  • Calculate the amount of energy released each year by radioactive decay in Earth's crust...?

    A. Know that 1 gram of crustal rock releases 300 ergs of heat each year and there are 2.7 * 10^25 g of rock in the crust.

    (I just did 2.7 * 10^25 * 300 ergs to get 8.1 * 10^27...is that right?)

    B. The radioactive heat released each year from the crust is equal to the energy released by how many 1 Mton nuclear bombs? Use the answer in part a and know 1 Mton bomb releases 4 * 10^22 ergs of energy.

    For this don't you just divide 4 * 10^22 by whatever the answer to A is? It's been a long time since I've had to do math, let me know what you think!

  • Decoding Region Restriction DVD?

    One of my favorite movies was never released in the US so I watched it online. The DVD recently came out and I ordered one however it has a region 4 restriction on it and in order to watch it on my laptop or even dvd player I need to strip the restriction. I've tried software like AnyDVD which didn't work. Does anyone know of any type of place I can take the DVD to have the restriction stripped?

  • NPV Project Evaluation?

    I have a few problems like this to do and there isn't an example of it in the book and we didn't go over it in class. Any help you could give me would be great!

    Kolby’s Korndogs is looking at a new sausage system with an installed cost of $912,600. This cost will be depreciated straight-line to zero over the project’s 5-year life, at the end of which the sausage system can be scrapped for $140,400. The sausage system will save the firm $280,800 per year in pretax operating costs, and the system requires an initial investment in net working capital of $65,520. If the tax rate is 34 percent and the discount rate is 13 percent, the NPV of this project is $

  • Ground Water and Aquifer Depletion?

    Assume the pumping of an aquifer was at a rate of 830 million ft^3/day, the natural discharge from the aquifer was 10 million ft^3/day, and the recharge (including irrigation return flow) to the aquifer was 510 million ft^3/day.

    1. What was the rate at which the aquifer was depleted?

    2. Over a 20-year period, how much ground water did the aquifer lose?

    3. Assume the area of the aquifer is 174000 miles^2 and the porosity of the aquifer material is 0.15, how much did the ground water level decline (assuming uniform decline)?

  • Geology Pressure Homework?

    This is a three part question:

    -If rock volume was at depth 10 km inside the earth, what was the lithostatic pressure this rock experienced? Assume density of the rocks above that rock volume is 3000 km/m^3. (I got this answer to be 294000).

    -If this rock is now exposed at the ground surface, what is pressure it experiences?

    -What is pressure change this rock volume experiences?

  • Reminding an Audience They're Watching a Play?

    Why would you want to remind your audience that they're watching a play? This is a question dealing with Shakespeare's plays and his use of theater language to remind audiences that they're watching a play (specifically A Midsummer Night's Dream). And what kinds of themes in the play do you think this reinforces?

  • Macroeconomics GDP Question?

    So here's the question:

    Suppose there are two firms in an economy: A and B. A produces timber and sells it to B, which produces and sells tables. Neither firm had any inventory at the beginning of 2000. During that year, A produced enough timber for 50 tables. B bought 70% of that timber for $700 (each table takes $20 worth of timber) and promised to buy the other 30% in 2001. B produced 35 tables in 2000 and sold them for $30 each. What was the economy's GDP for 2000?

    Now here's what I was doing-

    GDP=Y= Consumption + Investment + Gov't Purchases + Net Export

    C= 35x30=1050

    I=700

    G=0

    NX=O

    Therefore Y=1050+700=1750?

    Please let me know if I'm on the right track and where I need to go and what to do!

    Thanks!

    Suppose the alternate value of pi we are concerned about it .0095 and the critical value of the sample proportion, p, is .0097. Which of the following statements describes power?

    A) P(p > .0097 I pi = .0098)

    B) P(p < .0097 I pi = .0095)

    C) P(p > .0097 I pi = .0095)

    D) P(p < .0097 I pi = .0098)

  • Becoming a Real Estate Agent?

    So I'm a freshman in college and was thinking about gettin involved in Real Estate. Right now I'm majoring in Marketing and was going to do a 'certificate' program at my school for Real Estate however I'm sure there's more to it than that for getting into the business. I was just wondering if anyone knows how to start- if there's a test to take to become a certified agent, if I should just get an internship at an agency and hope they try to work me up the ladder or what? Also about how much agents start out at, what are some good firms to be with, and what kinds of things should I do in order to become successful. Any info at all would be really helpful!

  • Exploring Microeconomics textbook?

    I have to get a textbook called "Exploring Microeconomics" with sg, wsj card, and student handbook by Sexton and was wondering if the book comes with the sg or wsj card. I think you have to buy the hand book seperately but I'm hoping to order the book online rather than buying it from the book store (it's fifty dollars cheaper) but don't want to have to go back and search for the sg or wsj card (i don't even know what the wsj card is). any help on if anyone knows what comes with the book and what I have to buy seperately would be great!
