3 AnswersOther - Computers6 years agoHelp with variances?
So, I understand what a variance is; it's the standard deviation before you take the square root. However, with this problem that my teacher has given me, I can't seem to figure out how to apply that to get the answer.
Here's the question:
A population is normally distributed with mean 42.3 and standard deviation 2.8. The variance for the sampling distribution for samples of size 10 is...
It's a multiple choice question, so I'll list the answers here:
(A) 0.028
(B) 0.280
(C) 0.784
(D) 0.885
(E) 2.479
Here's my thought process so far in trying to figure out the equation:
Since the standard deviation is given, you could square that value.... but that answer doesn't work :(
Then, I thought that since there is something where if it is a sample that you need to divide the sum of squared differences by n-1 instead of n, I would have to change that. So I let x=the sum of squared differences and solved for x by squaring the standard deviation, then multiplying that by 10, and dividing that by 9 to get the sample variance. However, that didn't work as well :(
If someone could guide me through what I need to do, that would be great!
Thanks!
1 AnswerMathematics7 years agoWhat are some fun questions to ask a French foreign exchange student?
Tomorrow, a French foreign exchange student is visiting my French class and my teacher is making each student ask him at least one question. I'm having trouble coming up with some intelligent questions that are more interesting than "What is your favourite food?" If someone could give me a few ideas, that would be wonderful.

2 AnswersBooks & Authors7 years agoWhat would be an example of a witty comment for this situation?
I really like to crochet and when I crochet outside of my house, I always get at least a few people (usually people that I know pretty well and have a few classes with, but aren't VERY good friends with ) coming up to me, asking for a hat or a sweater in a joking manner. However, I can never come up with any witty comments to reply with. I usually just end up laughing and then go back to my crocheting. Can someone help me come up with something to say in these situations.
Thanks!
1 AnswerFriends7 years agoQuestion about physics about springs?
Here's the question:
It requires a force F to stretch a spring a distance x. In the process an energy U is stored in the spring. If the spring is stretched 2x what is the force required and the energy stored?
Here are the answer choices:
a. 1F and 2U
b. 4F and 4U
c. 2F and 2U
d. 4F and 8U
e. 2F and 4U
What I was thinking with this is that this question could be solved by using work, but I'm not really sure where to go with that. I also have no clue how to fit the internal energy into that as well. I am completely lost, so please explain!
Thanks so much guys!

2 AnswersHistory7 years agoA little help with sentence fluency?
Hi internet!
I'm writing a little paragraph for an assignment that my English teacher assigned me and we are being assessed on sentence fluency. My teacher really likes to have us use colons, semi-colons, dashes, and other advanced punctuation marks like that. I wrote a sentence and used a colon in it, but it sounds very awkwardly worded. Could someone help me word it better so that I can still use the colon and still essentially say the same thing.
Here's the sentence:
A peaceful scene was forming in the beginning and I didn’t want to create any pauses by using other such punctuation marks than a comma: dashes, semi-colons, or colons.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
2 AnswersWords & Wordplay7 years agoHelp with hyperbolas homework?
1. Find the oblique asymptotes of the hyperbola: (y-2)^2/4 - (x-1)^2/1 = 1
I know already that the answer is y=2x and y=-2x+4 but could someone explain HOW one would find that answer.
2. Find the oblique asymptotes of the hyperbola: (x-5)^2/25 - (y+1)^2/9 = 1
Again, I know the answer: y=(3/5)x-4 and y=(-3/5)x+2 but have no clue how to get those answers.
Please explain the process of doing this and it would really help if you could give a generalization using a,b, and c. Thanks! :3
1 AnswerHomework Help7 years agoDescribe a cute moment between a couple?
Ok, so I am writing this romance story between these two characters, Camryn and Drake, and I have finally come to the point where they are hanging out together and I know that something needs to happen between the two of them, but because of my utter lack of knowledge on this subject, I have absolutely no clue what should happen next. Any ideas?
1 AnswerSingles & Dating7 years agoWhere to add translations during a narrative?
Hey internet! So I've been editing a friend's story for her and have encountered a dilemma; she has a great part of her dialogue written in French since the character that she is writing about was in French class during that scene. Because of the large amount of speaking that the average reader wouldn't understand, she has included translations. Here's how she has been dealing with them so far:
“Ça va?” Gillian asked «What’s up? »
“Ughh…Gillian J’ai un problème.” I answered «I have a problem»
In this, the translations are located at the end of the sentence surrounded with the <<...>> marks. This seems like a very awkward place to put translations and I am wondering where would be a better place to put them. I was considering telling her to use footnotes, but it would take a very large amount of footnotes to get the job done. Are there any other ways to go about this?
5 AnswersBooks & Authors8 years agoShould I go to watch his guitar performance?
So there's this guy that I'm pretty sure likes me (walks me to class every day even though his is all the way across the school, can't seem to stop talking to me, apparently stands really close to me) and a while back, he said that I should come see him play his guitar at this showcase that my school puts on. I should be able to go to it, but my best friend can't come with me (she's the one who wants to hook me up with this guy). I'll find another friend to come with me, but I don't know if I should even go. Do you think that he would even really want me there? I'd honestly much rather sit at home in an antisocial cocoon of blankets and don't really want to go anyway. I'm considering just telling him (and my bestie) that I have a babysitting job and can't do it.
1 AnswerSingles & Dating8 years agoWhat would a guy say in this situation?
So I'm writing a book and I want to make it as real as possible but, as a girl who doesn't really socialize with guys, I'm having trouble writing for a guy character. Here's the situation:
The story takes place in a time period which is a mix between the Medieval/Arthurian times and Lord of the Rings. The main character has just found out that she is a Princess and is pretty much abducted to her country's castle by the guy. The girl is very mad at the guy for taking her and all she wants to do is to return home to her family, but the guy has made her promise that if she would stay for a little bit longer, he would return her home. The guy has made her put on a gorgeous dress so that she can go to meet her real parents, the King and Queen.
Now what I want to do is have the guy compliment the girl on how pretty she looks in the dress, but I don't know how a guy would go about saying that. Would he say it outright? Awkwardly? Try to subtly drop a hint? Or would a guy not even notice a thing like that?
BTW, the character is a very confident guy, like those who know that everyone else finds them attractive. He is also aware that he and the girl have been arranged to be married since before they were born.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
2 AnswersSingles & Dating8 years agoWhere is a good place to get a long pair of jeans?
All my life, I've only been able to find jeans that look more than capris than actual pants. My problem is that I'm taller and skinnier than average (5'8" and size 2). The jeans that I have been able to find that fit at my waist are way too short and those that are the perfect length are too big around the waist. The weather's getting cold now and I need a new pair of jeans. Are there any shops that you know of that sell jeans that would fit me? Nothing too fancy, just a straight-up pair of jeans.
6 AnswersFashion & Accessories8 years agoHow do I friend-zone a guy without saying it outright?
So there's this one guy at school and over the past month we've gotten to know each other pretty well. Every day, we walk from our first period class to our second period class and then from our second period class to my next class. Even though he's not in that one class. And his class is at the completely opposite side of the school. He hasn't dropped hints or anything that he likes me, but I'm pretty sure that he does, since he doesn't walk any of his other female friends to their next class. Only me. He's a really nice guy and everything, but I'm not sure that I'm ready for a relationship at this time and I don't want be put in the position where he asks me out because if he does, I don't think that I could say no. So how would be a good way to let him know that I'd rather be just friends with him? I'm looking for something subtle since I'm typically very shy and I don't want to say anything that would make our friendship awkward. Please help! I'm a socially awkward nerd who doesn't know how to act in a situation like this! :3
1 AnswerSingles & Dating8 years agoHelp with a polynomial problem?
I'm not sure how to solve this problem and I've been struggling with it for a while. I'm not really sure which approach I should take in solving it. Could someone point me in the right direction?
Consider the equation (x - h)^2 + (y - k)^2 = r^2. This equation represents a circle with radius r with center located at (h, k). Assume this circle intersects the parabola y = x^2 at exactly four points. It turns out that the sum of the x-coordinates of the four intersection points is always zero! Write an equation in the form P(x) = 0 that would allow you to find the four intersection points, but do not solve it. Explain why the sum of the x-coordinates of the four intersection points is zero.
1 AnswerMathematics8 years agoHelp me with a sequence problem!!?
I encountered this problem on my homework and am not sure what it is asking. Could someone please help me get started in the right direction?
Let a,b, and c be nonzero, consecutive terms in a geometric sequence, and a, 2b, and c are consecutive terms in an arithmetic sequence. Derive the result that the common ratio in the geometric sequence must be either 2+sqrt(3) or 2-sqrt(3).
1 AnswerMathematics8 years agoWhat are some good Harry Potter fanfictions?
I've been searching for a good Harry Potter fanfiction to read, but honestly, most of the stories on fanfiction.net are terrible. Any recommendations? Which ones have you enjoyed the most?
1 AnswerBooks & Authors8 years agoWhich book titles/covers catch your eye?
Last time that I was at the library, I noticed that as I was scanning the shelves for books, I was looking for certain fonts or colors on the books' spines. Depending on that, I would take a book off the shelf to read its back cover.
I am curious if other people also do that. What characteristics does a book cover need to have to catch your eye? Which genres of literature do you look for? Which keywords in a book's title make the story seem interesting?
