We hear about wedding, baby shower, bridal shower gift registries. Would it be appropriate to have a birthday gift registry for a 30th birthday celebration event? What do most people think? Would you do it?

Just because people have registries for all of these events doesn't mean it is appropriate.
Generally by the time one is 30 celebrating a birthday is more a way to get together with friends, not a way to get presents.

If one is getting married or having a baby for the first time, the gift registry is to get the couple/expectant parents gifts they do not have and to help them set up. Never would i consider a gift registry for any birthday, they come about every year. And just because you want something, doesn't mean you should expect it. A gift is a gift is a gift. If someone wants to give you a gift for your birthday, then they'll either ask you or someone close to you for an idea. It might not be an expensive item, just a little something to show they are thinking of you. But to expect gifts for your birthday when you're an adult is a bit childish. Even a surprise party shouldn't leave you expecting gifts. They're just added to a great occasion for your friends to come together and celebrate your birthday. Look at it this way, would you like it if any of your friends called you and said "i want this for my birthday" and I expect you to get it for me. Where's the surprise or the fun in that? Sorta defeats the purpose.

Just because the stores have a registry for almost everything, doesn't mean they are appropriate.
After a certain age (10 years old) birthday gatherings should be more about enjoying your friends as opposed to thinking about the gifts you will get.

It's inappropriate and tacky. Registries are to coordinate for a very special one-time event so a couple doesn't get 27 toasters and no plates. Gifts would not normally be expected for a 30 year old's birthday.
