  • Jeremy Irons reading of "Four Quartets"?

In 2014, the BBC released a recording of Jeremy Irons reading T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets" on its website. The recording is now unavailable on both the he BBS and Jeremy Irons' websites. Does anyone know where the recording is archived? A Google search wasn't helpful. Thank you in advance.

  • Order of whisky in a Scotch-tasting party?

I'd like to host a single-malt Scotch-tasting party. I read the following online: "When sampling your selection of whiskeys, start with the lightest, freshest one and move through to the heaviest, sweetest or strongest one. This is the same as in a wine tasting, where you start with the whites before moving to the reds and then dessert wines. If you do it the other way around, the stronger flavors will taint the palate and the subtleties of the lighter whiskeys are in danger of being lost."

Could someone with more experience help me order the following whiskeys according to the guidelines above?

    Jameson Irish Whiskey

    Dalwhinnie 15 year

    Laphroaig Triple Wood

    Laphroaig Quarter Cask

We also have some blends: Evan Williams and Johnny Walker Gold. Would you include those? If so, in what order?

    Thanks for your help!

  • Ideas for excess sweet cherries?

I'm looking for ideas to use cherries from a super-abundant sweet cherry tree. I've heard you can't make preserves from sweet cherries. (Apparently this is because you add less sugar than you would to tart cherries--sugar acting as a preservative.)

We don't have a deep freezer or a food dehydrator, so preserving them in bulk isn't really possible.

I really hate to waste such a wonderful resource, so any ideas for using a large cherry harvest would be appreciated! :-)

  • Replacement for Levi's 501 Women's Jeans?

I was sad to learn that Levi's has discontinued making women's 501 jeans. I've worn these for years and love the way they fit (roomy through the thighs and butt, sit a bit loosely at waist). Plus, I really like button-fly jeans.

Did anyone else have to switch from women's 501 jeans to another brand? If so, what did you choose? I need straight-leg jeans, no "mommy" darts in the front, and no low-waist I'm-trying-to-look-like-a-teenager fashions. Reasonable price and good quality are also important.

    Thanks!

  • Favorite Wedding Movies?

What are your favorite wedding movies? Specifically movies that have lots of wedding dresses and bridesmaids dresses in them. (I'm happily married, but I'm a real sucker for beautiful weddings -- and wedding dresses!)

Mine, in no particular order, are:

    Four Weddings and a Funeral

    The Wedding Planner

27 Dresses (love the bridesmaids' dresses!)

    Made of Honor

The Bachelor (hundreds of dresses in that one!)

    Any movies I missed?

  • Avoiding Panhandlers in Germany?

I'm an American living in Germany. Because of the long commute to my job, I spend waaaay too much time waiting for trains at various train stations in Nordrhein-Westphalia. At least once a day someone approaches me with a hard-luck story about "forgetting" his train fare or something similar (It's the same people over and over for the most part). However, most people standing around me DO NOT get asked.

In the States, simply looking unapproachable (wearing headphones and sunglasses, not smiling, etc.) was enough to avoid these encounters. However, in Germany there must be some unwritten rule I'm violating, because these folks gravitate to me even in a crowd. I'm dressed like the people around me, and without speaking (which I don't), no one should be able to determine I'm American.

What's the secret of looking "unapproachable" in Germany?

  • Index of Charities: Efficient Charities in Africa/India?

I'd like to donate to a charity -- preferably in India or an African country -- that works with children. I've heard that there is a service that allows you to research different charities and see how efficiently they use money and how much of your donation actually goes to the people you want to help.

Does anyone know where I can access this index?

    Thanks!

  • Orthodox Catholics: SSPX and the Latin Mass?

My husband was transferred to Germany. I'd like to attend a Latin Mass on Sundays, but the only ones offered in our area are SSPX. Is this allowable for a Roman Catholic in full communion with the Church? I've heard varying things about whether SSPX is a schismatic group; however, some say that the Masses are still valid, some say they are not.

Please only answer if you're familiar with SSPX. Thanks!

  • Female feline siblings not getting along?

I have two domestic shorthair cats, both 8 1/2 years old. They are female litter mates and have lived together all their lives. They've never gotten along really well, but you could often see them lying on opposite ends of the couch or sniffing each others' butts (ewww) when they were both awake and walking around. They had some territorial moments (hissing and growling), but mostly they ignored each other.

Lately, however, things have been getting worse. One of them hisses and howls when her sister comes around. I've been keeping the unhappy one in my home office when I'm in there, but this isn't a good solution because I can't stay in my office all day! If I make her go out, though, she sits in a tight little knot in a corner of the house and keeps watch for her sister. She won't even go to sleep!

Has anyone else had this problem? BTW, both cats are spayed and have been for years.

  • Election civility: What happened?

I read about a guy whose house was shot at because he had political signs in his yard.

    http://www.shortnews.com/start.cfm?id=74259

What happened to election-time civility? I know we all have strong opinions about the upcoming election -- and for the sake of argument, let's assume that something like this has happened to a dem -- but what's going on that we can't all peacefully express our political preferences without fear of being shot at, vandalized, or robbed?*

*Thoughtful answers only. Political diatribes -- from either side -- will NOT get best answer. Thanks.

  • Question about copyright and public domain?

How do you know when a book or lecture that you've found on the internet is in the public domain? Even if it's copyrighted, is it OK to print a copy for your personal use?

Also, what is the educational exception to copyright law? I understand that if you're a teacher, there are times when you can use copyrighted material for educational purposes only. How do you know when you can do this?

    Thanks!

  • Phil Collins / Genesis song title?

Does anyone else remember a song from the mid- to late-80s by either Phil Collins or Genesis in which the first line of the chorus was:

"We said hello as we turned the key."

I distinctly remember this song from hearing it as a teen, but I don't remember the title.

Anyone know the song title / album?

    Thanks!

  • TEFL Online Certification?

My husband and I moved to Germany about a month ago. There is a dearth of open jobs in the small town in which we live. One bright spot, however, is that a local community college is seeking a native English speaker to teach ESL (English as a Second Language) courses. The dark spot is that they are looking for TESL certification.

I've checked for "classroom" TESL courses, but there are none in our area of Germany.

Does anyone have experience with online TESL certification? If so, what was your experience with the course material? What was the cost of your course? Did employers mind that your certification was from an online course?

    Thanks!

  • Question about creating your own room border?

I'd like to create some room border for my husband's office, using a plain white store-bought border and inscribing a quotation he really likes.

    1) How do you measure the space vis-a-vis the length of the quotation to find out what size "font" you should use?

    2) Also, if you aren't a calligrapher, how can you "write" on the border and still have it look nice?

I'd really appreciate any help with this! Thanks!

  • Renting movies by mail in Germany?

My husband is stationed in Germany right now. Is there a Netflix-type service in Germany that he could use to get and return DVDs by mail? He has a "real" (non-APO) address.

If anyone has experience with something like this, how much does it cost? Which service would you recommend? Did you have any service problems?

    Thanks!

  • TEFL test?

I am interested in teaching English as a second language. I have searched the internet for a site that would allow me to register just to take the TEFL test itself -- not a preparatory class.

Which board administers this test? How do I contact them to find out what the test costs, etc.?

    Thanks!

  • Need help with Liturgy of the Hours ("Shorter Christian Prayer")?

Does anyone on here use the four-week psalter called "Shorter Christian Prayer"? I bought mine used (red cover edition), and the first few pages were torn out, so I don't have instructions on how to use it (this book specifically, not just the liturgy of the hours, which I understand in theory).

There is the four-week psalter in the front and sections with different prayers(?) for liturgical seasons in the back.

How do you combine these two? If anyone uses this book, would you include page numbers for today's readings and how you combined the different sections (if you did). Also, what time should one say the morning and evening prayers?

    Thanks in advance!
