I am going to buy a new comforter, and was looking into a new down one. My old one has gotten flat in some parts of it, and its getting colder, so I want a good one. When looking at them it talks about the thread count. What exactly does thread count mean? Will one with a higher thread count be better constructed and last longer than one with a lower thread count? I am shopping online for one, so I want to be sure to buy the best one I can get for the money I am looking to spend.

Thread count is the number of threads contained in one square inch of fabric, including both the length (warp) and width (weft) threads. A higher thread count in usually softer and more dense. I suggest getting the highest thread count you can afford. Also, with down comforters, there are other details to consider. The 'down' could be feathers, down, or synthetic. The stitching of the comforter makes a difference also; you don't want the down to settle is one end so the number/type of 'sections' sewn into the comforter can be important.

There's usually two different numbers with a down comforter, a thread count and fill amount. If you want a fluffier one, get one with a large fill amount...but getting a high thread count is a great idea too - I've experienced a problem with two down comforters in the past, after washing they start to thin out and little tears can form and feathers and fibers begin to come out....if you get a higher thread count, it should be more tightly woven and less likely to let as many feathers out. I got mine at Target for about $100, they also should have good sales right now at Target, Walmart, Linens N' Things and Bed Bath and Beyond for down comforters since winter is over and spring is beginning.

The higher thread count will prevent the feather to "get" out the comforter, Also, you want the one is sewed in pockets, not one big piece. If you got to some high end store, then you can compare the difference, also, it depends on how warm you want to get, because they are also by weight. The heavier, the comforter is more stuffed, and it keeps you more warm. Usually, I have two comforter, one is light weight for summer, one is heavier for winter.
