Caulking my baseboards to prevent bugs from getting in?
4 AnswersCleaning & Laundry5 years agoTrying to improve my casting distance?
I'm fishing a small river in Utah, using a 5'6" UL Berkley Cherrywood and a small Quantum spinning reel. I'm throwing a 1/4oz Vibrax spinner at the end of an 18-inch 4lb flurocarbon leader, which is attached to a swivel and then my main line. My main line is 4lb. mono.
On windy days my casting distance is horrible. I don't want to use a heavier lure since the fish are relatively small. I don't want to use a longer rod because the growth around the banks where I fish from is pretty heavy... 5'6" is already about max for my preferences in this situation.
Is there any way to improve casting distance? Is adding split shot to the line safe? Should I put it above the swivel or below it?

4 AnswersGoogle7 years agoSoft plastic sizing?
I'm getting more and more into jig fishing. I've been using soft plastic baits on jig heads in the river near my house. So far I have only ever gotten so much as a bite on the white colored curly-tail grubs.
After struggling with not being able to set the hook ever using jigs, I did a lot of research and discovered that I'm most likely using jigs that are far too large and far too heavy for the fish I'm targeting.
I'm looking at catching trout (rainbows, brooks, and browns mostly) that are rarely longer than 12" or 13", usually less. Probably average around 9". I'm using a 5'6" UL spinning setup.
The jigs I used in the past with little success were, I believe 1/8 oz and 1.5" soft plastics. I think I will have better luck using 1/32 oz jig heads, but I'm not sure what size of soft plastics to put on them. Does anyone have recommendations for what size/color/type of soft plastics to use for effective stream fishing?

1 AnswerFashion & Accessories7 years agoMy dry fly keeps sinking when fishing a fly & bubble rig?
I've been trying to use the fly & bubble rig at some mountain lakes.
Problem is, even when using a dry fly on a long leader of 4lb monofilament line, the fly only stays on the surface for a few seconds before getting wet and sinking. If I reel it in slowly I can keep it within an inch or two of the surface, but I never once got a bite - even when the fish were jumping for mosquitos off the surface like 5 feet away from shore.
Do I need to worry about the dry flies sinking a bit? If not... how can I keep them floating?
4 AnswersFishing7 years agoBest way to store monofilament line in a small tackle box?
I'm going on a lightweight fishing/backpacking/camping trip next week, and I'm putting together a small tackle box with only the bare minimums. I want to bring extra line (not enough to respool, just line for making leaders), and I wondered if there was a good way to take some line off the big spool and store it in a smaller container without messing it up or having issues with line memory/tangling/twisting.
Anyone have recommendations?
3 AnswersFishing7 years agoProblems while fishing a jig in the stream?
I just took my 5'6" ultralight pole down to the river and decided to try out some jig fishing. I was trying to catch brooks and rainbows. I used a 1/8 oz jig with a white curly tail soft plastic grub.
Got a bite on my first cast. Seems like drifting the jig downstream a ways and then retrieving with some "wounded minnow" action would get bites pretty consistently.
I was never able to set the hook once. Seems like the fish would hold the jig, sometimes even for several seconds, but inevitably get off. The jigs had barbs because I was hoping to catch dinner. And I could have sworn I had them on the line a few times. But they always got off. I don't know if I was just never hooking up or if I was tearing the hooks out of their mouths, or what.
Anyone have tips on how to actually land the fish after it bites on a jig?
5 AnswersFishing7 years agoRecommendations for fishing a fly/bubble rig?
I want to try a fly and bubble rig with my spinning rod. I have found a million tutorials on how to rig it. It's very simple, so no worries there. However, how do you fish with it? Cast out and leave it? Cast and retrieve? How fast? Will the bubble moving through the water scare away the fish? Would I fish a wet fly differently than a dry fly?
2 AnswersFishing7 years agoLooking to replace my 5' ultralight Quantum rod?
I just got out my 5' ultralight Quantum spinning rod to take stream fishing. Several years ago, I broke the tip off, so the rod is probably weighing in around 4'6" now. The problem isn't really the length so much as the loss of sensitivity. I did manage to hook a 10" brook trout on a Panther Martin with it today, but I could BARELY feel the bite. This is on a a spinner that I was steadily reeling in anyway. I have also noticed that the casting distance for lightweight lures has suffered; I could barely get my 1/32 oz Joe's spinner more than 15 feet out, and that's with a split shot on the 4 lb. test mono line.
I'm very happy with the reel, just looking to replace the rod as it has been discontinued by Quantum.
I don't want to spend buckets of cash. Something in the 4'6" or 5' range, definitely ultralight action. Probably not longer than 5'. I have a longer Eagle Claw rod for when I want something longer. If possible, I want to keep it under $20.
I looked around a bit and this is looking like maybe the best bang for my buck:

Anyone have anything to say about the 5' version of that rod? Or have any recommendations?
2 AnswersFishing7 years agoRecommended rigs for small trout stream fishing?
I got my shorter ultralight spinning rod and reel out of deep storage the other day and I want to take it onto the river.
To get started I want to try both bait and spinner fishing from shore. I'm using 4 lb. mono line. Expecting to catch rainbows and brookies in the 12" range.
If I want to use a powerbait worm with gang hooks, what kind of rig should I use (specifically what kind of weight?) Should I be trying to sink the worm to the bottom or let it float?
What about salmon eggs?
And as far as lure fishing goes, I picked up a modest selection of small spinners (1/16 oz) and a spoon that is slightly heavier (I think 3/16?). What is the best way to rig up and fish these?
I'm fairly comfortable with lake fishing, especially with a Carolina rig, but I'm basically a noob with stream fishing. Tips? Thanks everyone.
2 AnswersFishing7 years agoAdvice for picking the right rod?
Hey all—
I'm looking to get a rod that will be used exclusively for lake fishing from shore. I have a reel that I'm happy with, so just looking at rods for the time being.
I catch mostly smallish pan-sized trout in the neighborhood of 10"-12" where I fish usually, so I'm almost always using 4 or 6 lb. test mono line.
My main complaint with my current rod is that it doesn't cast lightweight spinners (the size and type I would expect to catch smallish trout with) very far or very well. I can't even get a 1/16 spinner to the center of a pond without loading it up with split shot and causing it to sink deeper than I wanted to go.
So from what I understand... I'm probably looking for an Ultralight or Light rod in the 6'6" or 7' range, yeah? Correct me if I'm wrong. Does anyone have recommendations?
My budget is in the <$50 range.
3 AnswersFishing7 years agoCasting spinners for trout?
Hey guys— noob fisherman question coming up.
I've been doing some trout fishing in a lake and having a lot of success with a regular Carolina rig and powerbait. I can go in the middle of the day when the trout are at the bottom of the lake to stay cool, throw out a big sinker with a 18-20" leader and get a hit almost every time; catching smallish rainbows.
As the day goes on and the sun starts to set, the trout tend to get closer to the surface and start feeding on bugs and jumping a lot. The still rig suddenly gets MUCH less effective.
I want to try some spinners that are made to stay near the surface when the fish start moving up towards the surface of the lake, but I'm having difficulty casting them far enough out. Heavier lures tend to be too big for the fish in the lake (it's more like a pond, really). Lighter lures don't give me much casting distance. I'm using 6 lb. monofilament, definitely don't want to go any heavier for these fish. I know upgrading to a longer rod is one solution, but it's not in the budget right now.
Also, out of curiosity, is there a rig that would sink a smallish rooster tail down near the bottom of the lake for fishing when the sun it still out? If I get bored of bait fishing I think it could be interesting to try a spinner down deeper in the water while the fish are still down there.
4 AnswersFishing7 years agoQuestion about leader length?
I've been reading up on a lot of different rigs for trout fishing. Today I read about a rig called the bubble and fly that allows me to fish for trout using dry and wet flies but without requiring a fly rod.
The rig calls for a 6 foot leader. I have never fished with anything longer than about 20 inches for a leader, using a still bottom rig with floating powerbait.
How could I cast with a 6 foot leader? Wouldn't it be sitting on the ground as I tried to cast? Not to mention getting snagged on everything in a 12-foot radius...
1 AnswerFishing7 years agoCSS drop-down menu not functioning at all?
Hello everyone—
I have been trying to put together a simple CSS drop-down menu. I have the basic HTML and CSS in place, but upon mousing over, nothing happens at all.
I am using live preview in Brackets (which runs through Google Chrome). I tested some other basic :hover functions like link color and they worked perfectly; I just can't seem to get the :hover selector to change the display from "none" to "block" when I hover over the link in question.
Here is my CSS:
#navigation1 {
list-style: none;
}
li.nav1 {
float: left;
padding-left: 5px;
padding-right: 5px;
}
#navigation2 {
display: none;
}
#navigation2:hover {
display: block;
}
li.nav2:hover {
display: block;
}
---------------------------------------And here is my HTML:
<ul id="navigation1">
<li class="nav1"><a href="">Link1</a></li>
<li class="nav1"><a href="">Link2</a></li>
<li class="nav1"><a href="">Link3</a>
<ul id="navigation2">
<li class="nav2"><a href="">Link3a</a></li>
<li class="nav2"><a href="">Link3b</a></li>
<li class="nav2"><a href="">Link3c</a></li>
<li class="nav2"><a href="">Link3d</a></li>
<li class="nav2"><a href="">Link3e</a></li>
</ul>
<li class="nav1"><a href="">Link4</a></li>
<li class="nav1"><a href="">Link5</a></li>
</ul>
4 AnswersProgramming & Design7 years agoIssues with my enlarger?
I have a Beseler enlarger that I have used for several years without problems. I have a 50mm El Nikkor lens for 35mm film and an 80mm El Nikkor lens for 6x7 film.
Today I wanted to print an 11x14 from a 35mm frame. I set everything up and found that my 50mm lens couldn't get the image to focus at 11x14. I twist the focus knob and the lens moves up and the image gets sharper until... it stops moving because it runs out of track and the image still isn't clear. Even setting to f/16 won't make it clear enough to get a decent print.
I did some tests and it turns out I can't even get it to focus when printing an 8x10. The largest image size I can use before the lens will not achieve proper focus is about 5x7.
Has anyone ever experienced a problem like this before?
2 AnswersPhotography7 years agoBest format and codec to use in my situation?
I want to send my friend an SD card with videos I took on my iPhone. Unfortunately, he doesn't have access to a computer at all right now, which means he needs to watch the videos on his point & shoot camera. I don't know exactly what model or brand, but it's one of those really basic $100 ones. It shoots video, but it doesn't shoot HD video or anything, only 480p.
I'm going to put the iPhone videos into Premiere Pro and I want to export them to the right file extension and codec for a regular point & shoot camera to read them. What is your best guess here?
2 AnswersCamcorders7 years agoQuestion about Excel formulas?
I am trying to make a cash flow projection sheet for my finances.
I have a formula that calculates my balance by doing the adding and subtracting from various columns ("to savings," "cash in," "cash out," etc). Everything was working great until I decided to add a box on the side where I can plug in a number to see if it makes my balance go red (basically a box where I can check if I can afford something without causing problems for myself down the road).
I added that box into the formula, and used the fill bar to fill it down to project out to 2015. Unfortunately, the cell underneath the original replaced the cell containing the new "can I afford this" box with the cell underneath it in the formula.
Basically, I want the formula to follow the "cash in/cash out/to savings" cells down the column as it already does, but I want the formula to LOCK onto the one extra cell to the side so it remains constant throughout each formula. Does anybody know how to do that?
1 AnswerPersonal Finance7 years agoI left a pan on the stove and it basically turned black. Is it still safe to use?
I was boiling water in a small saucepan on my electric stove, and forgot about it for like an hour. When I got back to it, it was completely try, VERY hot (almost burned my hand on the handle part of it), and the inside had kind of a gritty black/tan stuff going on. I let it cool down in the air until I could touch it, and then ran it under cold water. I washed it out with dish soap and steel wool, but the bottom isn't shiny aluminum anymore, it's kind of a black, matte surface. It doesn't leave black on my finger when I touch it though...
The pan was NOT teflon coated. It is made of aluminum. Can I still use it for cooking normally or will it contaminate my food or make it taste weird?
