  • Solving transcendental functions?

    I have an equation

    .05exp(x) = x + 1

Is it reasonable to differentiate each side with respect to x and then solve for x, i.e.

    d/dx [0.05exp(x) = x + 1] => 0.05exp(x) = 1 => x = 3

Just a thought. What do you think?

  • Vector Calculus Help?

    I have two questions.

    1. A fighter plane which can only shoot bullets straight ahead travels along the path

    r(t) = < 5 - t, 21 - (t^2), 3 - (t^3)/27>

Show that there is precisely one time t at which the pilot can hit a target located at the origin.

    2. Use the parameterization r = <rcosθ, rsinθ> to show that a curve r in polar coordinates has curvature:

    r(θ) = | (r^2) + 2(r')^2 - r(r'')| / [( (r^2) + (r')^2 )^(3/2)]

  • Equation in rectangular coordinates of the quadric surface consisting of the two cones φ = π /4 and Φ = 3π/4?

What is the equation in rectangular coordinates of the quadric surface consisting of the two cones φ = π /4 and Φ = 3π/4 ?

I know it involves converting from spherical coordinates, but I have no idea how to form an equation out of these two cones. Any idea?

  • Question about illegal software?

I was in the math building at my campus today, and I heard someone talking about how they obtained Mathematica by less than legal means. He said they had no way of finding out that he had an illegal copy of the software...but I would tend to disagree. Surely they know who is using their software. Should I report him?

Also, do you think he is right? Would they really not be able to track him down?

  • Determine whether the series converges or diverges?

    We have the series (2^k)k! / (k+2)! from k = 1 to Inf.

I realize the method is to rewrite the factorials in such a way that the expression becomes more simple and can then have a test ran on it, but I was not taught how to do this and I cannot find a simple explanation for it online.

Thanks. I don't need anyone to do any convergence tests, just showing me how to simplify the expression would be nice.

  • I heard Justin Bieber died this morning?

My friend told me that the local news ran a story on Justin Bieber this morning. Apparently there was some kind of plane accident. I really hope this isn't true...RIP Justin.

  • Mathematica Help, Trying to Find Volume of Solid Revolved About An Axis?

    f[x] = (8a^3)/(x² + 4a²)

I need to find the volume of the Witch of Agnesi curve revolved about the x-axis from (-Infinity,Infinity) using an improper integral within Mathematica. I tried using the formulas for a disc and cylindrical shells to no avail. Can anyone help me with the formula for it and perhaps the code in Mathematica for it?

  • Question about center of mass, physics?

At one instant, the center of mass of a system of two particles is located on the x-axis at x = 2.0 m and has a velocity of 5 m/s. One of the particles is at the origin. The other particle has a mass of 0.10 kg and is at rest on the x-axis at x = 8.0 m.

What is the mass of the particle at the origin?

Calculate the total momentum of this system.

What is the velocity of the particle at the origin?

I don't have any idea how to solve this problem. Can anyone please help?

  • Unable to mount an image?

I have several ISO files I need to mount for a computer game, and I have tried both Daemon Tools Lite and Virtual CloneDrive and both behave the same in that I click "Mount Image" and nothing happens.

I fear the files may be corrupted, however these are the only files I have to work with, and am not able to obtain them elsewhere. Is there some software I can use to fix the ISO files or is there an image mounting program that would somehow work where the others have failed?

    Please help, thanks.

  • Physics Help Please, Friction?

You are called as an expert witness in the trial of a traffic violation. The facts are these: A driver slammed on his brakes and came to a stop with constant acceleration. Measurements of his tires and the skid marks on the pavement indicate that he locked his car's wheels, the car traveled 192 ft before stopping, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the road and his tires was 0.750. The charge is that he was speeding in a 45 mi/h zone. He pleads innocent.

    A) Is he guilty or innocent?

    B) What was his velocity before he hit the brakes?

  • Question about velocity/position vectors?

    A bird flies in the xy-plane with a velocity vector given by v = i(2.4 - 1.6t^2)+ 4tj.

The positive y-direction is vertically upward. At t = 0 the bird is at the origin.

What is the bird's altitude (y-coordinate) as it flies over x = 0 for the first time after t = 0?

According to my book, the y-component of velocity is equal to dy/dt. If my calculations are correct, y = t*v_y

I set t equal to zero, but obviously that gave me an answer of zero. How do I do this problem? My book shows no examples similar to this.

  • Crossing a River (Vectors Question)?

A river flows due south with a speed of 2.0 m/s. A man steers a motorboat across the river. The river is 800 m wide.

In which direction should the motorboat head in order to reach a point on the opposite bank directly east from the starting point? (The boat's speed relative to the water is 4.2 m/s)

What is the velocity of the boat relative to the earth?

How much time is required to cross the river?
