porch light electrical issue?
Our house was built in 1941. When we had our inspection, the porch light worked just fine. Now it doesn't work at all. Yes, we have tried new bulbs. The strange thing is that there is a switch outside our door, which may be for an outdoor outlet, and a switch inside our door. We've tried various methods of switching one off, the other one, both on...but there is also a motion sensor thingamabob (technical term) outside near the light. Could this be the source of our problem? Any suggestions, aside from a costly electrician? Easy fixes we can do.
7 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoI died my hair sort of an auburn color, but up by my roots, it's kind of purple...?
I actually like the color on most of my hair, because it was previously dyed and the color didn't take as much as it did on my roots, but I do not enjoy having purple-ish roots and am wondering the best way to remedy that? Is there anything I can do besides lighten and then re-dye my hair? I want to avoid too much processing, but I think if I try to dye over it, it will turn who knows what color next? Any ideas?
4 AnswersHair1 decade agoI get the hiccups every single day. What's with that?
Seriously. Every Day. It's usually just five or six hiccups and then they go away, at least until the next time. Sometimes they hurt. What's the science behind this, and has anyone else experienced such a thing?
2 AnswersOther - Health1 decade agoThe soap door in our dishwasher isn't opening during the wash cycle?
It's a newer Kenmore Quiet Guard standard, and all of the sudden the door will not open to let the soap out during the cycle. I tried cleaning around the hinge and the entire area, thinking it may be stuck, but, alas...any ideas?
5 AnswersMaintenance & Repairs1 decade agoTips and ideas for hanging curtains on big window?
We have a teeny tiny house, so furniture placement isn't really up for discussion. I need some advice on curtains that will go on a big window that has a couch underneath it. If I get long curtains, will I need to pull the couch away from the wall? Is there another option for curtains? I know this is trivial stuff, but I'm ready to spruce up our place.
5 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 decade agoMy sewing machine isn't pulling fabric through properly, what's going on?
I have an old, older than I am, singer and all of the sudden, it will not feed the fabric through, I have to yank from the other side to get it through and then the bottom stitches get all messed up. Basically it's stitching in only one place. My mom, to whom the sewing machine originally belonged to, seems to think that it's just old and dead, but I'm hoping it can be repaired. I've checked an adjusted eveything I can think to do, so any suggestions would be helpfull. Thanks.
7 AnswersHobbies & Crafts1 decade agomystery water in our fridge...?
Our refrigerator, a new-ish whirpool, leaks water internally. We have both the freezer and fridge set to the ideal setting, according to the dial, and there's no ice built up in the freezer. On the roof our the fridge, toward the back, there is some type of coil that has been barely covered over with ice and is dripping and we end up with an inch or so of water in our crisper drawers and sometimes it leaks on to the floor of our kitchen when we open the door. We have tried adjusting the temp both cooler and warmer, without any luck. Any ideas ? Also, the freezer has a built in ice maker, but is missing parts and no currently in use and the unit is stacked.
5 AnswersOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoraised garden beds directly on grass?
we're going to have a couple raised beds for growing veggies this spring, if it ever gets here, and I'm wondering if it's okay to put the frame of the bed and the dirt to fill it directly on the grass in our yard? I've read to lossen up the soil first, but do I need to actually dig up the sod first? Do I need any sort of barrier between the grass and my dirt? Any helpful suggestions for raised beds would be appreciated. Thanks!
8 AnswersGarden & Landscape1 decade agoFun things to do with a toddler in Seattle?
We're going to Seattle the last week in March for about a week. We're staying pretty much downtown, by the paramount, and are planning on doing the zoo, aquarium, emp, sam...I'm just looking for more ideas along the lines of places to eat, beaches that are close to town, shopping...any ideas from locals with toddlers. We're just coming from Spokane, so we sort of know the area and will have a car. Thanks.
5 AnswersSeattle1 decade agoAverage cost on changing the starter in a dodge neon?
I looked up the part on the napa website and it was about 200 bucks. Ouch. This car has been a giant pain in the A lately, but is our only, so we have to keep it running. The mechanic told me that the starter isn't engaging,or shifting down where it's supposed to go, something to do with the teeth, and it occasionaly makes this awful screeching noise when you start it up. He said to shut it off and restart it until it didn't make that noise because if I drove it like that, then I will need a starter a lot sooner that I would otherwise. Does this sound right? Is there anything we can do in the meantime, aside from replacing the whole thing?
5 AnswersDodge1 decade agoDo they manufacture cfl lights for vanity type bulbs?
I mean the round bulbs that many people have in their bathrooms, over the sink and what not. We're in a rental, so changing the entire fixture is not an option, and I don't really want three bare bulbs in there, either.
2 AnswersGreen Living1 decade agoWould you stop to help someone stuck in the snow?
Ok, this may be more of a rant, but today I got stuck in the snow. We've gotten about 15 inches in the past few days and while the roads have technically been plowed, they're far from driver friendly. So today, I was going uphill, doing just fine, when I noticed a bid ol truck stuck at the intersection where I was going, so I had to stop for that, and once I stopped I couldn't get going again. I was there for probably about 15 minutes, in the middle of the road, trying every gear, reverse...of course I didn't have sand, so I tried throwing some cherios under my tires, it's okay, you can laugh, and that didn't work, either, big surprise. A cop even drove by me and didn't stop. Meanwhile, my two year old son is strapped in his car seat, hysterical because his mom's getting there too, when finally a nice lady stopped and helped me by moving some trash cans and giving me some sand. Some people even glared at me as they drove by.What's wrong with people that they won't even help each other?
4 AnswersOther - Society & Culture1 decade agoWhich is the more likely culprit for sudden bad gas mileage?
I have a 95 Dodge Neon, and before anyone tells me it's having problems because it's a neon, I'm well aware the faults of thiese cars, but it's our only, so...save it. Sorry, I had my plugs, plug wires, coil, valve cover...replaced a few weeks ago, the mechanic said it would help my bad gas mileage, but it hasn't. I've heard that it could possibly be my fuel filter, or my O2 sensor, which is more likely? Or any other ideas?
18 AnswersDodge1 decade agoNew tax filing status-was previously head of household...?
I was married September 1st, but previous to that I was considered head of household because I was a single mama. I did change my w-2 after we got married and I'm not sure how our taxes this year will work. Is there a certain length of time during the year that corelates to me still being able to file head of household, just this one last time?
3 AnswersUnited States1 decade agoIs it true that broken bones are less likely to swell than minor sprains?
I was shoveling our foot of fresh snow today when my ankle rolled. I heard several pops when it happened. We went to urgent care and took x-rays, but I have broken this same ankle several times and the doctor couldn't tell if the fracture on the x-ray was new or old and has to have a radiologist read the x-ray, sometime tomorrow, so for now, they're treating it like it's broken. My husband is suprised by the lack of sweeling and told me that's indicative of it being broken and not just sprained. Is this true? He is a big science geek and did say when he broke his leg it didn't swell, which is how he knew it was broken. Anyone have experience with this?
6 AnswersInjuries1 decade agoDodge Neon problems...?
Ok. I have a 95 neon with about 150,000 miles on it. It's been running pretty well all this time, had a timing belt replaced in 2005, and has been maintained decently. It started acting like it wanted to die when it was in gear and I was stopped at lights. I took it in and was told that I had a couple bad seals on my plug wires and needed a new coil, new spark plugs, wires...all to the tune of 550 bucks. That did solve the problem, but the next day I went to start it and it didn't want to turn over at first, I would turn the key and it just kind of clicked, and when I tried again it fired right up, then when I got to work I was backing up and it suddenly died on me, so I called the shop that replaced my coil, wires...and they looked at it and said I had a bad battery cell and replaced that for another 60 bucks, only it's still happening, and I'm not sure what the deal is. In gear it sort of surges when I'm stopped and it's suddenly getting worse gas mileage...what gives?
