  • How do you construct a 1-hour ceiling/floor assembly?

I have found assemblies to use, but I can't figure out how to install doors and windows in the wall.

To be specific... I am designing a duplex with one unit upstairs, and the other unit down. So instead of a fire wall (easy to do) I have to do a floor/ceiling assembly. Since the sheetrock on the underside of the assembly has to be continuous, the walls holding up the floor also have to have a 1-hour fire rating.

The problem is... I need to install doors and windows in the exterior walls.

How can I do that, while maintaining the fire rating? The owners don't want windows and doors with metal wiring in the glass.

I see apartments all the time with regular doors and windows, so I know THOSE structures meet fire code. How are they accomplishing this?

    Thanks!

  • What law did I break? How much will the ticket be? Drove thru a school parking lot at night.?

Had an odd thing happen tonight. I live near a school with a long drive around it. Technically the drive is part of the school. The road says "Private Drive" although each morning the parents use the road to bring their kids to school, so it isn't really private. We are in a county in Texas (outside the city limits).

The public road on the other side of the school does not connect to the road by our house. The only way to get from that road to our road is another road about 3 miles away.

So tonight we were driving home on the road on the other side of the school, and we drove thru the 'private drive' to get to our street. A sheriff was there and pulled us over an gave me a ticket. The violation he wrote was "Cut through private drive to make a turn". No idea what the fine will be... it is not listed as one of the 'normal' fine items.

Now, I can understand how this would have been a problem if the two roads connected, and I had the option to turn from one to the other. But they don't connect anywhere. The only way to get from one to the other is thru the school drive. And again... parents do this every morning and afternoon (it is about 2 blocks from our house). If I was cutting a corner (like thru a gas station) to avoid a light, I would understand that. But this is not the case.

So, does anyone know what law specifically I broke? Any clue what the fine will be? Will I be able to take defensive driving?

    Thanks!

  • Does HBO have old shows available to watch, as well as current shows?

I am thinking about getting HBO, but several of the shows (Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, etc) are on their 3rd or 4th seasons. Is there a way to catch up on the old shows? I know you can watch them on Amazon.com for a fee, but I'd rather not pay the monthly fee for HBO, plus pay another $30 or $40 per show to catch up.

  • How many TOTAL gold medals will be handed out in London this Olympics?

What I mean is, considering the fact that all teammates receive a medal, there must be over 1000 gold medals total, right? Even though the tally on the medal count will only show 1 gold medal, the basketball team will get around 12 or 14 gold medals. The swim relay teams will get 4 gold medals. The gold-medal soccer team will get about 15 medals.

So if you add them all up, how many actual medals will be handed out?

Is there any website that tracks this?

I know, I know... kind of an off question.

    Thanks!

  • How best to spend three days in Wahsington DC?

My family will be spending three full days in Washington DC. We will not be rushed (thank goodness) so we don't need any of those 'hit all the landmarks in 8 hours' tours. We'd like to take our time and really absorb all there is to see.

So I need some advice on some tours we could take ourselves, using our own travel methods (walking, taxi, shuttles, etc) over a three day span. We want to see everything that should be seen, without spending a fortune (we are not wealthy). But I don't want to backtrack too much, or waste time travelling inefficiently.

Are there any guides that would break up DC into 'zones' where we could spend entire days seeing things in the same area? Can anyone give me a list of the 'must see' things that can be seen in a day (or three days)? My kids are 16, 14, and 12.

We know we want to see the following:

    -The Smithsonian

    -Arlington National Cemetery

    -Library of Congress

    -The Capitol building

    -Lincoln and Washington memorials

    -Smithsonian

    -Holocaust museum

    -National Air and Space museum

    -Spy museum

etc, etc... there seems to be SO much to see, I don't know what to skip and what to focus on.

    Any guidance/advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  • How much below MSRP should I offer for a new RAV4?

I am about to make an offer (on the internet, no less) on a new, loaded Toyota RAV4. The MSRP is right at $31,000. Can I offer $27,000?

One other thing... I am in Texas, and the exact car I want is in Louisiana. Any problem with that? Will that make negotiating more difficult?

    Thank you!

  • I am a Residential Home Designer... is there a LEED certificate that applies to this?

I have been designing homes for 14 years, and am a CPBD (certified professional building designer). I have had several customers ask if I am LEED certified. From what I have seen, it seems like the LEED certifications are for builders and architects working on large-scale projects. Is there a LEED certification that would be beneficial to someone who only designs homes?

  • Why don't Cowboys use Stephen McGee?

I mean, Kitna is totally useless... why not give McGee a shot? Kitna looks like Betty White out there.

  • Did Cowboys use their challenge in first half?

I missed the first 20 minutes of the Cowboys game... did they lose their challenge during that time, since they did not challenge the obvious 'knee down' on the kick-off, just before the half?

  • How can I make a copy of a single email message?

I use Outlook, and would like to duplicate emails on occasion. I file emails into folders based on projects, and some clients send one email with info for two projects, so I need to save a copy of each email in their respective folders.

So I need to know how to make a copy of an email. I know I can email it back to myself, but I'd prefer to have cleaner way to do that.

    Thanks!

  • My keyboard keeps turning off. Why?

I bought a dock for my Dell XPS a couple weeks ago. Everything works fine, except for one thing... my USB keyboard quits working after a while. It just freezes up. I have to unplug it, and plug it back in to the dock before it starts working again.

It seems to occur when I step away from the computer for a while... if I take a 15-minute break or something.

FY... my power settings are set to leave everything 'ON'... in other words, the computer does not go into hibernation or anything.

    Any ideas?

  • My Outlook won't turn off!?

When I turn off Outlook by hitting the red X in the upper corner, Outlook closes, but it stays in the lower corner of my screen... where the 'running' programs are shown. In other words, it stays running in the background. Even if I right-click on the little icon down there, it does not allow me to close it.

The only way I can shut it down completely is via task manager (End Process). But if I do that, Outlook has to perform a 'recovery' when it starts again.

I have been using Outlook for about 12 years... this has never been a problem before. What have I done? Arghhh!

  • Excel formula help needed... copying multiple cells?

I can't remember what the command is in Excel to do the following: If you write a formula with variables, and then you grab the little 'dot' in the lower right corner and pull it down, it modifies the formula by changing the cells automatically. So if my formula is =A5 + B7, the cells below it will look like this:

    =A6 + B8

    =A7 + B9

    =A8 + B10

    =A9 + B11

    and so on....

But what if I want the A column to ascend (like the example above), but I want the other variable to stay the same (so B7 stays B7 for all copies)... how do I do that? I remember once adding something to the B7 (maybe an exclamation mark?), but I can't find it now.

    Thanks!

  • Indianapolis, IN; I need a good recommendation for a family restaurant!?

We are planning a trip through Indianapolis, and need a recommendation for a unique, fun restaurant that will appeal to our kids (ages 10-14). We would like to visit something that will be memorable, unique, interesting, etc. but not too CRAZY expensive. In Texas we have a restaurant called the Magic Time Machine... wild atmosphere, all the waiters dress up in costume, etc. Any kids that go there remember it forever. I'd like to find something like this in Indianapolis (or anywhere within 30 miles of there). Thanks!

  • How can I tell which USB ports on my computer are 2.0?

My computer is a bit old, and I am trying to make sure the ports I have are USB 2.0 instead of 1.1. How can I check that?

  • Can you hear this sound? Please help me with my project!?

I'm doing a survey for a school project, and need to know if you can hear this sound:

    http://www.freemosquitoringtone.org/tones/18798.mp...

Please respond with your age (this is the most important part!) and 'yes' or 'no' (whether you heard the sound or not). Ignore the little ‘snapping’ sound when the audio begins… that is NOT the noise in question (it is a distinctive squeal or whining sound).

Set your speakers at a level you normally listen to music... not too loud, and not too soft.

    Thank you!

p.s. you may have to listen to the mp3 file several times... each time you hit play, it only runs about 3 seconds.
