms as him?

Just any advice would be appreciated...If I keep getting worse I will see a doctor...but if I continue getting better as I have been I'll just keep taking dayquil/nyquil and see where it gets me.

  • Baby sulcata tortoise diet question?

We have a baby sulcata tortoise. He actually got away from us outside and was missing for a month. We were heartbroken, but he's home now! Now he's obviously been living off of grasses and weeds and flowers. But I of course am getting Mixed answers online. A friend of mine whose father in law breeds sulcatas says only romaine lettuce and liquid vitamins foe the first year. But I don't agree with that. His babies didn't look all that great from what I could see. In my opinion, a wild sulcata would eat the stuff he finds outside, so is a grass/hay/weed/flower diet suitable? With veggies as just an OCCASIONAL treat? What do you guys think?

  • Questions about thyroid disease in dogs?

Just a curious question. This isn't my dog. But the dog has some bald patches around the back of it's head/neck and it's shoulders. He's a little chubby but not by much.. And it's a pitbull. And his skin seems dry and dandruff-y. Just wondering if that Sounds like a thyroid problem. The only thing is.. Is it's a 9 Month old puppy. Could that happen that young? They didn't get the puppy too long ago. And it still need all it's shots as far as I know.. And it needs to be neutured. Could it be some other disease from not having been vaccinated yet? The dog spends a lot of time outdoors too. Let me know :)

  • Lovebird question? ???????

Okay. Here's the whole story. I used to have a lovebird years ago who i got when he was a baby.. And he bonded to me very well. He was so affectionate. And recently I bought a new lovebird baby. But unfortunately she died a week later in my hands...because of the terrible petstore i got her from. :( but now my brother and his gf surprised me with 2 new lovebirds. They're very cute. But I'm worried because I always wanted a single lovebird again like my first one because it was bonded to me. I really want the birds to be friendly and affectionate. I don't know how long the birds have been together but I'm under the impression that the pet store just got them in. I can tell the birds already like each other so I understand why my brother didn't want to separate them and I know I don't wanna do that either. But are there any things that I can do to get two friendly and affectionate lovebirds? If it helps at all.. When I went to move them to their cage, even thoughthey were scared they didn't bite and weren't aggressive if that's a good sign at all?

  • Question about my teeth?

Okay I have a couple really bad teeth in my mouth.. And I know they both need root canals. I'm just curious.. Which would be the cheaper way to go. Get a root canal and a crown put on? Or pulling the tooth completely and getting a fake tooth put in or whatever it is they do. I don't have dental insurance. But I need to go badly. Also.. In the long run I'd like to get invisalign to straighten my teeth a bit. I dunno if a fake tooth would interfere with that? Anyway. Any info would be greatly appreciated

  • If you could ask three questions about your life?

My aunt is having a psychic party at your house..and I've decided to go just to see....she will talk to all of us but we also get to talk to her privately and ask 3 questions. Whether or not you believe in psychics...what are 3 (SERIOUS) questions you'd ask a psychic to answer for you? 3 things you'd want to be answered most.
