  • Is Science A belief in the same way that a belief in god is?

I used to be a scientist (Chemist) and I came to the conclusion that science is a belief which verges on the esoteric at times. What is defined as an absolute certainty changes over time as new facts are discovered.

I did a little philosophy on the side and to quote Marx (probably badly) facts are theory laden and theory is derived from world view.

As world view changes so do the facts.

  • What would happen if i didn't sign on for the first time when claim has gone to an assessor?

I need to go to France trouble is I am supposed to be there on my first sign on day. I have spoken to the job centre and they say I must submit a new claim. depsipite me having just submiotted one ( ie stop signing on and then re sign on when I get back. )

My claim has gone to an assesor would stopping signing on and then resigning on make it less likely to get benefits. Truth of the matter is I want to get a job so hopefully wont be on the dole for too long

  • What can I do with my damp floor?

We are renovating an old property which was originally a barn and converted to a house circa 1850. There does not appear to be a damp proof course anywhere and there are no floor membranes. One of the rooms has a brick floor as far as I can tell, they’ve been painted over and there is damp coming up through the it. We removed the pvc lino and there were pools of water under, which have dried out leaving use with damp. We would like to put some form of flooring but are worried it may make the problem worse. The walls are straw and earth as far as I can tell, and there are no air bricks. What can we do to stop the damp and what flooring could we use?

  • Which Game development software should I buy?

I want to develop my own Role playing adventure game but can’t programme for toffee. I used to do dynamic html and “Basic” about 20 years ago. There seems to be quite a few of this click and go type programmes and wondered what the best might be. Current system I have is a laptop with 128 meg shared graphics, 1 gig ram, Pentium dual core, windows XP, on board sound. Id like my games to look “shiny” but not tax my system too much with either the development software or the games produced and also whilst I don’t really want to get into scripting yet I may do in the future. Any advice much appreciated

  • What SatNav Should I buy for UK and Europe?

I am fed up with being stuck in traffic on my way home at night, I have to leave Harlow (some would say this is a good thing) at around 17.00. I’m not great with maps at the best of times that’s why I give them to my wife, yes you herd correct my wife is a much better navigator. But she’s not with me on the drive home. What I am looking for is a SATNAV system which also does live updates of the traffic flow; I also need to know if they will do it on a town rather than motorway level. So any recommendations would be gratefully received. I would also like to be able to use it in Europe with no extra upgrades.

  • Should children be allowed to receive marks for text message language use in an English exam?

Listening to radio 4 this morning a exam body is awarding marks for the use of text language in and English Exam eg

2b or not 2b as opposed to To be or not to be, a quote from Shakespear. They would not recieve marks for spelling but they would for the answer. I think this will lead to the decline of the English Language and make Higher study harder for the children. What do you think?

  • Any good abdominal exercises that don’t put pressure on the lower back?

I have lower back problems and whilst I can exercise I can’t do anything that puts too much pressure on it. I can for example use a recliner cycle and walk on the tread mill and can do about 10 minutes a week on the cross trainer with no problems. But my belly is flabby is there anything that might help?

  • Do “noise canceling” headphones cut out background music?

I go to the Gym regularly but don’t like their choice in music that blares out of the speakers. If I were to buy some noise canceling headphones would it allow me to listen to my own music through a personal stereo without having to turn it up to stupid volumes?
