  • New to disk imaging/cloning - need advices?

    Windows 10 64-bit.

I've done some research myself and seem like people prefer disk imaging. So I want to ask if anyone can guide me into the right step of exploring backing up data - and not just copy and paste like I have been doing since middle school. Few topics I want to discuss:

    - Is it true disk imaging require you to save the disk image of a source drive X into another drive Y, then restore it to a drive Z to have the exact same state of my system? Does drive Z has to be a fresh drive? Does it has to conform to any other requirement in order for the image to successfully copy to it (like hardware specifications)?

    - Any good free options for software to handle disk imaging or cloning? I would like to keep my available options to the cheapest (free) if I could. On the same topic, is Macrium Reflect Free good enough for the job?

    - How long would the process usually take? How large will the image file be? Same size as whatever GBs my source hard drive is holding?

    - Any risk to the process? Any complications? I would imagine restoring the image can be quite troublesome. Even installing Windows 10 gave me some hiccups back when it was out.

    - I am a complete novice in building PC and touching any hardware parts inside a PC. Is it easy and risk-free to replace a hardrive in a PC bought from a store? I want to self-learn this so any good guide/video will be appreciated.

    Thank you for any inputs.

  • Should I choose Computer Engineering or Computer Science?

College time is around the corner, so I want to make sure I pick the one I feel good with. First of all is some stuff about me: I love to diagnose and do tech support stuff. If it comes to tweaking the Control Panel or finding out the procedure to do something on a PC, I'm all in for it. I also like to use many different software and test for the best one; antivirus for example. I consider myself the tech support for people around me; and if course on Yahoo Answer too. I just love computers and tech gadgets.

Now I heard that most companies always look for IT people to add to their department, and that IT also work with helping around in the company when the occasion arise. So my question again is: Computer Engineering or Computer Science? As I research I still can't differentiate between the two, and I don't know what major the kind of computer support or IT falls into.

*Also a side question: Between CE and CS which one is more in demand right now? Which one is more practical?

    Thanks!

  • Desktop computer with the beeping noises when starting up (with video of beeps)?

I have a 32-bit Dell Precision originally with Windows 7 but now upgraded to Windows 10. This problem recently happened to it: the PC makes the beeping sounds when I start it up. Let me explain the details.

So this isn't the first time it happened, in fact it did the exact same things back when it is still a Windows 7 machine, making the same pattern of beeps. Back then I just keep turning it on and off and fortunately it did run again

Recently I changed PC, so I unplugged all the external stuff on this Dell computer (I don't have external drive or anything, just simple mouse, keyboards, etc.). When I plugged them back in to the Dell because I was giving it to someone else, the beeping happened. I read somewhere that they are also partly caused by hardware changes, much like BSOD, and I'm pretty sure each mouse or keyboard is "installed" to certain USB slots. When I plugged the external stuff back in like I mentioned earlier, I don't remember the exact USB slots since the Dell PC I had has many, so I think this is the main reason it looks like I have a "hardware change"

I can't interpret the beeps and I don't have any hardwares skills to modify the inside parts (except RAMs but that's not helpful right now), but I have the video below for interpretation. I want to ask if there are any better way to get my computer back to normal booting (since back then it took me hours to turn off and on constantly, not good for a computer...)

Attached is a video I recorded of the beeps.

  • Phone's storage space decrease over time?

I think this question can be applied to any smartphone, but if I am to be specific, my phone is a Lumia 710 running Windows Phone 7.5.

With all the stuff I have, the phone only have 1GB free. But recently, somehow the storage space (not memory) decreased and now I only have about 200MB left, which will decrease the phone's performance. Sometimes the phone gained back the lost space, but in the meanwhile it will cause problems (can't download new contents, sometimes laggy interface, etc.)

So I was wondering what caused this? I heard it was because of apps using cache data, but is that true? And importantly, how to recover the lost storage space?

Also, does watching online videos (especially movie-length one) cause this as well?

    Thanks!

  • Where to use my animated GIF images?

So I made a few GIF images for uploading as my profile picture of my accounts (I have a lot of different account on the internet, like from Facebook, Twitter, Email, etc.) But I can't find a website that let me upload them. Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo Profile will make my GIF image like a JPEG, even though I've tried a 10X10 (less than 2 KB) image and a 100X100 (about 3.2 MB) image. So where I can upload these GIF images as my profile picture so they will show the animation (except those picture hosting site)? Thank you.

  • Ways to make phone's battery last longer?

So just like a laptop or a tablet, phone's battery may decrease its capacity throughout time. So does anyone have some ways that can make phone's battery (or smartphone's) extend its life. If you want, you can provide a source to these questions so I can read them also. Thank you.

  • Best way to keep a laptop battery last longer?

So I know factors like screen brightness, how many programs are open, watching videos or playing games can affect the battery of a laptop. So what is the best way out there that can make a battery last longer? Also, since I don't use my battery much, what I need to know when storing a battery without using it for a long period of time? I hear people said you need to use it at least once a month. And lastly, when should I charge my battery? When it's completely out? 10% full?

If you want, you can provide a source of these information so I can read about them. Thank you.

  • Spam emails in my Yahoo account?

I have several different emails, all from different email providers (ex: Yahoo, Gmail, Outlook, etc.). So recently, I left my Yahoo email to log in automatically on my phone's browser by checking the "remember me" option. So I accidently went to a site that take my email (I'm still not sure about this happen). Then it send ads and spams in my Yahoo account. Although all the email from it were moved to the Spam folder, I want to keep my Yahoo account clean. So is there any ways to block these emails so it will never appear in my Yahoo account, beside deleting it or deleting my account and making a new one?

  • Windows asked for product key?

By going to My Computer > Properties, I can see that my Dell Windows 7 computer is already activated. But I accidently click on Activate Windows through the search box, and now it say "Your activation period has expired. You must activate Windows". Now everytime I go on this computer, the message pop up.

This computer I buy from another person (meaning it's used). It was upgrade from Windows XP to 7, so I only have the product key for Windows XP (I got it from the Windows tag on the computer). Anyone know what to do with this, the only thing that I click to make this problem is Activate Windows.
