  • Toys for one year old birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

    I am looking for toys for my daughter's first birthday. I don't really need all of these new "educational toys" that will be tossed aside for the box (who wouldn't want to play with the box :) or anything super expensive, as I am pressed for money. I can't for the life of me remember what I played with as a child, but was hoping some of you might.

    What toys do you remember playing with, or what toys did you get your children that they absolutely loved ;)

  • What to do with grandmother?

    My grandmother has recently lost her house and is moving across the country to live with us. We have not really ever had a relationship (this meaning my whole family, not just me). She is 63 and I am looking for activities for her, so that she doesn't go crazy with nothing fun to do. I don't really know all that she likes, however, I do know all about what she doesn't like. She doesn't like church or anything religiously related.

    She does like Bingo.

    She's not going to know anyone here, and I don't think she is incredibly social. She likes to have a few close friends.

    I would really appreciate it if you could give me some things to do. Thanks.

  • What to get my dad for Father's Day?

    My father is one of those people who are impossible to shop for. He won't say anything he wants, if he actually wants anything.

    He doesn't...

    Like golf or sports of any kind really.

    Drink

    Have an office, desk, or wear suits (he wears a uniform)

    Have a hobby of any sort whatsoever

    Listen to music that he doesn't already have

    Play an instrument

    He isn't fascinated by anything. He basically works so hard, that by the time he goes home, he is tired and plays on facebook/watches t.v. But he isn't into the massage stuff very much. I already gave him goody baskets with snacks and food for his Birthday. I am absolutely clueless.

    Also, I recently had a baby girl and would like to know if anyone has any cute suggestions for something I could give him from her. :) Shes only 6 months old.

  • This really hurts and I don't know what to do about it?

    Last night at work, I stepped on a sensor tag. I was wearing a very thin flip flop, and the pin went completely into my foot. It hurt really bad, but now, I feel like I can't even step on it. I have a horrible shooting pain if I even move my foot. I am dreading going to work tonight, because This hurts so bad. I think it might be infected. What can I do to make it stop hurting. Thanks so much.

  • Why does my baby do this?

    When sleeping, my baby likes to crane her neck backwards, and shape her body almost like a c, arching her back, and shoving her face into the floor, bed, or me. The other thing is that she likes to have something in her face. She will pull her blanket into her face, or pull her clothes up (if she can) and cover her face. I am constantly worrying that she is going to suffocate herself. I wish I could give a better description of what she is doing, but she is always shoving her face into whatever she can find. Is this normal? She is only 5 months old.

  • What do I do now that she has outgrown this?

    My almost 5 month old is extremely chubby and no longer fits in her infant car seat. She is too big, we can't even clip the little thingys together. I have convertible car seats, so that's not the problem, but now i don't know what to do when I go grocery shopping. I used to just leave her in the carrier, as most parents do, but now she won't fit. She can't sit up on her own, so I can't put her in the cart, and while holding her is an option, saturday shopping at walmart for 2-3 hours is hard enough without her in my arms. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to products they make that might help.

    P.S. She has outgrown her sling, but I thought about getting a front carrier, but I thought I'd see if anyone else had any good suggestions first.

  • Would he be able to do this?

    I have a 4 month old daughter. Her father is not around. He left when he found out I was pregnant. I did not put him on the birth certificate. He saw her once, (an accidental run-in) and then suddenly wanted to be involved, but when I told him he would have to take a paternity test first and would be responsible for child support, he said "never mind" (in those exact words).

    I do not expect him to make any effort any time soon to have any part of this. I know him well enough to know that he really does not care. However, I fear that one day, years from now, he might actually grow up and then try to come back into our lives. Would he have any way to do this, if he hasn't been involved. I live in louisiana by the way, and am asking if anyone knows anything legally. thanks a bunch.

  • Diaper Rash... please help me before it gets too bad?

    My daughter is 4 1/2 months old and has recently been introduced to rice cereal. I know many people say wait till 6 months, but the problem is that she was drinking so much formula that she would cry and make herself sick. It would slosh in her stomach and it was just terrible. I started putting a little rice cereal in her bottle and now she is happy. however, after a little while of cereal she started pooping non-stop all day, and twice at night. She has gotten the worse diaper rash ever. I am currently treating it with destin but will be going back to the store for some other things. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to get. Do you think its the cereal, if it is, what should I do.

    I would stop using the cereal, but she is SO HUNGRY, she's a pretty big baby and she eats so much. Please help...

  • Meaning of the name Shelby?

    I have done a lot fo research on my name, Shelby, and have found out much about it. I am well aware of basically every aspect of my name, both as a first name and a surname, and about its origins and meanings, however, I am having trouble with the Old Norse meanings. I know that the surname Shelby is from the English, meaning sheltered town and I know that the first name shelby means Willow, coming from the old norse selja, but it also means on the ledge estate. I can find nothing on the second meaning.

    Also, if you have any other info, that would be great.

  • Rice formula at 3 and a half months?

    Alrighty, my baby is 3 and a half months old. She is kinda on the large side. 14 pounds a couple of weeks ago. She is eating anywhere from 32 to 40 oz a day, but has recently started eating more. She has slept through the night, and I mean like 9 hours, since about 2 months but has recently started waking up 3-4 times throughout the night, and downing 6-8 oz bottles each time. This is with her increased daytime eating as well. I am wondering if it is a good time to start on rice cereal? My mom doesn't really know, as her pediatrician had my brother on rice cereal at 2 months because he was starving.

    I do bottle feed. And I know that babies aren't supposed to really get solids till 4-6 months, but I really think she needs the practice now, because she is so hungry. she is eating so much formula that she's making her tummy hurt, but she's still just begging for food. she acts like I never feed her. She doesn't have a problem with her formula, and she's not puking or anything, she just seems really hungry. Any suggestions?

  • How to save my cantaloupe ?

    This past weekend, I planted my spring garden. Yesterday, a cold rain came through, and I was slightly worried, but everything was okay. I checked my plants this morning, and everything is okay except for my cantaloupe. My watermelon is looking fine, but the cantaloupe looks droopy and looks like it might not make it. This is my first year planting cantaloupe, but I asked around, and checked the university agriculture center, and they all said that now was the time to plant it. Also, I live in Southern Louisiana, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans

    Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong, or what I can do to fix it? Thanks a lot. :D

  • How to get them off of Facebook...?

    My parents spend their whole night on facebook.

    This is not an exaggeration, they really spend all of their time on facebook. We have talked about the problem recently, and they said that they feel bad and that they want to change things and make more time for the family. And they have, but just a little. They still spend sooooo much time on facebook. Their marriage is failing, kinda. They acknowledge that they feel like roommates, not married people, and they hardly do anything together. I just feel like our family is falling apart and there is little I can do about it.

    I try to talk them, but often times I get no response, because they are so engrossed in their conversations, or I get like a 2 word response a couple of minutes later. How can I get them to be more concerned about their family, then their virtual friends and games?

  • What would you call this...?

    What would you call this "opposite of a metaphor" thing. I know that a metaphor would compare two objects (without the like and as) but what would you call something that is contrasting. For example, Shakespeare's sonnet 130...

    My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;

    Coral is far more red than her lips' red;

    If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;

    If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.

    I have seen roses damask'd, red and white,

    But no such roses see I in her cheeks;

    And in some perfumes is there more delight

    Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.

    I love to hear her speak, yet well I know

    That music hath a far more pleasing sound;

    I grant I never saw a goddess go;

    My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:

    And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare

    As any she belied with false compare.

    There's a lot of comparing in this, and I wondered what literary devices are actually used.

  • Pay rate for babysitter?

    I am a single mom with a three month old. I work night's and weekends, and am a full time student otherwise. Her grandparents have agreed to babysit her, and I prefer this, as I know they will actually care for her, and spend lots of time with her, however, during the week they don't always get home before I go to work. I have found a responsible teen, who I know well, who is willing to watch her. She will be watching her 1-2 hours, three times a week. I am not sure what a good pay rate is, and she simply said that she'll take whatever I give her :/

    I have everything together (bottles, diapers, extra clothes) and my baby isn't colicky, or fussy, in fact she's just great. She isn't a difficult baby, and really won't require as much attention at that time of day. I was wondering what would be a good amount to pay this girl per hour.

    I live in Southern Louisiana btw.

  • What happens if I drive without a license?

    Note that I have a drivers license, it just happens to be somewhere that I can't get to before work today. I need to drive to work, and figure this wont be a problem, since I do have a license, just not on me tonight. Am I wrong about this?

  • Is anything wrong with the baby?

    My baby is 2 and a half months now. Within the last week she has started getting diarrhea. She has always had a very predictable one poop a day, since birth, but now shes getting diarrhea and sometimes more than once a day. She also has been a very good sleeper since five weeks. But this last week, she has started waking up just screaming in the middle of the night, and during naps. This isn't normal for her. She has become very hard to console, and isn't wanting to go to sleep. She's been pretty easy to put to sleep before. Also, when she sleeps, she fusses (also something that just started this week) She hasn't had a temperature, so I was just wondering if this is completely normal, or if something is wrong. Thanks...
