Why does my house a/c blow warm air a few days after adding 4 gallons of coolant?
We have a one story brick home and paid $255 to have coolant added. The a/c guy said the coil had a leak but this would cool the home for awhile...HA! Obviously, we lost our money and the guy quoted us $900 take care of the problem. I know NOTHING about a/c and feel robbed! I wonder if going to another a/c guy will cost us $900 plus diagonosing the prob PLUS more coolant? I don't have a clue so if anyone DOES have clue plz let me know.

It can be difficult to tell how bad a leak is and how long adding freon might last. If you haven't had to add freon in the past and you're 2-3 lbs. low, adding freon could last you the rest of the season if the leak is not that bad. Unfortunately you must have a bad leak and they only get worse. It doesn't sound like they tried to tell you to add more freon again but advised you to replace the coils.
$900 isn't an unreasonable price for replacing and should include new freon. If you get the model # on your coil, you should be able to call other contractors and get a "ballpark" price on replacing and some will actually come out and give a free "second opinion".
Adding freon to a leaky system is ridiculous and probably illegal. It's like putting air in a flat tire before patching the hole.
The best thing I can recommend is to call the manufacturer of the AC unit and talk to them about it. There are a lot of AC repair ripoff outfits out there.
