Do smokers realize how inconsiderate they are being?

This Q. is for both smokers and non-smokers. I can be outside, 100 feet away from a smoker, and I have difficulty breathing. I noticed that if I smoke a cigarette, its not nearly as bad as just being by someone who smokes, so a few times a year I have to have a cigarette just so that I can breathe. Its really weird, but its the truth. I think that's why smokers don't realize how bad second-hand smoke is: They are always smoking, so they don't notice the second-hand smoke! Any opinions/answers?

Update:

Okay point of clarification: I AM NOT BEING PARANOID...other people notice this too. My friends that smoke have no idea that they are so disrespectful, and my friends that don't smoke can't breathe when smokers are around. So your answers that say I am the problem will be ignored.

Update 2:

Just because you see a stream of smoke going away from you, doesn't mean that we can't smell it in every other direction too! Smokers are idiots.

Update 3:

Catnip's in the lead. She's the only one who actually answered the question so far. The rest have been insults. People are so awesome.

Update 4:

For the idiots out there who can't figure out what I'm saying: If I'm in a bar that is completely full of smoke, the only way to tolerate it is to leave or to have a cigarette. I usually leave, but if I can't leave for some reason...I can have a cigarette and then I no longer notice the second-hand smoke, which is worse than first-hand as we all know.

If you're insulting me, than you answer my question by saying that you have no idea that smokers are being inconsiderate. AGAIN-THIS IS YAHOO ANSWERS, NOT YAHOO OPINIONS, SO IF YOU CAN'T OFFER AN ANSWER GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

I guess it is difficult for smokers to appreciate the impact on others as they are addicted and have to satisfy their addiction. It is for this reason that smoke-free workplaces have become mandatory and Governments are putting laws in place to ban smoking from pubs and clubs. On February 28, 2005, the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control took effect. The FCTC is the world's first public health treaty. Countries that sign on as parties agree to a set of common goals, minimum standards for tobacco control policy, and to cooperate in dealing with cross-border challenges such as cigarette smuggling. Currently the WHO declares that 4 billion people will be covered by the treaty, which includes 92 signatories. Amongst other steps, signatories are to put together legislation that will eliminate second-hand smoke in indoor workplaces, public transport, indoor public places and, as appropriate, other public places.

It is not often appreciated that bars and restaurants are workplaces and people have to be exposed to tobacco smoke to earn a living. For that reason, I think that it would be better to patronise bars and restaurants that don't allow smoking rather than smoking so that you can breathe.

I think your question is quite foolish and some of the responses are quite ignorant. Yes, everyone does something that bothers someone else. I'm sure your AXE spray bothers other people around you, not just people that are smoking! Have you considered that or are you just concerned about yourself? Have you ever thought about someone's alergies or sinus problems that you've just increased by doing that? My point is that people can be rude no matter what they do. Do you get that? You have the person smoking, the person wearing too much body spray, the person who has bad body odor, the person driving while doing something else such as talking on a cell or eating, and people making ignorant comments! Someone is always going to be offended my something. I know plently of smokers that smoke in one place and one place only even if it means they go all day without one. You just classify all smokers as inconsiderate but you're just as inconsiderate. To the person talking about someone falling asleep with a cigarette..... living in an apartment you're at a risk for a lot of things such as someone leaving the stove on or a curling iron on.

I was working in a big room with six other women who were chain smokers. The smoke in the room could have been cut with a knife. If I opened the door slightly the manager would come and close it ( by now it was winter). I worked in this environment for three years. I am a non-smoker. Now I have a very bad cough that never goes away. The specialists said it could be lung cancer but there was no evidence. I've had the light put in my throat twice- it was clear. I have to cough like this for the rest of my life.

I have decided to sue all the people who's Cologne, perfume, deodorant, tailpipe smoke, wood stove burning, etc, have all caused my asthma attacks. A few of these lawsuits and maybe non-smokers would be a little more tolerant of smokers. They are not the only ones causing lung cancer. First Norway banned smoking years ago, and now their giving fines to people who come to work with perfumes and such. I guess America's rights are all going bye-bye.

yes, smokers know how inconsiderate they are, but they do not care. They know they create filth, which is why they throw their cigarettes out car windows, they are too lazy to clean the filth from their ash trays in their cars. They know it stinks, which is why they often hold the cigarette away from themselves, so it drifts towards others instead of them.

Need more proof? Just look at how many of them puff away around babies, including their own, not caring how bad the smoke is affecting the kids' lungs.

A few times a year you have a cigarette? So, aren't you contributing to the one thing you are complaining about? What if someone is offended by your second hand smoke? You make absolutely no sense...

I have the same trouble with smokers. At least with intravenous drugs, you don't hurt the bystander. I notice smokers hold the cig. out the car window, move so the smoke blows away from them. They seem to think it is nasty as well. It either doesn't dawn on them to quit or won't/can't quit?

Notice: if nicotine at those levels is about as dangerous as caffeine, the CO,cyanide, hurts your heart, tars cause cancer, emphysema, bronchitis,..etc.

    Is smoking the stupidest drug?

Never generalize about a "group" of people....I smoke - not around children or nonsmokers - not near/in public places. I clean up my cigarette butts & do not throw them on the street...I realize that there are more that do not do this...

However, you chastize smokers & smoke yourself to breath??? I think that you need to be on medication b/c you are ridiculous....

Sounds like you need to see a doctor about you not being able to breathe, and to me, it doesn't really make sense why you have to smoke a cigarette to be able to breathe.

Your just being paranoid its the same if you have a cig or not. Obivously you can breath better when you smoke so maybe you should take it up full time.
