Do you feel your religious (or non-religious) beliefs have worked against you on a job before?

Feel free to explain.

PS: I would especially love to hear from Schneb, but I see he is not available . . . . hmmmmmmm . . .

It has become difficult because even though I'm Neo-pagan, I don't strictly follow the Wiccan holiday calendar. I'm a member of a small interfaith pagan group that holds big meets twice a year for 3-4 days at a time, and I've had trouble getting that time off. Even though company policies say that they don't discriminate based on religion, and that religious holidays will be given off, it becomes a problem because I don't celebrate strict holidays. Holidays are whenever we can book the site and get together.

I can work all day Christas Eve, Christmas Day, Easter, etc, when everyone else is gone and they smile and nod, but when I point out that everyone gets their major holidays off as a matter of course, then I'm causing trouble. I actually had to quit one job over it, and at another I had to speak to my bosses bosses boss in order to get the time off.

Not everyone in the world follows calendar dates in their spirituality, but since this mode of thinking is ingrained into Western thought, I'm constantly having to fight about it at every job I am at. It was a problem when I was in college too, certain departments refused to give me religious exemption from class for those 3-4 day weekends, even though they would give it to other kids all the time. If a Catholic wanted off for Ash Wednesday or a Jewish kid for Yom Kippour, they didn't flinch. I want off for Halloween, and suddenly it is a problem and I have to talk to the department head about it.

Yes. There is a large mormon infrastructure in the managemet of my workplace and my city. In younger years, I was openly critical of the mormon religon. This was my own stupidity.

In later years, I've minimized the damage by learning to be more understanding and widening my horizons. I have seen many atheist friends passed over. In one recent interview of ~30 applicants, seniority, experience, education, references and interview performance was all put the wayside in order to allow the only 2 mormons in the group to be one of the four successful appliacants. They are great people, but were not nearly as qualified.

My uncle realized this about my city years ago, and converted to mormonism strictly for the networking. He is now a millionaire.

I will never go that far, lol. I don't entirely blame them, either. They simply have their beliefs. I feel the fault lies in the structure of management. There should be rules which allow the best applicants to have the best odds.

Yes - well, my religious practices more than my religious beliefs, really.

I keep Shabbat - I don't work from Friday at sunsown until Saturday night. That means that I have to leave on Friday with enough time to make it home to cook and get ready for Shabbat. This means that there are some jobs I just can't take, but even when it shouldn't be an issue, it sometimes becomes an issue.

Against me by some co workers, 100% for me by management and business owners, NEVER talk about your faith on company time, EVER!
