  • Allowable distance of water to basement floor?

I have a basement with 2 sump pits. They are of the perforated type. I experience quite a bit of run frequency with them. Each pit is about 2.5 feet deep. I want to raise the base level of the pumps to allow the water to rise higher in the pit. My question is what distance is allowable as to prevent water from entering the basment either through hydrostatic or head pressure? What should the distance be beetween the base of the basement slab and the max height of water. I cannot find an answer anywhere. Also....am i correct in assuming the water will only rise to a certain height in a perforated sump pit and follow the rules of head pressure...or can the water rise higher than the surrounding. My present main source of water is ground water entering from around the crock....not the weep tile. Thanks for input. People with experience in this matter is really encouraged Thank you

  • Heated Raised Floor?

I will be in the process of installing an electric radiant floor on a raised/platform floor. In the past I have had problems with the pipes under the floor freezing during the winter. Do you think the radiant floor pad will induce enough heat to prevent future freeze ups? The floor is raised by 2x8'S on end with 3/4 inch plywood subfloor. I am planning on tiling on top of this. There is currently heat tape on the pipes....but to insulate area properly would mean to rip ou the subfloor and toilet to get at the pipes. Any suggestions or agreements? I am also planning on venting the one side of the platform to allow the cold air to escape and not accumulate. This will be covered with an ordinary grate. Thanks

  • Tiles and Electrical Heated floor mats on Concrete floor.?

I am in the process of finishing the basement. While I was considering laminate flooring..I am also thinking about slate/tile. I am looking into Radaint floor heating (electrical)I have quite a large area to cover. My question is what is the best way to install radiant floor heating. Is it best to lay it on concrete directly and tile over. Put down a substrate. (I've read backerboard attached to floor etc. I think that creating a subfloor would defeat porpose of radiant heating because now it is insulated. Also how efficient is radiant floor heating? IS it similar to baseboard heating costs? Has anyone installed it before in a basement. I live in Canada and any comments or links would be welcome. Tahnks

  • Canexel Siding On Dormers?

I am installing CAnexel Siding. It is a fibrebased material with a weather proof exterior. The back of it is fibrous and not protected. Here is my problem. I am siding my dormers and the siding will have to be cut to conformer to the slope of my roof. First..would I have to seal the cut ends of the siding? And if so..with what? How high should the siding be above the surface of the sloping roof (meatl roof) Should I caulk between the roof and the bottom of the siding to prevent ice daming in the winter or will that trap moisture that gets behind siding. I was also thiong about caulikng between roof and bottom edge of sidng..but leaving small gap at the lowest point of the siding behind the outside corner trim to allow melting water to escape. Has anyone worked with this stuff?

  • Canexel Siding?

I am planning to side with Canexel over my origanal cedar siding. We moved into the home 2 years ago and the sidng was not taken care of and suffered accordingly. It is weathjer beaten. I want to Tyvek and strap with true one inch pine on top. The cedar siding runs perpendicular and is lap jointed. Where some of the joints have curled up I noticed there is no sheathing underneath. I want to strap into the studs for assured strength and I am wondering if they make stud finders that will locate studs through the sidng.I can locate some from inside and transfer outside but I don't have A LOT OF FAITH on the studs being on the correct centers. Do they make a stud finder that will will work from oustside?

  • Brick-mold and Siding?

I just ordered new windows and I forsee a problem. My siding (Canexel) is 3/4 " thick when installed. All J-mold and corner pieces have a one inch tolerance to accept this thickness. I am afraid my Brickmold is not thick enough to allow the siding to fit snug inside the vinyl groove. Do these grooves come in different widths? My only other option would be to use j-mold next to the vinyl window and caulk inbetween the j-mold and vinyl window. This is not the look I was after. Any window experts out there?

  • Money invested in house VS Resale?

I have been living in my place for 2 years. It is a log home and during this time frame I have spent $30,000. This includes a metal roof, 2 Propane firelaces, limestone boulders. I am redoing the logs this year and replacing 5 windows and adding new siding to the top half of my house. This will equall another $5000. I am doing all the work myself so labor is not an issue. There will be some savings in enrgy costs..but not enough to offset the cash I have put in already. My question is how much is too much to pour into a house? My family is very happy here and I hope the amount of money will decrease as I fix up the place. $30-40,000 on a new car is not unheard of so why do we get all upset over dumping money into a house. After 5 years a car is worth a third of what you spent. How much would a new roof. landscaping, siding and windows add to my place realistically? I am not counting my time..just materials? Is anyone else in this quandry?
