Is it stupid to buy a 40 GB PlayStation 3 out now?
Would you buy the 40GB, if you were using it for just Blu-ray and games? I know there is a 120 GB version coming soon - probably with MGS, but when? I also think it would be $499 at least, not $399. I also could care less about the "rumble" feature, and I doubt they will ever have PS2 compatibility in further models. Am I wrong? I have been a XBOX 360 guy, but got screwed on the whole HD DVD thing. Should I suck it up an d wait, or would the 40 GB be fine for my needs?

The 60 GB PS3's are going for $700 and up. Plus they are almost impossible to find.

Hello, people, the 20, 60 and 80 GB versions are no longer produced or available. While it is possible to find them USED, it is usually at a great premium. The rumble feature will be coming soon to the PS3 - SONY was in a lawsuit. I would definitely pay a $100 more for an 80 GB drive and a game, but that is not an option.
The options are:
1. Buy a 40 GB PS3 - will never work w/ PS2 games. I can always put a larger HD in, if I want/need to.
2. Wait to buy the MGS package, which will have rumble, and may or may not be compatible with SOME PS2 games, and wait at least 3 months, possibly longer if they don't make enough.
3. Pay a ridiculous amount of money for a 60 GB PS3 now, which has the EE and is about 90% compatible with PS2 games.
That is why I am asking if it is a stupid idea to buy a PS3 now, bearing in mind what I will be using it for.

Wait until the 80GB PS3 with Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Dualshock 3 controller comes out June 12th. There is not going to be a 120GB PS3, those were just rumors.
If you are going to get a PS3, I already know that you aren't going to be using it for just Blu-Ray. I mean come on, you aren't going to pay $500 dollars for the 80GB PS3 just to play Blu-Ray DVD when you can buy a stand alone Blu-Ray player for $399 (the cheapest stand-alone Blu-Ray player avaliable). It's O.k. to admit that you are going to be gaming on the PS3 as well even if you are a Xbox 360 guy because you will be gaming on the PS3, I mean, who can resist to play Metal Gear Solid 4, Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 and Haze on the PS3 when they have a PS3..... Nobody.
The PS3 is actually the best Blu-Ray player to buy because the Blu-Ray compatibility is upgradable via Firmware Updates. As a matter of fact, later this month the PS3 is getting another Blu-Ray update, the first Blu-Ray update for the PS3 was released in December last year.
Wait until the new 80GB PS3 bundle with MGS4 comes out in June and buy it then.
well there is a 80gb MGS4 bundle with the rumble controller coming in june 12th, if you don't care about Ps2 games then get the 40gb, that MGS4 bundle will cost $499 while the 40gb is $399. The MGS4 bundle has the 80gb version which uses software emulation for the Ps2 games, if you just want Ps3 and Blu ray get the 40gb (side note the ps3 uses standard 2.5 laptop harddrives so if you needed a bigger harddrive you could spend $100 on a 250gb one, so don't let the size of the HDD take you away from the 40gb)
what are you talking about? nowadays (at least in canada and i think us) pse 80 gb is $500, ps3 40 is $399 and is VERY useful for people who dont need to play ps2 games. also, why would you look for 60 gb? it is basically in between the 40 and the 80, because unlike 40 it has ps2 playable, but 80 can play a larger range of ps2 games.
the only diff between 40 and 80 is that 40 will NEVER be able to play ps2 games, 40 has 2 usb ports, while 80 has 4, (not much of a problem unless u will have like a fan and camera attached but they can also be detached to recharge your controllers. and thats about it
80 has 4 usbs, twice the memory, comes with motorstorm ($70 in stores, about $40 used in EB games).
what do you mean by rumble feature? do you mean if the controllers have vibrate? because both 40 and 80 come with wireless, but also vibrate-less controllers, the ones with vibrate cost like $60.
Easiest way is to look at the trim (runs top to bottom and is the opening to the disk drive) if it is solid black it is a 20gb. if it is painted gray then it's a 40gb and if it's shiney silver (like a mirror) then its a 60 or 80 both are the best.
