  • How do you connect a paired Bluetooth device in Windows 10?

I am not talking about discovering and pairing a new device. In Windows 10, all my bluetooth devices previously discovered and paired just sit there doing nothing when I turn them on. Clicking on their icon doesn t let them connect. They sit there as paired devices but I cannot connect to them because there seems to be no straightforward "connect" button in Windows 10.

  • Why don t my rats use their toys?

I got my two rats all kinds of cool stuff, like a luxury exercise wheel (12 inch), hammocks, tunnels but they never use any of them. They are housed in a 3 level cage but they spend most of the time in their shoebox sleeping or else in bed with me (a couple of hours a day) or they are eating. They sleep so much, like cats! I am with them all day every day. They are males about 7 months old. Is this normal?

  • How do you give your reluctant rat antibiotics?

This happened with both my rats. The vet gave me some doxycycline for cats & dogs to give to my rats for an respiratory infection. He said it was specially formulated with a nice taste and they should love it. Well the first dose they totally loved it like it was a new kind of treat. By the second dose I had to hide it in a noodle for them to take it. By the third time they wouldn t touch the stuff. When I smeared it on the cheek, they frantically rubbed it off with their paws, jumped to their bedding and used the bedding to frantically clean their paws that s how much they hated the stuff! So now I have no idea how to keep medicating them as they are way too smart for their own good. Nothing, not even peanut butter, mayonnaise or sweet stuff will get them anywhere near their medicine. They are too small for me to force them to take it. What do I do? Any ideas?

  • Is it safe to let a rat nuzzle your eye?

To pet rat keepers: I let my pet rats nuzzle my eye-lids and my lips as a way of bonding with them. This lets them know I trust them totally and they can trust me totally, which they do. Neither of them has ever bitten or even so much as nipped me, but everyone around me says I am crazy and one day I will end up with my eyelid torn off. I think this is rubbish. Are there any other rat owners out there who do this? What's your experience?

  • How do I become a Christian when it triggers psychosis?

My psychiatrist has ordered me to stay far away from anything and everything to do with Christianity, the Bible, church and prayer. Everytime I get involved in these things it triggers a major psychotic episode and I get very sick, and have even ended up in hospital. If I stay away from Christianity, I am usually ok. How can I be saved though in this situation? Am I doomed to hell because Christianity triggers severe mental illness in me?

  • How do account for the supernatural without ruling it out a priori?

How do we account for the "supernatural" without just ruling it out by way of "logical assumption" or relegating it to the realm of phenomenological aporia? I am an atheist but I had one of those nagging experiences recently which I just cannot explain away by appealing to logic or semiological structuralism. It hasn't changed the "Grundsaetze" which define me, but it leaves me with this nagging doubt that everything I believe in is wrong... (PS - Please read carefully & make sure you understand exactly what I'm asking before you post. Thx-lah.)

  • Why did a good God use brutal evolution to create the earth?

Christianity & Evolution: Theistic evolutionists state that evolution is a scientific fact compatible with the Bible. God created the earth by means of evolution.

In Genesis 1 however, at the end of each day the Bible states that God saw that his creation was good. However, evolution appears to be anything but "good" in the benevolent sense that we interpret the word.

Evolution is full of violence and death, predators ruthlessly hunting and killing prey, untold suffering and death just so that the very fittest may survive in the context of their natural selection. For all the abject human misery the cholera bacterium causes, we can hardly blame it for trying to pass on its DNA, survive and evolve the only way it knows how to.

So how is the often violent, uncaring and arbitrary process of evolution reconciled with a good and loving God? Couldn't he have chosen a better method by which to create life on earth (eg as recorded in Genesis 1)?

Isn't the best argument creationists have against Christians who accept evolution that evolution by definition is an extremely unpleasant and painful way by which to advance life? The evidence is all for evolution and natural selection. So unless God is a God who loves blood, suffering and violence, I think the science of origins excludes b y definition any belief in a benevolent, good, loving Creator. Christianity and evolution are incompatible. The best option is atheism.

I'd like to hear what Christians who accept Darwinian evolution as scientific fact have to say about this.

("Creation Science" folk - don't bother, please stay away from this, nothing you say ever ends up making any sense.)

  • Jeder Tag Or Jeden Tag?

    German Grammar experts.

    Which is more likely:

JedeR Tag kostet mich Geld... (Jed- Nominativ)

JedeN Tag kostet mich Geld... (Jed- Akkusativ)

Is either variation possible/grammatical (depending on emphasis), or not?

    I would tend to translate

"Jeder tag kostet mich Geld" as "Each day (NOM) costs me (AKK) money (AKK)"

and "Jeden Tag kostet mich Geld" as "It (NOM) costs me (DAT) money (AKK) each day (AKK der Zeit)".

    Would you agree or disagree?

Please only answer this question if you are a native German speaker, or you know intimately the more differences between the Nominative/Accusative/Dative & Genitive Cases in German. Cheers!

  • Assuming God does not exist, how can we derive an authentic ethical system from anything?

Assuming atheists are correct and there is no God, is there any possibility of something like a universal system of moral/ethical principles or absolutes that transcend human existence? In other words, if everyone upon dying just goes into eternal annihilation why should anyone ultimately care what happens to anyone else, assuming you will never be caught or punished? Why not just wreak havoc like Hitler or Stalin or Mao did? They had their fun and they're not going to suffer for it or care now what history thinks of them seeing as they no longer exist.

  • Which do you prefer - Dolby Digital or DTS?

I'm wondering what people think sounds better in 2011 with hi-quality 5.1 speaker systems so ubiquitous in homes nowadays --> Dolby Digital or DTS? I know there's always been a lot of controversy but I always just wrote it off to being something like the WMA @ 192 vs MP3 @ 192 debate - ie you'd have to be a Mozart to actually discern any difference & not being one, I definitely cannot so just defaulted to Dolby Digital without even bothering to compare.

But I actually did a subjective test using the 5.1 DD & DTS mixes of a Depeche Mode reissue (Some Greater Reward) and turned down all but the rear channels and noticed a massive difference - DD sounds a whole lot weaker, flatter and lacks dynamic punch compared to DTS in a big way. I also compared it to the 1411 CD track run through the ProLogic II Music Matrix just to make sure my ears weren't totally deceiving me.

I am now an instant convert to DTS - it is way, way better than DD. What do others think? I know about the tech specs of the codecs eg that DTS uses a higher bit-rate etc etc - interested in subjective opinions & experiences here, though techie enlightenment is welcome for sure.

  • Why is Mary on the right and Jesus on the left in Church?

In Catholic churches, from the perspective of "God" (if we take God to be facing the people and the people facing toward the tabernacle where God is present in the Eucharistic elements), statues of Mary are always to the right of the tabernacle and statues of Jesus to the left of the tabernacle. What, if any, is the reason for this? Wouldn't it make more sense to have Jesus to the right of the tabernacle seeing as the Creed says "and [Jesus] sits at the right hand of the Father from where He will come in glory..."?

  • Can a re-confirmed Catholic still receive communion?

I was baptized and confirmed as a Roman Catholic. Then I left the Church and was confirmed as an Anglican. Now I've decided to return to the Catholic faith. My question is: am I still a Catholic? Is there any kind of process that needs to be followed before I can receive Holy Communion in a Roman catholic church again?

  • Why do electromagnetic waves only advance in time?

I'm a layman and no physicist but it strikes me that self-propagating electromagnetic waves propagate through the electromagnetic field in all directions in space, but they only advance in time. Ie, there's no such thing as a retarded electromagnetic wave. Well none that has been detected in any case.

But I thought space-time was a singular, unified continuum so what mechanism is it that stops such waves from travelling in all directions in time also? Why don't we get radio messages from the future, only from the past?

  • How do electromagnetic fields propagate through space?

Just thinking about radio & bluetooth & wireless internet & c. it strikes me that most waves need a medium to propagate through, such as sound waves through air. But electromagnetic fields are described as self-propagating. But what does this mean exactly?

It sounds almost like magic but I'm sure it's not.

I would appreciate an answer that does not involve field equations.

  • My cat is really bored :(?

I recently got a one year old neutered male cat whom I let play outside during the day until it became obvious that for whatever reason this cat is absolutely hopeless at jumping! I've had to rescue him three times, once from the backyard of a very grumpy and unfriendly neighbour who wouldn't even open the door to let me collect him. (I ended up lowering a trellis into his yard to get my cat back.)

So now he has to stay inside but he is absolutely bored. I've tried everything: toys like ping pong balls etc. only entertain him for a few minutes, same with hanging toys from lampshades. Even hanging one from a circular fan didn't keep him busy. Most of the time he just sits at the window wailing and crying to go outside. I can't make an enclosure for him as it's not practical where I live. What else can I do to keep him happy? (short of getting him a companion which I'm not ready for just now.) I have tried to let him outside while watching him but I can't stay outside all day long and I can't play with him 12 hours a day either!

  • Is there really a Christian hell?

And if there is really a hell, is it all fire and brimstone? Why would God tolerate people burning in the most horrible agony for eternity?

Do people really get sent to hell just because they were unlucky enough not hear the Gospel before they died?

If God is perfect, how can he tolerate the existence of an eternal hell? If God loves people, how can he let people stay there forever? Doesn't this belief imply that God is really actually angry, wrathful and something of a sadist?

  • Is my cat over-dependent on me?

My cat is constantly crying for attention. When I play with him or he's just been fed or tired he's okay, as long as I am in sight, but otherwise he'll just sit there crying and he follows me around the house wherever I go all day long (I'm at home most of the time). And if I dare shut him out of the room, all hell breaks loose. Is he over-dependent? Obviously there's no way I'm going to "punish" or "discipline" him for doing what cats do, but is there anything I can do to get him to entertain himself instead of constantly needing me to pay him attention? He's an indoors cat (as I live in Australia), but I feel kind of bad about forcing him to be indoors & was thinking maybe I should let him outside for a while daily so he can just be a normal cat?

  • How does "the dole" (basic unemployment benefits) work in the Netherlands?

I'm a Dutch citizen who's lived in Australia for more than 25 years. I was thinking, if I was kicked out of Australia one day for some reason and had to suddenly go back to Holland but couldn't get a job there (my Dutch isn't that good) would I, as a Dutch citizen, be eligible for any government assistance, never having worked there?

Does Holland have a basic unemployment benefit for people who've never had job and not paid for insurance (eg school leavers for example?) If so how much is it? Is it enough to live off?

Would be interested to know this info, thanks.

  • How do you survive on the dole in the UK?

How do people live off the dole in the UK? I read that the adult rate (over 25) of unemployment benefits payment is only £60.50 per week which seems very meagre!

In Australia the basic adult rate (over 21) is $228 per week which is £127 per week and most renters also get around $40 per week (£22) housing assistance.

That's almost impossible to survive on here though, so how do you guys in the UK live off half that much especially with prices in the UK being 2-3 times as much in Australia? Do you get extra benefits or high rates of housing assistance or something? Cheers.
