the movie was called "Always" (1989) with Richard Dreyfus and Holly Hunter; John Goodman and Brad Johnson were also in it.
and it was a remake of an older movie from 1943, A Man called Joe, with Spencer Tracy, Irene Dunne and Van Johnson
