My adult son is getting paid for something via internet (legit). I assume they send a 1099 at end of year. How does he pay Social Security/Medicare taxes in the meantime?

I have very old basic cell phone that doesn't hold charge too long, so time to replace. My contract with verizon is up (pay month to month) and don't want to get locked in to another contract, just want to replace with an inexpensive but decent basic cellphone. My son recently got a job (managing a small restaurant) and the owner said he is going to be treated as a 1099 employee. I assume that means he's some sort of independent contractor, and is responsible for his own withholding of income taxes and self-employed social security and medicare, but am not familiar with the details. What taxes is he responsible for and how does he and/or boss remit?

I have windows ME and recently MS announced they are no longer supporting the product. When I had problems in the past, as a last resort I would use system restore and there were always a multitude of recent restore points. Now I notice that I have no restore points, nor can I create them. Any ideas as to what is going on? I do have decent virus scan, zonealarm, antispy so hopefully it not something along those lines.
