  • Will my ear piercing close up?

Probably a stupid question. I've had my ear pierced for about six years; last night, I lost my only earring. Should I go buy a new one asap, or can I afford to wait a week or so?

  • Thinking about getting my nose pierced?

I'd like to get my nose pierced, but I've noticed that not many men have nose piercings. Is that a thing, like, "men shouldn't get their nose pierced?"

Also, does the nostril matter? Is there a thing, like "right ear = gay?"

    Thank you!

Does anyone know the source of this photo? (I found it on a third-party website)

Is it actually Pynchon? When was this taken?

  • Tailoring costs: blazers/suit jackets?

I'm looking to get a few blazers tailored. I'm not exactly sure what this would entail, I just want them to fit better. How much would I expect to pay?

I know this is very vague, but I'm just looking for some approximate figures. Thank you!

  • Young adult book series? Can't remember the name?

Ok, this is an older series, maybe written in the 70s. Pretty long series – at least a dozen books, probably. Geared towards young adults, mostly younger teenage boys. I think the protagonists were brothers, and they were either the children or grandchildren of the President or Vice President.

It's a cross between mystery and adventure, with occasional supernatural elements. In the first book, their plane is shot down over Death Valley. In one book they meet the Yeti, in another there're UFOs.

I used to love these books, and I totally can't remember any of the names! Help!

  • Is this an apt summary of Maxwell's Demon/the Second Law?

Note that I am not a physics student and this is not for a physics class – it's for English, and I only need a basic working definition:

"Maxwell's Demon is part of a thought experiment which shows a hypothetical violation of the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This law states that "the entropy of a closed system can only increase" (OED) – in other words, any "system," be it a house party or the whole universe, must become increasingly disorderly until it reaches a state of equilibrium and simply "stops."

The Maxwell's Demon thought experiment hypothetically violates this law. A "demon" sits in between two rooms which hot and cold particles are bouncing between, becoming more disorderly and eventually reaching a state of equilibrium. The demon, however, opens and closes a door between these rooms, keeping the hot and cold particles separate and thus decreasing the entropy of this system in violation of the Second Law."

    Thank you!

  • Driving in LA in the midmorning?

What's it like to drive from the outskirts of Los Angeles to downtown in the midmorning, around 10am? How bad is the traffic? In the summer, what's the weather like? How long does it take? What does the air smell like?

  • Naif/naive – definition?

Is there a difference in definition between the two words, or are they just different spellings?

  • Hinduism/Bhagavad-gita?

I'm confused about Hinduism. Is it monotheistic, as the Bhagavad-gita seems to say (Lord Krishna is the one true God); or are there hundreds of gods, as in popular depiction?

  • Relationship between college major/cigarette smoking?

It seems that smoking rates are higher amongst humanities students – English, Sociology, History, etc; and very low in the "practical" majors – Nursing, Engineering, Business.

Has anyone else noticed this? Have you noticed one specific major that seems to have the most smokers?

  • Derrida - "ptionetic?"?

Can anyone define "ptionetic" for me? From Derrida's Diffèrance:

"The pyramidal silence of the graphic difference between the e and the a can function, of course, only within the system of ptionetic writing, and within the language and grammar which is as historically linked to ptionetic writing as it is to the entire culture inseparable from phonetic writing."

    Thank you!

  • Tattoo on top of my hand?

I'm thinking about getting a tattoo on the top of my hand, and I have a few questions:

-How much would this http://tinyurl.com/7gp2klh design cost; maybe an inch long and in B&W?

-Is it true that many artists refuse to tattoo hands?

-Is it true that hand tattoos fade/mess up quicky?

  • Sylvia Plath – "Caryatids?"?

Ted Hughes made a few cryptic references to the first Sylvia Plath poem he read, something about caryatids. I can't seem to find the name of the poem anywhere. Can anyone help, or has it been lost?

  • 'Her hair is coarser...' c/c?

Open to any and all criticism and suggestions.

    "Her hair is coarser,

But she is so much warmer.

    I hallucinate,

But she is more real than you.

    She is smirks, tobacco breath:

    More like me than you.

    You were my shadow;

    She is my very reflection."

    Thank you!

  • Title of an Auden poem?

Does anyone know the title of "That night when joy began?" I know it has a title, but it's always referred to by the first line. Thank you!

    "That night when joy began

    Our narrowest veins to flush,

    We waited for the flash

    Of morning's levelled gun.

    But morning let us pass,

    And day by day relief

    Outgrows his nervous laugh,

    Grown credulous of peace,

As mile by mile is seen

    No trespasser's reproach,

    And love's best glasses reach

No fields but are his own."

  • Trying to remember the name of a Giorgio de Chirico painting...?

...it was not a particularly surrealistic painting. Two people, one of them sitting. Kind of Greek looking. Sylvia Plath mentioned being influenced by it. Thank you!
