Raccoon Bait? What's the best bait to trap a raccoon in a (humane) trap?

I've got a big, healthy, and beautiful (24" and 24 pound!) raccoon terrorizing my back yard and eating my pet chickens. I want to catch him in my (humane)possum trap and move him back to the woods. What's a raccoon's favorite food that'd lure him into the trap? (He's not rabid...just a suburban raccoon...and the city animal control people aren't interested in him and even my cats ignore him.)

Get some dry dog food and create a trail leading into the trap. Put a piece of raw meat (doesn't have to be big) inside the trap on the other side of the triggering platform.

Raccoons can be horrible if they take a liking to your flock. I've seen them pry apart chicken wire or partially drag birds THROUGH the wire. They can be terrible to deal with. This time of year, there is a very good chance you are trying to trap a mother coon who is feeding her young, which means releasing her away leaves the babies to starve and die. If you catch a female, she would still be in milk at this time and the teats would be visible along her stomach. If it's a male, you're safe - they don't help raise the young. On a sidenote, raccoons that are trapped are considered a major rabies risk and trappers will not relocate them. In Ohio (where I live), they have to be euthanized. If you plan on relocating it, I wouldn't recommend handling the animal at all, and please keep in mind that it may be illegal where you live. If you feel you are dealing with a female caring for her young, you may have to work more on reinforcing your poultry housing than on trapping the animal. A friend of mine got so frustrated with raccoons killing his bantams that he ran a hot wire (electrified fencing) around the top of their aviary and it worked like a charm. Also, instead of chicken wire, hardware mesh is much stronger, and it does not allow a raccoon to reach through to grab your birds. Raccoons don't like human or dog scent, either - so if you have a dog, you may want to start walking it close to the poultry house and allowing him to spread his scent to help deter the predators. Hope this helps!

You can trap him and move him out, but odds are he will just come back. Raccoons are very smart and witty. If there is an area that they consider a buffet, they will just keep coming back to it. (My uncle owned one that would slip out at night and toddle off to the local chinese food joint that fed him.)

Find a safe raccoon repellant for your yard. (The link below lists a few types).

Eventually he will realize that your place is just too much work, and find the next path of least resistance.

Kudos to you for not wanting to hurt him!

Open up a can of tuna, and put it in the trap. Worked for us a few years ago.

If I catch a coon in my live trap... It will not come out of the trap alive!!!

sunflower seeds. The kind you use in bird feeders. Racoons love them.
