What is the best first sentence to use when writing a cover letter. I am applying for a promotion with my current company. I hate to open with "I am writing regarding the xyz position..", I'd prefer something a little more unique and something that draws the letter reader in. What have you used in your letter? For managers, what is the most appealing opening to a cover letter (especially if it was someone applying for a promotion)?

This letter is regarding the xyz promotion and why you should give me a chance to help make a difference and guarentee success for myself and this business.
Let me, help you in taking this business to a whole new plateau of success!
its shows confidence in yourself and your knowledge of your job!
Umm....I wouldn't go for the "Let me help you do that with your business" because it sounds like "your way of doing things up to now sucked, I'm better than you, I'm coming to save you". A professional way would be to write a targeted cover letter, starting it the way poster number two, even number one, with a little twist. Here's why you should use a targeted cover letter:
Someone once told me that, instead of looking for a generic position, one of the best things you can do is describe a job you're looking for....
For example, instead of saying, "I'm looking for a PR position with your company" You might instead specify: "I'm seeking a career that challenges my abilities, and allows me to use my customer service skills on a daily basis."
Using the job description as points that you're looking for in a job looks much more positive, and shows that you've done your research.
Using the word 'career' instead of 'position' indicates that you'd be more inclined to a long-term position within the company.
