Best technology for middle school student?
My son is 11 and entering the 6th grade. He's an avid reader and I was thinking of getting him an ereader, but I was wondering if a tablet might be better? His middle school offers an online copy of their textbooks, so I could see him using a tablet, but e-ink would be better for battery life. I'm also concerned about parental controls - I don't want him playing games when he's supposed to be studying or stumbling onto inappropriate sites. Cost is also a factor and I'd rather not pay over $200 for something he might break. He had a kindle 2 and it lasted a year and a half before he accidentally stepped on it and cracked the screen.
1 AnswerPrimary & Secondary Education9 years agoPhysics help please?
My physics prof. is kind of a d-bag in that he talks AT us instead of TO us and we're left to fend for ourselves on homework. Can anybody help me with this problem and (especially) explain what the equations mean?
A 6.0 m diameter merry-go-round is rotating freely with an angular velocity of 0.90 rad/s. Its total moment of inertia is 2050 kg·M2. Four people standing on the ground, each of 70 kg mass, suddenly step onto the edge of the merry-go-round.
(a) What is the angular velocity of the merry-go-round now?
(b) Assume that the people were on it initially (when the angular velocity is 0.90 rad/s) and then jumped off in a radial direction (relative to the merry-go-round). What would be the angular velocity of the merry-go-round?
1 AnswerPhysics9 years agoSinger Futura 250 won't calibrate?
I've set my machine to embroider at the top of the small hoop, but it's still stitching in the middle. I've got it set on the small hoop size with the small hoop on the machine, and the test piece turned out great. I've restarted the machine and the program and it still won't work.
I'd change the position of the hoop, but I'm stitching a name onto a child's vest and it was difficult to hoop in the first place.
1 AnswerHobbies & Crafts1 decade agoADHD biased kindergarten teacher?
My son is undergoing ADHD evaluations - we're pretty sure he has it. He's not a violent child at all, he just has problems holding still and being quiet - he also loves to be the center of attention. My boy visits with his psychologist 2-4 times per month and we’re implementing the discipline techniques the doctor has suggested.
I keep the teacher updated on our progress, but every chance she gets, she's nagging at me about how poor his behavior is at school, to the point where he doesn't even sound like my child. She has a degree in psychology and has been pushing an ADHD evaluation since the beginning of the school year - she can't understand why my son's psychologist was waiting until he turned 6 to test him. She’s gone so far as to begin an in-school evaluation process, even though she knew his ADHD test date was near. When she called to tell me this, my simple reply was basically, “bring it.” This in-school evaluation was “unavailable” to my older son, who was having the same problems two years ago and nearly failed the first grade. We were clueless at the time how to help my older boy, but after receiving outside psychological help, he is successfully managing his ADHD, on the honor roll, and in the gifted classes.
I’m in favor of finding effective results to help my younger son function in a classroom. He’s brilliant and I’m not just saying it because I’m his mom. I also know, from personal experience, that handling a room full of children can be extremely difficult. However, labeling my boy as a problem child, talking down to him, and falsifying his academic results aren’t the methods that are going to turn him into a successful individual.
How do I deal with this lady???
1 AnswerPrimary & Secondary Education1 decade agoPink plaque detector tabs?
Remember when they'd teach dental hygiene in elementary school and they'd give you these pink tabs that would stain the plaque on your teeth bright pink? I was thinking that those would help my kids brush better. We've tried the Inspector Hector Detector things, but they don't work very well at staining plaque.
2 AnswersDental1 decade agoIs there a way to turn bar soaps into candles?
I bought some great smelling bar soap, but it looks like I'm a bit allergic to it - my skin breaks out really bad after I use it. I've also got a lot of questionable bars given to me over past holidays that smell nice, but I don't want to chance having a reaction.
All of these soaps smell great. Is there a way to re-mill them and turn them into candles?

We recently switched to a 3 ply toilet paper and now, one by one, the toilets in the house aren't flushing well or at all. Has anybody else had this problem?
4 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoFor the experts: rat has a urethra cyst?
Sally is about 2 1/2 year old female Berkshire, top-eared rat and she's going downhill fast. She had a stroke about 6 months ago that left her sense of balance way off. Just after she recovered from that, we noticed that she was developing a mammary tumor under her left forepaw.
A week or so ago I noticed a hole in her tummy, just above her urethra, that looked like a draining cyst. From my prior experience with rats, the cysts healed on their own. However, this hole has gotten a little bigger, a little shallower, and has started to smell. Additionally, I'm not sure if she's urinating through her urethra anymore. The edge of the hole is right up against it and it doesn't look like it can open very well. I'm changing her cage now twice a week and putting peroxide on the wound to see if it'll help.
I'm hesitant to take her back to the vet, as they consistently misdiagnose my rats.
I think she's in pain and I'm probably going to have my sweet girl euthanized, but I'd really like to know wtf this is... I haven't found anything at ratguide.com yet. ='(
1 AnswerRodents1 decade agoWhat's wrong when a fever won't respond to acetaminophen?
I've been getting sick like this since just before Christmas, but the scariest part is the fever.
The symptoms come on like a sinus/upper respiratory infection, but the fever goes out of control - up to 105.5 - and about 75% of the time doesn't respond to Nyquil, Tylenol, or anything else I've tried. This lasts for about 2 weeks, I'll be ok for about a week, and then get sick with the same thing all over again.
The last time, I went to a little clinic and was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. They gave me amoxicillin, which I took and finished, but here I am, sick again. The other night I entirely lost my sense of ballance and barely made it back to bed... I couldn't tell which way was up. =(
3 AnswersInfectious Diseases1 decade agoHamsters, mice, rats eating bedding and dying?
I'm wondering if anybody else has come across this or knows why it happens, as it's a first for me. I've kept domestic rats for years.
A couple of years ago I rescued and hand raised an orphaned baby cotton rat. She became semi-domesticated and lived a VERY long life (they only survive about 9 months or so in the wild), but I discovered that she had passed away yesterday. At first I thought she'd died due to old age, but on closer examination, she had cloth fibers from her bedding sticking out of her mouth. I know use of cloth isn't recommended and I don't keep cloth in the other cages, but having a sock to crawl into was a comfort thing for her, ever since she was a baby. She had plenty of food and water... why would she eat her bedding?
5 AnswersRodents1 decade agoMy 4yr old hums almost all the time. Is there something wrong??
He's done this as long as I can remember. He's not humming any tune, it's just this droning, one-note "mmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmmm" when he's eating, when he's playing... all the time. We haven't found anything developmentally wrong with him and he speaks very well for his age. I've tried to alert him to when he's doing it, and he stops briefly, but then he starts up again. I don't even think he knows he's doing it sometimes.
7 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoDishwasher detergent eating pots and pans?
My boyfriend received a set of $$$ stainless steel pots and pans several years ago for his birthday (before I was with him). We've been living together for about 3 years now, and suddenly he's freaking out and saying I can't put the pots and pans in the diswasher because the detergent is eating away at them.
The pots and pans have a dark coating on the outside that, in my opinion, is being scraped away by the metal gas oven burners and chipped and scratched off when the pots and pans bump into each other. Normal wear and tear. Where the coating has worn off on the outside, the metal is rough, which was probably to help the coating stick. The insides have typical light scratches in them from mixing, stirring, etc.
My boyfriend says to leave the pots in the sink and he'll hand wash them (which I know won't happen) or I can't use them (I'm the one that cooks!). We've got kids. They deserve more than heat and eat. >=/
We use the Cascade 2-in-1 Action Pacs if that's any help.
7 AnswersCleaning & Laundry1 decade agoHelping with gifted son's emotional growth?
My 1st grader made it into the accelerated learning program, but he's still very emotionally immature. He's still going through ADD screening, but I don't really think that's what's wrong. He's great at reading and math but he's severely lacking in social and emotional skills. I spend a lot of time with him after school and I'm always telling him how proud I am. At home he's happy and laid back - he reads (middle school level books), does chores, plays with his little brother, etc. From what his teacher says about how he behaves at school, he doesn't even sound like my kid! She said he runs around the class room, randomly breaks into tears saying nobody loves him, and even said that he'd break his own fingers so he wouldn't have to go to school anymore! He threw a pencil at her head today!
Additionally, my son asked if he could join chess club or cub scouts, but I'm torn. I want him to be involved in activities outside of school and home, but I don't want to reward his bad behavior.
4 AnswersGrade-Schooler1 decade ago4yr old vs. jigsaw puzzle boxes?
My younger boy just turned 4 and he's a jigsaw puzzle whiz. He loves to put 50-100 piece puzzles together by himself, but he always ends up smashing the cardboard boxes that they come in. I've tried reinforcing the corners, but they still get mutilated. Any ideas on how to keep the boxes in once piece? or alternative containers to keep the pieces in?
This morning I decided to cut out the main picture on the box and tape it to a ziplock baggie and put the pieces inside... we'll see how this works.
5 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoBest handheld kids' learning/game system?
My boys are 6 1/2 and the other will be 4 two days after christmas. A couple of years ago I bought them the handheld V-Smile, which didn't fare too well (screen would freeze, cartridge problems, would randomly shut off even with new batteries or connected to the AC adaptor). We still have all of the assesories, but I was wondering if there's a more reliable, better hand held learning/game system out there. Is there anything built like the Fisher Price digital camera, where it can withstand kid use?
3 AnswersOther - Games & Gear1 decade ago93 Sable running rough, bad gas smell?
Hello and I'd like to start by thanking anybody who may have some good info on what's wrong with my car. I'm a single mother so my transportation is critical at this point.
I have a 1993 Sable that's running rough, sucking down a lot of gas, and has a gassy smell when running. When accelerating, the car seems to lose power every second or so.
What could be wrong? About how much will it cost to fix? Are there any good shops in the north Atlanta area that would do this for a reasonable price?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoCare for a possible umbilical hernia or boil while we're waiting for results?
About a week ago my partner noticed a lump in his belly button. He said it didn't hurt and that he could pop it back into place. A few days ago it started becoming very painful. He went to the doctor and we're awaiting the results of his ultrasound. They said it could be an umbilical hernia OR a boil.
While we're waiting for the results, what can we do to ease his pain? I know boils are supposed to have warm compresses to help them come to a head, but would this be dangerous if it turned out to be a hernia?
Thank you, everybody, in advance, for your help.

I was wondering if anybody here knew how to unlock a protected pdf file I just downloaded from score-on-line.com. I don't understand why they'd do this... I paid for sheet music, not a file I can't open. I've checked the emails I've received (2). One is English, but doesn't say anything about a code, and the other is French, which I'm pretty rusty at. =/

I'm getting the Yahoo Error 999 when posting, but the funny thing is... that when I keep my signature short (I usually include some helpful links) that it will post, but when I include the whole thing I get the error. My security is fine, I have high-speed internet. Is Yahoo retarded? Are there any humans working there or is it all run by auto-response email bots without real answers?
