Laws do not need to be renewed. It is the law of the land and it is active and current.
However, see below.
"The five-day waiting period for handgun purchases expired on November 30, 1998 and was replaced by a computerized criminal background check prior to any firearm purchase from a dealer holding a Federal Firearms License (FFL). All dealers, manufacturers and importers must verify the identity of a non-FFL customer and receive authorization from the National Instant Check System (NICS) which often takes only minutes instead of the several-day waiting period."

The "Brady Bill" (gun registration database, increased waiting period, limits on felons from any state even if they cross state lines) is still in effect.
HOWEVER, the bill is a major failure in one sense. It did not include funding, and a Supreme Court case from some years ago held that failure to enforce unfunded mandates cannot be held against those who haven't the ability to comply with those mandates. The Brady Bill falls into that category right now.

Part of it was stricken down as being unconstitutional (the part that penalized law enforcement officers for not performing background checks). The new Orwellian NICS instant background check system run by the FBI has made that a moot issue.
So, 98% of the Brady Bill is still with us.
