Child sacrifice as religious practice?

Today's OT Scripture reading included Abraham's readiness to sacrifice Isaac. Apparently this was practised by some of the tribes in Abraham's day as a religious offering. It made me think about abortion today.

Most people would be up in arms with a religion that asked for child sacrifice. Most people in the western world would claim to think for themselves rather than blindly follow the dictates of any authority.

I think women who have an abortion do so with regret. My question is; what higher purpose is being served by having an abortion? And would the women (and the father if consulted) who have taken this course of action, still hold that for them, that higher purpose, is still more important.

Update:

To make my question clearer:

People choose to have an abortion for their own reasons. Do they still think those reasons are more important than the human life that was terminated?

The higher purpose in permitting it is to affirm that every person should shall have full jurisdiction over what happens inside the boundaries of his/her body. Therefore by permitting it we are acknowledging that the freedom of a person to control their own body is more important than other considerations. However we are not endorsing the choices they make as "good". We are merely choosing not to intervene forcefully in a person's excersise of thier soverign rights over their body. In this light, persuasion and dialog become the tools of those who wish to stop the practice, not the threat of imprisonment or execution by the government (there are people out there who believe that it is murder and should be punished with death).

Your second question becomes irrelavent unless you believe that you or the government has a role in determining how a person should be permitted to exersise control over what goes on inside thier body.

Human sacrifice is ritualistic religious killing of a person in order to gain some favor with a God that they fear, in hopes that they will be granted some sort of boon from their god, such as good weather or reprieve from a plague. I don't see how anyone would have an abortion to please God, but fervently religious people NEVER fail to surpirse me!

For those who think it should be legal because a woman has a right to control her own body, that is so lame! We can control our own body(say no to sex) UNLESS our actions interfere with another's rights. Unborn babies are people and in this country, people are supposed to have the right to life(unless they have delibratly taken another's life, thereby forfieting their - the murder's - right to life).

For those who think it's ok to kill one of the victims of rape or incest, how many child molesters do you think are free today because they were able to get rid of the evidence? I know a girl who was constantly raped by her father. He took her for 5 abortions over the years, and kept right on with what he was doing. The girl is now so emotionally damaged by those abortions and the abuse that she is disabled. This is not an uncommon happening.

Finally, for those who think a woman should have control over her own body, IT'S NOT YOUR BODY THAT IS BEING TORN TO SHREDS or poisened or having it's brains sucked out. That body belongs to another person. Why can't people see that?

By the way, if you have bought the lie, had an abortion, and are now suffering because of your decision, there is help. Post Abortion Stress Syndrome is very common and there are Post abortion Councelling Clinics all over the country. They're confidential, non-judgemental, and free. Look in the yellow pages under Abortion Alternatives. They will know where these places are located and can help set you up with an appointment.

The God of the Hebrews did not accept human sacrifice--if you read the OT carefully you will learn that the practice of human sacrifice is why God allowed some groups of people to be wiped out, or for the Hebrews to completely separate themselves from people who practiced it. Abraham offering Isaac was just a test to see if he would completely trust God to do the right thing, and yes, also to drive the point home that human sacrifice is wrong.

Abortion does seem to be a modern day form of human sacrifice. In the Seventies, when I was still growing up, Roe vs. Wade passed because radical feminists wanted to sacrifice children to having careers and not having to stay home and bother with kids. It passed just before the cost of living jumped up radically to force married women to go out and work.

The story of Isaac and Abraham was told to indicate that God no longer wished children to be sacrificed. However, to connect this with abortion is inappropriate. Hebrew thought was that a child did not receive a soul until it breathed.

Of course if you want the father brought in on consultation before abortions, you might have to get permission from jail authorities for the mother to visit her rappist who is in for child molestation. Then again, perhaps that trip wouldn't be necessary. It could just be the step-father.

blinded and programmed by religious scriptures mankind has lost visions to realize the truth in totality.

Child is an innocent and has full faith in parents or the ones who love them.

sacrificing a child is punishing the innocent.

    No God punishes an innocent.

Those who care for religions more than the truth and justice are blinded by faiths which emerge from selfish aims and suffer from inner darkness.

Even if the whole world is up in arms it is the duty of every God fearing person to condemn the act of child sacrifice.

If you are so worried about the religious feelings of hurt than The religion you believe in is not worth it.

Better adopt the religion of LOVE and LOVE every creation so that you are loved by the God of reality visible all arround with or without eyes.Mraju69@yahoo.com

To answer your first question, that is pretty sick. Why would a good, loving, etc. god ask for a child sacrifice (and later say, only joking, don't worry) and why is it in the bible? To answer your second question, there is no religious reason for it. There are other reasons, all of which you already know, I'm sure.

Tsk tsk. I can see abortion in cases like incest and abortion.

However, if you really don't want a baby, don't be fornicating all the time, especially without precautions.

If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime.
