Is there an easy way to use the heat escaping up my flue ?

We have a fireplace w/insert, but surely there is an easy way to catch and re-use the heat going up the flue. Also, we have a propane water heater, and the amount of heat going out the exhaust is enormous, surely it can be used somehow... thanks for any ideas!

No. You need the heat to rise up the chimney to carry the flue gas, or the flue gas will condense the water out rotting out the chimney or you will spill flue gas into the house allowing CARBON MONOXIDE, sulphuric acid, nitrous oxides into your house, probably killing you in the process.

If you had more efficient appliances and get rid of the 60% percent efficient fireplace thing you could capture some of that heat and it would be usable. That is the efficiency part of the appliance.
