In Italian Indio means Indian but it has also a different meaning. We call Indio any native people that lived in the Americas (the whole American continent i.e. North, Centre and South America) prior of the colonization by Europeans
L' Indio or gli Indios are the red skinned peoples from South of the USA, Central and South America. They can be Hopis, Paiutes, Pueblos, Navajos, Yaquis, then Incas, Aztecs, Mapuches, Yanomanos, Amazonian peoples. Instead the Indiani or Pellerossa (Red skin) are all other Aboriginal and native peoples from the North Canada to the quiet South of USA, like: Kwakiutl, Cree, Choctaw, Inuit, Winnebago, Huron, Algonquin, Mohegan, Crow, Blackfoot, Sioux, Iroquois, Dakota, Lakota, Apache, Arapaho, Chippewa, Seminole, etc., etc., etc. Ciao.
