  • why can't functions have two y values?

Why aren't you allowed to have a function of, say:

    f(x)=+/- x

    ?

And can you answer without just saying "because it means it's not a function anymore" or "Because it has 2 y values" because that is self-reference, not good basis for argument.

  • Does chance really exist?

Before you write me off, hear me out.

Say there is a coin. You flip the coin. People say that there is a 50% chance it will land heads. However, if you were somehow able to meticulously measure and calculate the different variables like the weight of the coin, wind speed, flipping velocity etc., you would be able to work out the outcome of the toss-up, there would be no "chance" involved.

Alternatively, if you had a computer "flip" a coin, you could see its programming and work out whether the next flip will be heads or tails.

This Meticulous Calculation can apply to and "chance" event from economics to who will land on Park Place in Monopoly.

So my question is, what actually is chance and does it exist?

  • Why is it safe to stare at stars, but not at the sun?

The sun is a star, just like the rest of the ones in our galaxy, but why is it we can stare at potentially thousands, but not at our one sun, if they're the same thing?

  • Feeling tired from snot?

Sometimes, my nose seems to produce so much mucus that it makes me tired and not want to do anything. It usually persists from mid-morning till night-time. I'm not sure whether I have a small allergy to something or if it's some sort of medical condition

This happens really often to me, something like 3-4 times each week. Does anyone know what's going on?

  • Why doesn't Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 work anymore?

Just today, I was going to use Microsoft Word 2007 by found out that I couldn't use it, Excel or Powerpoint. I could open Word documents but I couldn't edit them at all.

Has my copy expired? I'm using a bought copy of the programs, not a free trial.

  • How do you make a whistle louder?

How do you make one of those blow-whistles louder?

I mean those small plastic or metal whistles

Do you need to blow more? Do you need a bigger whistle? Does the material matter?

Not "you need a gym-like room" or "you need a better whistle"

Can you change only the whistle or your mouth to increase the sound of the whistle?

  • Why won't steam load?

My computer (Windows XP) crashed recently. Now, it made itself work again, but every time I try to go on steam, it doesn't load at all. It only flashes the steam icon on my dashboard then pretends I never clicked it.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it?
