Garbage Men vs. Doctors (in general)?
Why do people GENERALLY look down on garbage men but hold doctors in high esteem? Sanitation is critically important to society and good garbage men are hard to come by. Medical care is too, but doctors are a dime-a-dozen. (Funny answers and jokes are welcome, too...I'm not complaining...just curious about others' thinking on the philosophy of social stature.)

Well, intelligent people do not look down on anyone. A persons self worth is not measured by the career they have, the money they make, the car they drive, the social status they have etc. Insecure people with low self esteem judge others, group other and rank others. It is an attempt by the persons whom are judging to help make themselves feel more adequate by placing themselves on a higher pedestal. Do not be distraught...the higher they are on the pedestal the further they have to fall. All people have equal value. The heart is not more important than the brain. The fingers are not less important than the ears. Differences enable us to all serve a purpose. Together we are whole. Divided we are not. Good subject! Thanks!

Although you have to be in good physical shape to be a garbage man, most people feel that anyone can get this job. There is no real skill or expertise.
But since Doctors know things that other people don't. They are much more valued. Just like lawyers or accountants.
If you hold information that other people don't know. Or if you have the legal ability to prescribe medication or perform surgery... things if done by the layman would be illegal. Then you weild a sort of power.

If you are in pain or have a medical emergency, I dont think your worrying to much about your garbage pick up... On the other hand check out what happened during the garbage strike in NY city back in the 70s... every job has importance

capitalistic system creates its own culture demanding its people to evaluate everything with money. as the cost of training a doctor to the system is much more higher than the garbage men's, their salaries are higher, so that they deserve much more respect!!! noone is underestimating how hard is to become a doctor, but respect is a feeling that should be fed by other criterias. 'cos life can't go on without any of them. have you ever seen how a city can look (and smell) if the garbage men go on strike even for two days!!!

I'm guessing cause you don't need 8 (?) years of graduate school to be a garbage man. I know what you're saying though. That's like Why do teachers get so little when an athlete gets millions?

Being a garbage man is one of those dirty jobs that our society needs in order to exist. But no matter how much money you can make at it, because it's dirty it will always be seen as low class.
