  • Alcohol rehab grant for 29/yo USMC disabled combat vet in Northeast Ohio?

I am a USMC vet who is 60% disabled from various combat experiences. I am looking for any information on any grants or perhaps any help at all for alcohol rehab, because I self medicate. I am ready to change, but cannot afford the good rehab centers I need. I usually go to the VA for primary care and PTSD help, but the VA does not offer any rehab centers that are intensive like I need. I am in NE Ohio near Cleveland. I cannot do this on my own, but cannot afford $15,000 for help. I would be so thankful for info. I've been scouring the web constantly for this, and feel like I will never be able to get help.

  • Parenting Question? 9 year old boy?

I am a 28 year old man who has four children. Yes, I am married to their mother. We have been married for almost 11 years (I know, we started young). We have 2 boys 9 and 7, and 2 girls 5 and 3. I try to be the best Dad I can, but most of the time I fail miserably, but I do feel bad for my failures and try to do better. My oldest son is very hard to raise. He is a good kid and does well in school, but he doesnt listen to ANYTHING his mother or I tell him to do. If I am super nice and compassionate, he will not do his chores. If I ride his ***, he gives me a hard time, but finally does them. He litterally takes 2 hours to sweep our 10x10 kitchen because he gets so distracted. And takes the same amount of time to do his 10 minute homework. I have to tell him 1000 times to finish and finally he does. I feel bad for yelling at him and riding his *** all the time because I don't want to ruin his childhood or anything, but it seems like if I'm not a dick, he wouldn't do anything. Believe me, I've tried every approach, but being a dick is all that registers in his brain. He just won't do what I ask him when I sit him down and talk rationally, and although he hates when I ride him, he does complete his homework and chores (albeit slow). What do I do? I have 3 other children that need attention too and I don't have the time to be a Sigmund Freud with him. I don't want to make him hate me, but he needs to get is s*^t done and riding him is all that seems to work. Please help!

  • What are the mechanisms for evolution?

I understand that random mutation and natural selection are the typical answers given, but that doesn't seem to completely explain it. For instance, we know around 10,000 years ago humans started developing the ability to digest milk enzymes past adolescence because of humans raising cattle and harvesting their milk. However, natural selection doesnt seem to explain this mutation. I mean, does the body "know" that it is digesting cow milk and says "oh crap, i better adapt a way to digest this for future generations." It just doesnt seem to cut it to say that the ones who could digest milk survived and propegated that mutatiin to later generations and the other ones died out. It seems that organisms' DNA seems to know when a change is needed due to environment and change accordingly rather than "only the ones that had this mutation survived." I realise that this happens sometimes i.e. animals with thick fur were able to survive a quick cold climate change, but natural selection alone doesnt seem to adequately explain the diversity of life we see. I can see how it would weed out certain traits, but not give us such variety through natural selection and random mutation alone. From my uneducated thinking, it seems as though the DNA or genes know when to change and react to environmental stimuli accordingly. Please explain to me if/ why I am wrong. Maybe Im not seeing the whole pictue here.

  • Is free will and randomness an illusion?

After much thought and researching on philosophy, religion, and various branches of science, I am still stumped on this one. For instance, the universe appears chaotic and random, but this is a misnomer. It is really just very complicated but follows a specific set of laws. Even with the butterfly effect in play, the set laws of nature caused the butterfly to land where it did meaning that the whole idea of a butterfly effect is meaningless. Even evolution works this way in an apparent random way, but that is only because we are not in posession of all the facts. This seems also at play in human free will. We think we are choosing and making decisions all the time, but really are we just constantly picking what will give us the greatest amount of pleasure. Even saving money and losing weight are things we choose because we know later down the line it will cause us more pleasure and the little sarifice now is worth more than the anxiety of retiring fat and broke. I certainly do not want to believe this is how the universe operates, but I want to find the truth more than be comfortable. (Free will illusion again) The more I research and think about it, the more it appears that the Big Bang was nothing more than something like the start of an intricate vastly complicated comput program that we are just scratching the surface of. But I would love to be proven wrong!

  • 4g sucks...how will they fix it?

Everything is going to 4g next year. It is faster but it literally eats your data allowance 10 times faster. If you normally use 2 gigs a month on 3g, that would be 20 gigs on 4g. It sounds wonderful, but you could eat through your whole allowance in 3 hours if you aren't careful. This sucks really bad, is there anyway they can fix this? Or can you still use 3g when all the companies go 4g? Otherwise I'm dropping my smartphone plan. 4g is better, but definitely not 10 times better.

  • Why is everyone so excited about wireless carriers going to 4g?

I have Verizon. I have a 10 gig data plan and use nearly all of it every month. I have the option to use 4g on my phone but it eats literally 10x more data than 3g. On 3g if I watch a movie, it uses .2-.3 gigs. On 4 g it uses 2-3 gigs. I know 4g is faster and a cleaner reception, but if you normally use 2 gigs of data on 3g and now that becomes 20 gigs, it just doesn't seem worth it to me to get a faster signal. Why would people not complain about this??????

  • Common descent vs. Adam and Eve?

First off, I am not a creationist. And I definitely don't believe the Adam and Eve story. So that's out of the way. But one of the common arguments against the Adam and Eve story is that if humans came from 2 individuals, they would inbreed themselves out of existence within a few generations. But evolution states that all living things came from a common descent (essentially inbreeding from the same genetic material) and yet here we and all other life on earth exist. What is the difference? Creationists say early humans had a greater genetic diversity so inbreeding wouldn't have been a problem. Any takers?

  • Is Israel becomong a nation again proof of the Bibles truth?

First off I am an exchristian so please no apologetics. It just seems so uncanny that a people could survive.1800 years with no nation then in one day (as prophesied frankly) get a country back. No other country has this ever happened to. This must be explained. What is the moderate ( non Christian) take on this. Please nothing about faith and Jesus, just rational reasoning from a logical standpoint.

  • Wicca / Asatru question?

I am a Practicing Wiccan and I wear a Thors hammer pendant with a pentacle inscribed in it. I have been told that this is inappropriate as I am not a practitioner of Asatru. I just think Thor is cool as hell and I admire some aspects of Asatru even though I'm a Wiccan. I don't really care much what ppl think but I dont want to give.a.wrong impression. So should I wear it or not?
