I have a lifelong love of learning just about anything. I love history (though I never did well with it), social and cultural issues, entertainment, politics, trivia, you name it. I've found Yahoo! answers to be a great place to get all kinds of view points from people from all walks of life. In some of my questions maybe they're just not worded "correctly", I am perceived to come off as pretentious or trying to stir up trouble. That's not the case but I do love a good debate. How else can you learn unless you challenge conventional wisdom and philosophy? I'm pretty open minded and fairly liberal and not too much offends me, only when I am personally attacked. If I promise to keep an open mind and you do too, I think all could benefit from this type of forum.
For the people that suggest Pascal's Wager to atheists?
Wouldn't it be dishonest to believe in God just in case? If there was a God, wouldn't he be able to see right through that?
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoDo you think it takes more of an open mind to be an atheist or a Christian?
I've been told that I need to have an open mind and embrace Christianity.
I was raised as a Christian and I think it takes much more of an open mind to explore different faiths or unbelief rather than stick with what I was brought up in.
5 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoWhy can most people recognize indoctrination?
In regards to N. Korea's view of Kim Jong-Il, but fail to see the parallel in religion?
3 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoDo you consider some aspects of modern medicine to be playing God?
If so, where do you draw the line and why?
11 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoIf a Christian who has endured much suffering is rewarded in the afterlife?
For maintaining his faith, does it seem fair that a Christian who has led a fairly charmed life is rewarded the same thing? Why isn't their faith put to the same test?
9 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoWhy do some people continue to blame Hitler's atrocities on atheism?
When he himself in speeches and his writings claimed to be doing the work of the Lord?
And please, no 'he wasn't a "real"Christian.' He obviously considered himself one.
10 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoFor Christians who ask atheists where they get their morals from?
Are you implying that morals come only from the Christian God?
If you think people of other religious faiths can be moral, how do you reconcile this with the belief that all other religions are false?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoAtheists and Agnostics, do you believe that Jesus, the historical figure, existed?
If so, what evidence did you find? I know about Josephus, I'm wondering if there's more.
22 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoQuestion for atheists or agnostics who used to be believers?
Do you find that now that you don't believe that you feel liberated?
It has taken me a few years to be comfortable with the idea of not believing, but now that I'm embracing it I no longer worry that I'm not "good enough" for God. I don't see the bad things in life as my punishment or some lesson to be learned or all because of "The Fall". Bad things happen. Good things happen. Natural disasters are just that... natural, not God's wrath upon us undeserving humans. Did anyone else have a tremendous sense of freedom and think that life is what you make it and not some arbitrary "Master Plan"?
10 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoAny Christians who were former atheists?
What was the overwhelming evidence that persuaded you to become a Christian? I would consider myself an agnostic (was raised as a Christian) and would be open to Christianity (or any other religion, really) if there was sufficient evidence.
What makes it so believable to you now?
6 AnswersReligion & Spirituality9 years agoWhy is it morally reprehensible for a person not to come to the aid?
Of someone being murdered or raped or a child being abused, but when God does it, it's explained away as free will?
If you say that God did intervene by having someone there to help at the right place and the right time, then why doesn't he do this all the time?
2 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy do some Christians think?
If they were born and raised in a country where the overwhelming majority of people are of another faith, that they would still have found their way to Christianity?
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoIf God knew he would be sending Jesus to earth?
Why did he even bother with having the Jews around? How are the Jews the chosen people if they don't accept Jesus as the Messiah and would go to hell for it?
10 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAre Eagles fans as bad as I hear they are?
I'm going to the Colts @ Eagles game in a few weeks. I've been warned to hide the fact that I'm there to cheer on the opposing team. I was told about the jail cell, vehicle vandalism, people harassing children and old folks. Is it true or is it an exaggeration? This will be my first NFL game.
9 AnswersFootball (American)1 decade agoPro-lifers who approve of abortion in the case of rape or incest?
How are those babies any less deserving of a chance at life than those conceived under different circumstances?
Why do some people pick and choose when the exact same procedure is justifiable or not?
For the record, I am pro-choice. I just find it mind boggling that some pro-lifers make exceptions.
7 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoChristians: When someone asks the really hard questions?
Do you feel it would show a lack of faith on your part or some other flaw in your understanding of God if you just simply say "I don't know."
I see so many questions not get answered and instead Bible verses are thrown out there like a knee jerk reaction to the really difficult questions that can't be explained.
I believe in science completely, but I know science hasn't answered all the questions either. I'm completely fine with admitting that I don't know.
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoDo you believe everything happens for a reason and it's all part of God's plan?
Okay, that sounds good on the surface, but can anyone shed some light on this for me?
A few days ago I read this news story about an 8 day old baby who was raped by her father. She was literally torn apart and required massive reconstructive surgery.
I'm going to concede that God didn't do it, her father did. But tell me, what was the lesson to be learned for this infant? Was it necessary for this to happen so that she could deal with adversity in her life or to become strong in her faith?
And yes, I am familiar with the concept of God moving in mysterious ways and to lean not on my own understanding. What I would like to know is if anyone can give me a plausible reason. Actually I'd like to hear ANY reason you can think of.
13 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoAbout God and free will?
If bad things happen because of man's free will and we are given free will so we won't just become robots, does that mean God is more interested that we turn to him because we freely choose to do so than he is in preventing atrocities?
16 AnswersReligion & Spirituality1 decade agoWhy would someone who is not a Christian want to become one?
When Christians cannot even manage to agree amongst themselves?
Oh and let me acknowledge that I know this is not unique to Christians.
