He’s OBVIOUSLY a synthetic cellulose kitchen sponge…! I mean, come on! He’s rectangular and all! Natural sponges don’t come in that shape. That’s why he’s so strange and why he doesn’t seem to fit in quite right there in Bikini Bottom – not because he’s homo or anything like that, they way people keep on saying!

They just haven’t show his origin story yet, where he gets sucked down the drain of the kitchen sink and winds up on the ocean floor -- kind of like Finding Nemo, only in reverse. Where did you think Pixar got the idea?

According to his background story he would seem to be a natural sponge, but the way he is shaped he looks synthetic. All natural sponges that I have seen have rounded edges and corners and are all shaped a little different, not so rectangular.

He is adopted. He fell of the small island above Bikini Bottom after a shipwrecked dishwasher was rescued. His parents found him much like the Kent's and soon adopted him. His synthetic nature is what makes him so distinct from the other creatures around him.

He looks synthetic. i don't think natural sponges have a 90 deg flat top and butt.
