I have a 2003 Subaru Imrezza with 150,000 miles with a manual transmission. When the engine is at 2,900 RPM and I step on the accelerator, the RPMs shoot up to 3,900 and then back down to 3,000 before I start accelerating. No burst of speed or anything, just a burst of RPMs at about 2,900. I am planning on taking her into a transmission shop next week, but wanted to guess what the mechanic will tell me.

It doesn't sound like anything at all is wrong with your transmission. You need to replace your clutch, the throw out bearing and replace the Pressure Plate with a new or rebuilt one also. You don't want to pay someone to just replace your clutch and then not change the pressure plate and bearing. Your car is 8 years old, if you only change the clutch you will be paying someone else to tear it down again to change what you didn't replace long before your new clutch wears out. Also while it's torn apart check the flywheel for heat damage or see if it needs to be resurfaced. Changing the entire clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing assembly now will save you big money in the future. Hope this helps you understand a little better.
