Wait, what? Don't get phrase from 1940s comic book?
Context: First issue of Captain America ever. Saboteurs try to kill off an entire army post by putting poison in the soup. As one is about to pour the poison in, it says:
As though pronouncing a benediction, he leered: "As de executioner says to de guy on de hot seat, when he throws in de switch, 'Pardon me for goin' through you' "
Pardon me for going through you? Execution seats? What?

I am selling bracelets made by native Haitian women from a small village where I was interning this summer. 100% of the profits from the bracelets are going back to support the women - they'll use them to feed their families and pay for education for their children. Does this qualify as a nonprofit?

1 AnswerChemistry10 years agoDonations instead of candy?
I want to volunteer in Haiti again, but I need money for the trip. I've got a couple of ideas, but I figure since Halloween's coming up a quick and fun way would be to trick or treat, dressed in my work clothes (boots, bandana, T-shirt of the group I'm going with, khakis) and ask for donations instead of candy. What would your reaction be if I showed up at your door asking for spare change?
4 AnswersHalloween10 years agoShould I take drama next year?
I'm a freshman in the IB program (like AP classes, but a lot more work, basically) and I have to decide classes next year. I already have to take all the required classes, and that means two kind-of hard ones: AP Government and Math Analysis. I'll also be in Band. I have one elective still open.
Right now I'm taking AP World History, one of the more difficult AP classes, and I'm passing with flying colors...I'm at the top of my class and I normally don't work nearly as hard as anyone else to learn the information. I enjoy the challenge and learning all the new things, and it's definitely taught me how to take notes and read and understand a passage.
I'm also taking Band, which I'd argue is even more challenging...I love music but I'm not very talented in it so I have to really push myself to be confident and to pay attention. It's helped me to grow almost as much as doing sports.
I've narrowed down my choices to AP Psychology (from what I've heard, a very fun class and one I would be interested in), AP Euro (basically like AP World: a lot of work but I'd be good at it), or Drama.
My GPA would be dragged down a bit by not taking a weighted course, but I'm not really worried about that...I got a perfect score on the reading section of the PSAT and I'm already getting mail from colleges. Plus, because of IB all of my classes junior and senior year will be weighted, and I'll also be taking classes at a local college.
I really love acting, and I've actually written a play, and the teacher and Drama kids are just amazing people and fun to hang out with. But talking with all my over-achiever friends I feel really lame for even considering it...I mean, I'm the smartest out of all of us and while they're taking AP Euro I just want to act and have fun and grow as a person and experience something instead of just learning from a textbook.
Is it wrong to think that way?
P.S. Yes, I know I could still act in plays and not take Drama as a class. But the thing is, my schedule is often too busy to allow for that (I'm in a whole bunch of sports) and when I do show up to meetings it's like everyone else is a family and I'm the outcast because they all take the class together.
3 AnswersTheater & Acting1 decade agoIs some bone at the tip of my elbow broken?
I was running late to class last week and I totally skidded on the floor, sending myself into an epic fall that ended with me landing basically on my left elbow.
It kind of hurt, like enough to make me wince and kind of be shocked for a few minutes, but I just picked myself up and went to math class (and yes, I did make it to class on time ( ; ).
Anyway, since then my elbow was been kind of hurting...like if I press on it there's a dull pain, like you'd feel from a bruise. I've still been playing lacrosse because I thought it was nothing. And it really hasn't been bothering me...I mean, when we do this exercise where you have to put all your weight on your elbows and that one I have to be careful but I haven't really noticed any pain.
Anyway, elbows are just a really weird part of the body. It's kind of hard to tell if there's something wrong....plus I just got a wart on my other elbow so it's hard to know what's normal anymore...I don't really see any bruises and the skin is a little yellowish....maybe. And it might be swollen. There's nothing that really obviously hurts.
I'm just wondering if it should have been like this for a whole week? I mean, it's gotten a little better but not really.
1 AnswerInjuries1 decade agoMath homework...some weird polynomials?
I already know how to factor and everything but I don't understand how I'm supposed to solve the problem 3x^4 + 15x^2-72 because I'm used to seeing it look like: 3x^2 + 15x -72. How would I go about solving this?
Note: This is for homework but c'mon don't be a jerk and go "oh, do it on your own" I would be doing it I just don't know how.
2 AnswersMathematics1 decade agoCan I legally kill off real celebrities in a work of fiction?
I wrote a novel and am self-publishing it via CreateSpace (basically just so I can say "hey guys, I wrote a novel! Buy it! I'm not expecting to make much money).
Miley Cyrus dies in a car accident midway through (this actually does relate to the plot). The characters mock her for singing badly, etc.
I'm just wondering if there's any way I could get in trouble for killing off a real person in a work of fiction. I know at the beginning of books it says "any resemblance to real persons is entirely coincidental" but is this required?
7 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoBest Chemical Hair Straightener products?
I have very thick, frizzy hair that is wavy. It hasn't been colortreated. What products can I use at home to straighten it? (is it possible to get something that will "fade away" after a while instead of waiting for my hair to grow out again before it returns to normal? I'm just trying this out, so I'd prefer that instead of waiting).
1 AnswerHair1 decade agoPicking a trumpet solo?
Well, we have to do a performance in late April, and we're choosing music now. I'm trying to find some songs...
I've been playing for about half a year now, and I'm about a level 2-3 player. I can hit the F at the top of the staff, and play the A below the staff without too much trouble.
I'm looking for a fairly challenging piece, because I'm willing to spend a lot of time working on it (the songs in our book bore me). My director wants me to avoid sixteenth notes, and I've told you my range already.
So--any suggestions?
1 AnswerPerforming Arts1 decade agoCeleb costume for dance?
We can dress up like a celeb for our dance tonight (i'm in middle school) and earn prizes! Problem is, I don't know who to dress up as.
I LOOK NOTHING LIKE MY AVATAR. I'm not Asian, though I really wish I was. I have slightly tanned skin and blue eyes, and a bad acne problem. I'm a young teen. I have with medium length light brown hair that has blonde highlights. It's very thick, wavy, and frizzy, but I can straighten it or make it super curly if I need to.
My wardrobe-I wear a lot of jeans, I have a cute puffy blue skirt that I like wearing to dances, a lot of tie dye, and a bunch of peasant T's. I don't have any skinny jeans or anything pink (besides a pair of khakis).
Accessories: I have a long blue patterned scarf, a couple of kooky bracelets, and a few tomboyish necklaces, plus a few mood rings and one girly girl necklace. I have glasses that I never wear and I don't wear makeup.
I like dressing up as movie characters, too.
Anyone have any ideas? I'd like it to be a celebrity teens would recognize.
1 AnswerCelebrities1 decade agoWhat do you think of this introduction?
Have you ever felt like you don’t belong, like everyone on this planet who’s wrapped up in all the insignificant troubles of our world is just too normal for you? Have you ever felt like you aren’t supposed to be here, or that you don’t exist?
I have.
It starts when you begin to wonder. I mean, here we are, stuck on this spinning speck in a forgotten corner of the universe that theoretically never ends. Just try to imagine, even if the sheer immensity is beyond understanding, beyond anything really. Billions of trillions of infinite miles, stretching on forever. And no one knows why we’re here or can come up with a plausible reason for it existing. No one’s explored it. And when you really start thinking about it, doesn’t existence suddenly seem impossible, unreal? Aren’t all the “normal” things we concern ourselves with, elections and tests, taxes and wars, suddenly dwarfed by the greatest mysteries of the universe?
And then it really starts getting deeper. It’s like looking at a word written in your language for too long. If you stare at it, I mean really look at it for long enough, it suddenly seems like something from a different language. It has no meaning, no flashes of sounds and colors accompanying it. You start to see it for what it really is, begin to look at it through the eyes of someone who’d never seen English before.
It’s like that, when it starts getting deep, this feeling that I have sometime. Only, for me, it’s stronger. Suddenly, it feels like I don’t belong to….myself. Like a word that doesn’t belong to its language, or a bird that doesn’t belong to the sky. The entire concept of me being…..me doesn’t seem real.
It’s a strange feeling, to not feel like who you are, to not think of this person, with all their ideas, all that they’ve done and known as yourself. It gets even weirder when you start to think, if I’m not me, who am I?
Last summer I found out who that was. I’d always known I was different, somehow, but never who I was alike to, before then.. It was your typical summer, the kind that is so monumentally peaceful that you long for an adventure. What wasn’t typical was that I got one.
The summer of Nesupin.
2 AnswersBooks & Authors1 decade agoHow can I make my song better?
I want to sing it for the talent show, but I can't sing......
Somedays, I wonder if I should get out of bed
Cuz anyways
Today will just follow the path that yesterday led
And sometimes, the dreams I have when I’m asleep
Are too impossible to keep
In the real world
Cuz life’s like a
Stormcloud that passes in mid-July
It’s there for a second, then it crawls on by
Destroying all promise of refreshing rain
And I know lightning never strikes the same place again
So I, stretch out and try to clear my head
Look, sunrise
It’s beautiful, that’s all they said
Mostly, they only spare a passing glance
They don’t see the blush
Or watch the sparkles dance
Cuz life’s like a
Meteor, streaking across the sky
You blink and it’s like it never came by
Everybody’s asleep, so no one sees
It’s like a star falling in a forest of trees
They say, get your head out of the mist
But they
Never touched a star or kissed
The moon
Aim high, that’s the moral that we follow
But I, see no point in tomorrow
Coming down from where I am like they say
And trying to get up another way
Cuz life’s like the
Sunlight on the forest floor
Even though the foliage blocks it
They only make it more
Beautiful
But nobody strays off the path
Or takes the time to simply laugh
At things that aren’t funny
At all
But I, try to notice the simple things
The way blush creeps up your cheeks
Like sunrise
And the
Sparkle in your eyes
The reflection looks better
Than the first time
Cuz life’s like a
Wave tossed and thrown on the beach
Only a part, but the ocean’s made up of each
Little wave that gives and takes with each passing tide
The water is clear but it has secrets to hide
And when I crawl back into my cocoon
I’ll have to get up soon
To remember
All that I’ve seen that day
It’s like they say
A picture’s worth a thousand words
And everything I’ve heard
Is a picture
Cuz life’s like the
Moment when you finally realize
What you’re searching for is in front of your eyes
A teardrop that pictures the world as a whole
So cup it in your hands and never let go
And never let go

1 AnswerPolls & Surveys1 decade agoSwitching from trumpet to french horn?
I wasn't very good at brass when we tried it in band, but since I wasn't good at woodwind or percussion either, I'm playing trumpet.
I like the trumpet, but my band director actually wanted me to play french horn. Now that I know more about the sound of the french horn, I like it a lot more and I want to play it.
Do you think I'd be able to switch and do french horn next year? I practice for about an hour a day on trumpet, and I'm willing to work hard over the summer.
In the meantime, what can I work on w/ trumpet that will also help with french horn, and do you think my band teacher will let me switch (if u were a band teacher, would u let me switch?)?
Also, he let a french horn player switch to bassoon, so I think there's hope for me.
1 AnswerPerforming Arts1 decade agoChoosing an instrument?
I am in Beginning Band and we're choosing our instruments.
I like flute, but I can't play it.
I can't play clarinet because my brother plays it and my mom doesn't want us competing.
I can't play percussion because I'm not good at it and don't like the banging.
I can't play oboe because it takes too much time and you have to get private lessons to really succeed.
I can play:
sax-I like this, but we already 3 sax players in our small group, while we need 2 when we only have 1 French Horn.
French horn-my teacher wants me to play this, but I don't like it so much.
Trumpet-I'm not as good at this.
Euphonium-I kind of like this one.
I'm considering brass because I thought I wouldn't be really good at it and I actually am. But I heard that normally french horn or euphonium does the background-I think I'd rather play the melody.
7 AnswersPerforming Arts1 decade agoHelp me spice up ugly clothes?
My dad wanted to save money, so I picked out some clothes on-line. Now that I've got them, though, they look really ugly. I could never wear them to school.
Here's what I have-boring pair of khakis, in both tan and pink. they aren't that bad, just boring. light blue turtleneck sweater-BORING and UNFASHIONABLE. really, really ugly pants-covered with giant light blue sun flowers. I also have the same pair in pink.
a butterfly skort that looks too childish for someone going into 7th grade. 2 pairs of plain jeans that aren't tight or skinny at all-just really, really wide. also a pair of yoga pants covered with tiny flowers.
HELP! They're so ugly!
I know I could just send them back, but does anyone have any ideas on how to save them? They're okay really-just way too childish and/or ugly to wear to school.
I'm willing to glue stuff on, cut them, etc.
But I need help!
