Only PS3 games are region free. PS1/2 games have regions:
PAL - Europe, India, Australia, etc;
NTSC J - Japan, etc;
NTSC U/C - North America;
NTSC C - China.

Your console's region is on the sticker at the back or the bottom of PS3. If you put in PS1/2 game from the different region - it won't play it.

If the PS-2 game was obtained from another region, such as North America, and your PS-3 was obtained within India, then this is why.

Aside from possible differences in video standard, there are also territorial restrictions programmed into PlayStation software to prevent a game from one region from being played in another region.

The region label are both on the disc and the disc packaging. For example, North American PS-2 software will be labeled "NTSC / U/C."

An Indian PS-3 will be labeled "PAL" or "PAL / E."

The same label (NTSC / U/C) must be on the product label (the label where the model and serial numbers are printed on) on the PS-3 to signify that it is authorized to play North American PlayStation software.

it depends where you bought your ps3 from. If your ps3 is ntsc (i.e. America), then you can only play ntsc games. If your ps3 is pal (i.e. Australia), then you can only play pal games.

ps3 80gb supports about 80% of the ps2 games
ps3 60gb supports about 40% of it...
