Ok... you like Harry Potter and now want something similar. I felt exactly the same way after finishing the latest HP novel. So, i read Leven Thumps and the Gateway to Foo! Absolutley excellent!! It has magic, it has comedy, it has a teenage boy and a teenage girl who are discovering hidden powers... just wonderful! I recommend it! I also agree with the other people who have suggested Eargon and Eldest and Inkheart and Inkspell.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman (The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass) - young kids dealing with magic in an alternate Britain-definetely worth the read

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke - young kids running around Venice - some magic - also a great read

    E. Nesbit - Edward Eager freely admits to copying her style and no wonder, because she's amazing. All her books have to do with ordinary children who encounter magic in the course of their daily lives. Her greatest book is The Enchanted Castle.

Also by Nesbit: The Five Children and It, The Phoenix and the Carpet, The Story of the Amulet, The Magic City, and a number of others that are harder to find.

If you enjoy stories about magic, perhaps you might look into the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix. (Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen). The first concerns a young woman whose calling it is to put the dead raised by necromancers down. It also features a sarcastic, talking cat who is more than he appears to be (but I won't spoil it for you!)

All three books are excellent, I believe Sabriel in particular has won several literary awards.
