If you have a laptop and your sole purpose for this tablet is to read books, then go ahead and get a Nook Tablet. The Kindle Fire is a piece of junk, so let's dismiss that.
Now if you want a good quality, movie watching, music listening, game playing, book reading, web browsing, app downloading, easy to use, and overall amazing tablet, then the iPad 2 is for you. It's the king of all tablets and does the most out of all of the others. You can download apps that make it just as functional as a laptop.
It comes in white and black. I suggest the black. It looks very good, it's classic, and I find that the white one distracts me while watching shows and movies. The black also looks very nice with what ever case or cover you use with it.
To take care of your iPad, keep your hands clean when using it and use a microfiber cloth to clean it every few days. An example would be a soft cloth used to clean glasses. Also don't drop the iPad,the screen is completely glass.
iCloud is a system that allows all of your data to be on all of your devices. For example, if I have iCloud activated and I take a picture on my iPhone, it's automatically on my iPad. You can choose whether you want to use iCloud and what data you want on all of your devices in the settings area of each device. If you only have one device, like and iPad or iPhone, then you don't have to use iCloud.
First, all of the devices you list have LCD screens. LCD screens are not good for reading - they generally cause eye fatigue. If you want something for reading, you want an e-ink device like the Kindle Touch. E-ink is crisp black text on a gray screen. It doesn't cause eye fatigue and the battery life is much longer, measured in days and weeks instead of hours.
However, if you want something that allows you to do web surfing, play games and watch video, you want an LCD tablet. Of the ones you list, the iPad is by far the best. There's no competition at all. It simply has more power, more features, more apps and a better user interface. IT's also the most expensive.
Of the remaining two, the Nook Tablet really isn't a contender. Barnes and Noble only sells ebooks - they don't sell music or video at all. If you want those things then you need to download them through third party apps. While the Nook Tablet brags about having 16GB of internal storage, they don't advertise that only 1GB of that space can be used for things that are not purchased from B&N. This means that not only do you pay $50 more for the tablet over the Kindle Fire, but you'll have to spend an addition $25-$50 for an SD card to store music and video if you have more than 1GB of it. At that point it makes more sense just to go for the iPad. Amazon sells music and video (bot streaming and for download). You can purchase directly from them or you can use the exact same apps as on the Nook. Anything purchased from Amazon is stored in their cloud for free. Another factor is the comparative stability of the two companies. Barnes and Noble has been suffering heavy losses, even with Borders out of the picture. They lost a lot of money last year and their stock has been performing badly. Investors are unhappy. They're talking about selling off the Nook division just to survive, and some analysts predict bankruptcy as early as 2013. This means the Nook's future is unclear. If they do go under, the books you purchased can't be transferred to another device, which means you'll have to pay for them again if you switch to the Kindle or another reader. Also, you may not be able to download them again if anything happens to your Nook, since the servers ill probably be shut down. Again, you could potentially lose your investment in ebooks if that happened. The Kindle is the more conservative choice at this point, at least until Barnes and Noble manages to straighten out their finances.
Don't get an iPad if your purpose is reading. I would recommend an e-reader with e-ink so it looks like the page of a book, not a computer screen. So I would get a kindle or a nook (not the color). But if it HAS to be the iPad 2, a kindle fire, or one of the nooks I'd get a nook (not an LCD screen one!)
If I were you I would choose the iPad 2, it's the best of the two. Some of my friends have nook colors and some have kindle fires. The iPad can do much more than the nook and the kindle. while the ipad can get both ibooks, kindle apps, and nook apps, all of them for free. iPad is the best choice!!!! Also iCloud is something new from apple that allows you to sync all of your apple devices together wirelessly
If all you want to do is read, then I'd go for the Kindle because that's what it's designed for, and it's cheaper than both the iPad and the Nook, although the Nook is also designed for reading too. I think the Nook has a higher memory capacity so it kinda depends on how much you read.
