I have a 95 F-150. 302 v8, automatic, has a distributor.. Using a spark tester, no spark. What is common failure? ty?

I don't know why Yahoo has limited space on these questions, but there isn't enough to fully explain the problems. I have a full compliment of tools and test equipment. My time was limited as I drove 4 hours to get to the truck to drive it home. Never did I realize that the truck would not start at all. I was ill prepared for working on the truck. I was hoping that if I got an answer soon enough I could go buy the part, fix it and drive i home. I bought a spark tester.

No spark. I did not have time to get any parts because the answer did not come soon enough. However, I glad I have what you all have given me as it gives me a line of troubleshooting. All answers are appreciated, it's just too bad that I can only award one person.

If your looking to buy something to fix the problem I'd suggest a test light would be in order. An ohm meter would be a better choice really. With that you could check the pickup in the distributor and you can also see if you are getting 12 volts at the coil, both in and out. If that all checks outgo to the electronic control box and check for input volts and the ground. If the power supply is good and the ohm tests are good then the electronic control would be the prime suspect. It would be great if you could get a test control just to be sure.

I ended up buying a new distributor from Ford. No one else had one like it. $200 bleah. I bought this F-150 from my brother in law. Now I find out both gas tanks leak, the knock sensor is deaf (yeah I said deaf) I have to be careful how far I push the foot feed or it will rattle its *** off and it won't downshift. I have a sh!tload of work to be done on this truck. Let this lesson be a story for all of you. NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM RELATIVES.

Most likely it could be the Ignition Control Module (ICM), a very common failure component in the DuraSpark II system. To test the ICM you'll have to understand the Gray colored of the ICM is called the Push Start Module (PSM) and the Black colored called the Computer Controlled Dwell Module (CCDM). They are not interchangeable. If defected: Buy one from FORD.
