Overheating issues.?

I have a 2001 Chevy Impala. Antifreeze was leaking and it was getting hot. Turns out I needed a water pump and I also got the thermostat changed. Now for some reason now when starting the car up, the temperature needle races up to the hot area. Any idea of what can cause this? Thanks!

Also there is some sludge in the radiator. Someone mentioned that I might just need a radiator flush because its not getting good circulation.

I am assuming that the thermostat was installed correctly. Had it done at a shop where I always go to.

Also, I went to the test the car this morning. At first, it seemed as though the needle wasn't moving that fast but I didn't even make it past 5 blocks before it went all the way up. One notch away from the red. By the time I made it back to the driveway, it was at the red.

Probably air in the cooling system. It will usually overheat in a heartbeat when that happens.

If the temperature needle shoots up to the hot area when the car is first started it's pointing towards a bad sending unit if the car has been running for a few minutes then take it back to the shop and let them check it out could have : bad/ improperly installed thermostat, bad head gasket among other things

Is the thermostat installed correctly and is it the right one? A thermostat installed backwards will cause overheating. The thermostat could be bad, too.

Hopefully, the engine wasn't damaged when it overheated. That could also be the problem.

If you have just turned your engine off the water will be left standing in a very hot engine. Upon restarting the temperature will be high until the pump gets the water circulating again.
