  • How do I get rid of house centipedes, preferrably without chemicals?

I have those evil* little north american house centipedes in my building. I have done some basic research, and learned that they are insectivores* that like damp conditions, and lots of nooks and crannies to hide in. The building in which I live is old, has plenty of hiding spaces, and has roof problems, so there is the dampness issue. It was built in several sections over time, so I will not be able to seal up all the cracks/crevices, and I doubt the roof will stop leaking anytime soon. I have a cat and would like to avoid chemical-based fixes, but if it's cat safe, I'll do whatever I have to!

*yeah, they eat pests around the house, but look one in the eye and tell me it's not evil!

thanks in advance! 10 points to best answer!

Links are appreciated, but I would like to avoid buying that e-book I found (or others!) on the subject, so free links/info is best...

have a great and centipede-free weekend!

  • Is one of Marx's most famous quotes misinterpreted?

"religion is the opiate of the masses"

For years I have heard/read that the meaning of this quote is that religion is an addiction for the common people. Recently I read an alternate interpretation that makes more sense to me: opiates, in the time that Marx lived, were the commonly prescribed painkiller, as asprin was not in widespread use. So, in this sense, 'religion is the thing that helps people dull the pain in their lives' not 'religion is an addiction that renders its user dull and mindless'

Any idea what he actully meant? Sure, I could try to track it down myself, but am asking here because

A)I'm currently only online @ work; no time for research

    B)I'm lazy!

    thanks!

  • Classic cars from companies that went bust years ago?

    Hello,

I'm trying to find some images of classic cars for a project for a client. To avoid trademark infringement/legal issues, I thought I would find images of cars that were made by manufacturers that are no longer around. The only ones that I could think of are Studebaker and Edsel. Any suggestions for classic car types/models are appreciated, and links to image collections that would apply are more than welcome!

    thanks!

  • Need to keep cat away from wires; how?

The cat likes to chew on wires; obviously this is a habit with potentially disastrous results. I had the idea to spray something on all my wires which would keep the cat away. What can I use? Keep in mind that it must meet the following criteria...

    1 non-toxic: seems like a no-brainer

2 can't smell too strongly, just enough to keep the cat away

3 please suggest feasible things; I'm sure coyote urine would do the trick, but that's out

4 must not damage/fade the carpet or whatever

5 would rather it be long-lasting; there are a lot of wires between PC, stereo, tv, games, power cords/speaker wire etc and I don't want to be spraying all of that every 2 weeks

    Thanks!

  • Are there any other figments?

I have only heard/read of '(a) figment(s) of the imagination'; are figments used for anything else? In the English language, there are single words with multiple meanings, is this a word with only one use?

  • Have you read Pressfield's 'Gates of Fire'?

I did and it ruined the movie 300 for me. I may not have been too keen on it anyway; not too into those movies which are rediculously overstylized re-tellings of actual events.

So were any of you who have read this book & liked it able to enjoy 300? I heard the movie rights to 'Gates...' were purchased years ago, but heard nothing since; know anything about that?

  • What's the funniest website you've ever seen?

must be 'work-appropriate'; pics are better than stuff with vids. I am already aware of engrish.com, Joe Cartoon, Icanhascheezburger, & Perry Bible Fellowship; skip those.

    thanks!

(dunno if I'll pick or put it ot a vote)

  • Please help; can you say a prayer?

    Hi,

My mom's in the hospital with cancer-related liver issues. The cancer is all over her body, but the chemo's been doing it's job. Now, tho, there are liver issues and she's probably too old and too sick to be a transplant candidate.

Like that's not enough, my best friend in the world of the last 20 yrs, who I consider a brother, is in the hospital following some sort of bi-polar related mental breakdown. His family won't give me details in order to respect his privacy (I'm ok with that) but I'm 2+ hours away and don't know what is going on or how serious it is!

I should be honest and mention that I'm not a Christian, but I would appreciate any and all good thoughts, prayers & whatever you want to send their way, in whatever religion, to whatever diety or supreme being in which you believe.

thank you! thank you! thank you! thank you!

  • Have info on cancer-related liver scarring?

My mom has cancer; not of the liver, but apparently it has lead to some scarring of the liver. I am trying to find out more about this condition, but am only online at work and can't take time for a thorough search. I would appreciate any info/links.

    Thank you!

  • Help me help Veterans?

I'm looking for an organization that re-trains injured Veterans in graphic art/graphic design on the computer. If you come home from Iraq and are going to spend the rest of your life in a wheelchair you can still do graphic art on the computer, if someone can get you started. In fact, freelancing from home would be easier due to a lack of commuting hassles. I'd like to volunteer, or even work full time, with such an organization. I know that Walter Reed has a program that offers training in IT stuff, but I'm in the more creative end of computer doings. I'm aware of the GI Bill & other assistance with education for service personnel, but what about getting to and from classes if you're in a wheelchair? Possible, certainly, but wouldn't it be easier if someone could come to you for tutoring? Having been a peer tutor in high school, a TA in college a couple times, and having done some software tutoring since then, I know that it can be easier and faster learning things in a one-on-one teaching situation. I've been doing graphic art on the computer for about 20 years, and professionally for the last 11 years. I would love to have the opportunity to work with Vets in training them in the use of graphics software, and principles of graphic design & layout.

    Any help is appreciated; thanks!
