I had only ever heard of first, second, and third degree burns. But a quick google search showed that there is a fourth degree, which would be the worst.

Third is burning or charring of the flesh. It can't get worse than that.

The worst I'm aware of is the 6th degree burn, which even starts to char the bone.  Typically 5th and 6th degree burns are fatal.

Third degree is the most severe classification in some classification systems. It's a burn affecting all the the layers of skin, the epidermis and dermis.

Burns this bad that have also damaged the underlying bones, muscles, and tendons are sometimes included as third degree but sometimes differentiated as fourth degree. The burn site appears white or charred, or as in your example, is simply burned away. There is no sensation in the area since the nerve endings are destroyed.

Just to further complicate the degree system, some classifications limit fourth to not involving bone and muscle but charring all layers of skin, fifth is muscle, and sixth to the bone.

In terms of treatment, anything that's a fourth degree burn or worse is a medical emergency and requires long-term treatment (and most likely rehabilitation and counseling), so how it's labeled when it's horrific is of less medical importance that separating first, second, and third.
