What are the best fuel-efficient vehicles on the market right now?

We're thinking about buying a new car and want to hear what your recent experiences have been, both good and bad. Also, we live in an area with hard, snowy winters and we'd like to know what kind of driving experiences you've had on wintry roads.

Official fuel efficiency ratings by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/bestworst.shtml

If you live somewhere where there is snow for a significant part of the year, then you might have to take the fuel economy hit and get something capable of 4-wheel-drive.

Toyota Prius
Toyota Yaris
Toyota Camry Hybrid
Honda Civic

Did you know a VW lupo diesel can get 70mpg but they're not in the U.S.

Hybrids don't have a lot of HP so I wouldn't go off road at all even if it's a non hybrid because these cars have front wheel drive only. I live in S.F., California so it's never snows.

well, something like a ford escape will give you great mpg if you want to feel safe in the winter in something bigger. or if you want a car, the ford focus is great on gas as well and i've heard from a friend that they had one as a rental when they were on vacation and said it was SO fun to drive. both of those cars are front wheel and the escape has an optional all wheel. both are also american cars, so if you wan't to help the US economy, then buy from a company that builds and operates in america.
