The very first .30-30 I ever owned was a Winchester model 94. I thought I had bought a what was easily the most classic lever action anybody could buy. Marlin's, I thought, just weren't as stylish. True, it has aesthetic qualities that no gun maker has ever been able to duplicate, but this rifle in particular was about as accurate as a Brown Bess musket of long ago. I took the rifle to the range and set up a target on a large piece of cardboard. at 100 yards. With a box of ammunition, I fired a few shots at the bullseye, went down to check to see where the bullets were striking. I repeated this method--adjusting the sites every time--and after twenty rounds, NOT ONE SHOT had passed through the 2 ft. by 2 ft. piece of cardboard, much the target--NO MATTER HOW I ADJUSTED THE SIGHTS. The rifle was taken to a gun store a few days later and traded in on a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington. To this day it is the only brand of lever action rifle I will consider purchasing.
