Where could the smell of raw gas be coming from in a 2000 Taurus?

When my mom drives her 2000 Taurus (3.0 L 24 valve V6), you can smell raw gasoline from inside the car. The smell isn't constant. It is mainly noticeable when you first start the car, and for a couple of minutes after you start driving. Sometimes you can smell gas during acceleration, even after you have been driving for a while. Does anyone have an idea of what could be causing the smell?

My mom knows that she needs to take the car to a mechanic. She asked me to post this question just to get some ideas.

There might be a leak in the fuel line that leads to the gas tank, also did you fill your tank up to the rim, were gas can leak out as you drive that could also cause be a problem of why you're smelling gas.

Hope I helped !!!

Most likely, fuel pressure regulator. First, power wash engine bay. Also, locate and clean the idle air control valve. If you have been using bad fuel for any length of time, the diaphragm in the FPR will break or leak and cause excess fuel pressure. Also possible that a fuel hose under the hood was improperly made at factory. Clean engine, leave hood open, watch for signs of moisture anywhere. Good Luck!!!

I doubt that it's a leak because she would notice that with the fuel intake. I am almost 100% positive that it's the fuel filter. Since you are only smelling it when she first starts it and a couple minutes into the drive, it's the left over fuel that didn't burn off in the filter itself.

small leak in the fuel line near the top of the engine is the most likely culprit
