If you had to cut a BIG government program to help balance the budget, what would you cut?

My first preference is to eliminate the Department of Education but I'm interested in other cuts.

"In fiscal 2011 the Department of Health and Human Services will spend $909.7 billion."

$909.7 billion!!! That's almost $1 Trillion!!!

Remember this fact, the next time some ninny tries to tell you that we can't eliminate the budget deficit and start paying down the national debt without cutting entitlements such as medicare, medicaid, and social security.

The Department of Human Services ought to be severed from the Department of Health, and eliminated. As for the Department of Health, every dime it spends ought to be scrutinized. Surely there is plenty of fat that can be trimmed here.

An this is just one department! What about all the others? Stop Federal funding of abortions through Medicaid. In fact, eliminate Medicaid altogether. Eliminate funding for the Public Broadcasting System, National Public Radio, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the United Nations, the Violence Against Women Act. Cut pay for government workers, from the President, all the way down to the bottom of the food chain - every last one of them. Then freeze their pay. Eliminate all foreign aid.

The above mentioned suggestions are just for starters. All discretionary spending ought to be cut or eliminated entirely before entitlement programs are touched.

Over the next 5 years I would cut:

The welfare budget by 40%
The defense budget by 30%
Medicare and Medicaid budget by 15%
Social Security by 10%
The Department of Education budget by 50%

I would also completely eliminate the DEA and cut the Federal war on drugs budget by 90%.
