  • How do I easily (but temporarily) color my hair?

My hair is normally dirty blonde, but I need it to be black for a show. I only need my hair to be black for about a week though. What's the easiest way to accomplish this without staining my hair?

  • Makeup to make me look tired/sad?

I'm playing a character soon that is supposed to look tired. (This character is pretty much at rock bottom. She's convinced that she has ruined her life. She's tired, has been crying, and is just out of it.) How should I do my makeup to help look the part.

Oh, did I mention that I have about two mintues to do it this way??

  • Willy Wonka Jr. Audition?

So the auditions were posted for Willy Wonka Jr. on April 26. That's about a week after I finish my current show, and only a few weeks away. So basically, I'm trying to find my song now, because I won't have much time in the next few weeks. So anyway, the specifics:

I'm sixteen (well, I will be by auditions... I'm currently only fifteen) and I'm hoping to audition for Mrs. Teavee. I've been told that I'm a soprano. (I don't agree, but my future voice teacher says that's what I am.) I consider myself a mezzo. I was hoping to use "Tina's Mother" from Ruthless for my audition song, but I can't find the sheet music, so I'm thinking that I don't have time to find it, order it, and learn it in three weeks. (I was thinking of it for an audition that wouldn't be until January of next year, and then another company posted auditions for this April.) So does anyone else have a suggestion? I've read that Mrs. Teavee is the "Perfect 50's TV Mom", so that's what I'm going with. Thanks in advance!

  • How do you find theatre competitions?

I often read posts on message boards where people are asking about songs or something for theatre competitions. Does anyone know how to find out about those? Ones outside of school mostly, because my school doesn't have a very big theatre program. I live in Illinois if that is important.

  • 50's TV mom in a musical?

Does anyone know of any 50's TV mom-type characters in musicals? (Thing Marion Cunningham or June Cleaver.) I'm trying to find a song for an audition; surely there must be MT characters like that. (For anyone wondering, the character is Mrs. Teavee in Willy Wonka Jr.) Or does anyone even know of just a song that fits that type of character? It would probably need to be a soprano song, but jr shows usually don't look for much range, so don't worry about anything needing to go too high or too low. Any ideas?

  • What's a good dinner theme for "Thursday Theme Night"?

My dad likes to do this thing called "Thursday Theme Night" on Thursdays for dinner. My mom, sister, and I are always having trouble coming up with a good theme. In the past, we've done meals of certain colors, things that start with certain letters, shapes (such as round things or sticks), 50's night, different ethnic foods (Chinese, Italian, etc.), 'family favorites', etc. We've run out of ideas though... (My sister claims to have one for tonight, but then what for next week??) Anybody have a clever one?

  • How can I dress to look shy?

Howdy! I'm auditioning for a shy character in January, and I want to come in an outfit that suggests shy. I've always heard that light blue suggests shy, but I'm not positive. Would a light blue T-shirt be better or a sweater with another shade of blue under it. Or is another color better? And what should I wear on the bottom? Like just jeans (these auditions are never very dressy) or would khakis be better or what?

As for makeup, I've heard that baby pink lip gloss suggests shy, but I'm not sure. What does everyone else suggest?

  • Theatre Dance Steps?

I'm auditioning for Seussical: the Musical in January. I'm hoping to get the role of Gertrude McFuzz. I just finished doing a straight play with her, and she heard me sing a lot during rehearsals. (I sing a lot. lol) I was talking to her about Seussical, and from the way she was talking, it sounds like the dance audition could make or break me as far as Gertrude. (She said "If only you'd have been in the dance [she said the name of the dance from our show, but no one would recognize it here] so I could see if you could dance.") I can dance pretty well, but I've never had any dance training. What are some basic moves I should learn for this audition?

  • Seussical Jr. Auditions (Gertrude)?

I'm auditioning for Seussical Jr. at a local community theatre. They're looking for ages 7-18, and I'm 15. I know the director really well (I just got done doing a show with her) and she really likes me. She has actually said that she could see me as Gertrude and that I had the right kind of voice for it. So I'm going for Gertrude.

I'm thinking about singing "I Can Hear the Bells" from the Broadway musical 'Hairspray'. She [the director] likes this musical, and doesn't care if we sing an overdone song. (Although it's not really that overdone around here.) Does it seem like a good fit for Gertrude? If not, does anyone have a better suggestion? (If you suggest anything from 'Wicked' you will NOT be getting best answer lol)

  • What kind of makeup did the ancient Romans wear?

I'm doing an extra credit assignment for my World History class and he said we could come dressed as a Roman. I'm wearing white and gold Roman clothes and one of the hairstyles from my history book, but I can't figure out what to do with makeup. Makeup is only optional, but if I'm wearing the costume and hair I figured I should do the makeup as well. Any suggestions?

  • Broadway Wallpaper?

Hey everyone! So, I'm bored at home right now until school starts in a couple days... I make desktop wallpaper with pictures and quotes from Broadway musicals. I'm willing to make them for anyone, just tell me what you want and the email address you want it sent to! If you don't have a picture but just specify what you want a picture of, I'll try to get a good one to make a wallpaper, but I'd prefer if you send a link to the picture you want.

  • What is the most make-up you've had to wear for a show?

I'm almost always cast in roles with a lot of make-up. When I was Mrs. Gloop in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' I was supposed to look like a German Peg Bundy. I had a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 people who worked on my makeup for each show. I had about ten coats of bright red lipstick (my lips were SOOOO stained), several coats of four or five different shades of eye shadow, WAY too much blush, etc. For 'Into the Woods' I was Lucinda, and I also wore too much makeup. My face was actually bright orange since I had so much foundation on. I wore extremely bright eyeshadow, and several coats of lipstick. Anyone else?

  • Which songs should I put on my showtunes CD?

I'm making a CD with a bunch of random showtunes for a friend. He's a fourteen year old guy who just finished playing Lefou in Beauty and the Beast. Here are the CD's I have to work with:

    Into the Woods (OBC)

    Little Women

    Annie (original movie)

    Fiddler on the Roof (movie)

The Lion King (OBC and movie)

    Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (movie)

    The Sound of Music (movie)

You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (OBC)

Oklahoma! (not sure which one, I'm going to borrow it from my uncle)

    The Music Man (original movie)

    Tarzan (OBC)

    Children's Letters to God

The Best of Broadway: the American Musical (look it up if you don't know what's on it)

The King and I (maybe, I'm not sure that my uncle has it)

Disneymania 1-3 (NOT showtunes, but if I needed a few more songs...)

Anyways, any suggestions based on that?

  • What shoould I play for my piano competion?

Hey! I enter a piano competition with my school every year. We have three different meets: October, December, and January. I'm trying to pick two or three songs for next year to work on over the summer. The competition is 7-12th grades, and I will be a sophmore next year in level 4 of the Piano Adventures series. A few songs in my resume are:

    Phantom of the Keys*

    Fur Elise

    Clair De Lune

    Norwegian Concerto*

    Tarantella

    The Wedding March*

Love is in the Air (from Charlie Brown)

*used in last year's competition where I got third

Does anyone have any suggestions? It doesn't have to be something that would go with level 4, I start earlier so I can do more challenging pieces. Our judges seem to love really dynamic pieces, as well as faster ones. Thanks in advance!

  • Audition song for "Fiddler on the Roof, Jr."???

I'm planning on auditioning for a local production of "Fiddler on the Roof, Jr." in a couple months. I'm 14 (but I will be 15 at the time of the audition), mezzo-soprano, and will most likely be auditioning for either Golde or Tzeitel (unless they decided to take it up to 18, in which I'll go for Tzeitel or Hodel). Does anyone have a good suggestion for a song to use for my audition? I'm needing a musical theatre song that isn't from the show.

Also, anyone who's been in the show before, what songs and scenes were you asked to use for cold reading?

  • Does anyone have the solo version of "My New Philosophy"?

I'm looking for an online recording (audio/visual or just audio) of the solo version of "My New Philosophy" from 'You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown'. I have the sheet music and I was wanting to see what different people have done with it. Youtube videos are fine, preferred, actually. Thanks in advance!

  • What are your favorite backstage activities/memories?

I have several, but I really enjoy acting the songs out with other castmates. In "Into the Woods" I sang "It Takes Two" (lip-synching) with the Witch's cane. It was kind of weird, yet fun, because there was a skull on the top that I was singing to.

As for memories, in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" at one point Veruca and her parents each slid down a little slide into the magical land of backstage (in the scene where the squirrels threw them down the dumpster) and on closing night we held up signs to rate each slide. It was fun because they'd be sliding and they'd look up and see five or six number 10's held up, and the looks on their faces were priceless!

    Any other backstage fun?

  • Does anyone know of any good monologue sites?

I'm sure that this is all over this site, but I was curious what everyone's favorite monologue sites are. I'm looking specifically for female monologues for a teenager from musicals. NOT TV or movies. Any suggestions?
