While picking up several poop piles, I noticed for the first time that one pile had squirmy worms in it. I have seen worms in my cats and these were different: bigger, ridged, and wiggly. How do I know if these are just CSI Grissom's decomp worms or if my dog is sick? I do give her Heartguard.

Heartguard protects against heartworms which are only found in the heart. Seeing as your dog is producing them in stool, they're probably in the digestive tract.

Heartguard does not prevent most intestinal worms, thats why its called HEARTguard. I would take a fresh fecal sample to your vet and have it tested. They can easily see any parasites in the feces. Then, if there is a problem they will prescribe you some meds to kill those pesky parasites.

Were they small like rice, and alive, if so might be tape worms and you will see them in fresh feces. These are the only living worms that I know of that "come out" alive.
Round worms usually are not in feces until they die and hook worms are microscopic.
