What is God's will?

When we pray, "Thy [Heavenly Father] will be done on earth as it is in heaven," I used to think that it meant that Christians are ~giving~ God permission to do His (omnipotent) will, not only in heaven, but also on earth.... I wonder if it may mean that when God's will is done on earth, it is because faithful believers are committed to doing it.

So, how do we determine God's will? What is His will which is being done in His heavenly Kingdom, which we should use as a pattern here on earth?

Update:

There are a lot of good ideas suggested in these answers.

But I think it is a commentary on Christianity in general that every [believer's] answer is somewhat general and yet different from the others.

I was hoping (expecting) some more definitive responses... I'll put it to a vote....

The WILL of GOD is John 6:38-40

    6:38

For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

    6:39

And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.

    6:40

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

First, bitter people are the permanent boil on mankind's backside, so answerer #1 that would make you...?

Anyways, you've asked a very good question and it's awesome to hear your heart contemplating it. What do you think? Do you think you are doing God's will now? Is there anything in your life that you feel needs to change, or you feel peace with?

One of the best analagies of God's will I've ever heard is of a moving boat. If a boat sits in the middle of a lake and there are 10 streams leading out, is the boat going to go in the right direction? The answer is no, because it's not moving.

So what are you doing right now to practise God's will?

Well, what are you doing right now to improve your relationship with God? Reading the Bible? Praying regularly? Attending church? Feeding homeless people? Visiting the elderly? Volunteering? Being a nice person? Finding someone everyday to encourage (as Heb 3:13 instructs)? Think of something, anything, and ask yourself, "does this go against God?" If it does not go against God, and it sounds like a good idea, try it. Do it. Then go to God and pray about it. Ask Him for direction.

The Bible says in Genesis that God gave people dominion over all the earth - would you not interpret this to mean that it is our duty to invite God to move on the earth, seeing as He has given it to us to rule? God is all powerful, yet in His power he has delegated power to us. The New Testament talks about power being released through our words (check out Romans 8 amongst other passages), prayers out loud so to speak. Have you tried it?

Well, give it a try. Let us know how it goes for you.

As for patterns... God's too big to fit in a box. He's made a personalized walk of life just for you. Check it out.

You certainly don't sound "retarded" as some very IGNORANT people may think. And yes, religion may be causing wars and hatred among other ignorant people, BUT what the Lord's Prayer means is close to what you were saying. It is God's will that we TRY to follow the same plan on Earth that is being followed in Heaven. It's asking us to forgive when something bad is done to us, as our sins have already been forgiven by God, as he sent his only Son to die for us.

We are also asking Him to keep us away from temptation, so we do not commit the sins that the devil wants us to. Basically, He is asking us to stay on the straight and narrow and behave as well as we can. He is not asking for perfection, as no one is perfect. But we can try to live the way he WANTS us to live. If we live in His name, and do our best to be good people, He will take us into his Heavenly Kingdom where we will be happy and taken care of for eternity...

    GOD BLESS YOU!

I know that there are many roads to the Lord. I read his Bible (which consists of 66 books) and try to follow his rules. This begins with the Ten Commandments and many grand affirmations to the Lord's powers. I believe that from this marvelous book, I will survive all the ills of the earth. I want to be in that number "When The Saints Go Marching On."

    God Bless and Guide You.

Read the bible to find out God's will, and pay particular attention to things like the Ten Commandments, and The New Testament where Jesus tells us, sometimes cryptically, what he thinks we should be doing or not doing!

OH and to the person who said God was a fairytale, get over yourself, if God was a fairytale, how come so many people believe in him?

When we pray for Gods will on earth as it is in heaven we're praying for better conditions. Gods will is for man to live on earth in peace united in worship. Cause it's impossible to think that conditions are the same in heaven as it is on earth, Acts 14:33 says: "For God is a God not of disorder, but of peace." Ephesians 1:9,10 says Gods purpose is "to gather all things together again in the Christ, the things in heaven and the things on earth."

God has revealed what pleases Him in his law -love Him and love your neighbor as your self, do not steal etc. However the prayer is asking God that His will be done "on earth as it is in Heaven". In other words we are asking God to give us a heart that desires to obey Him in the same way the angels do. They delight to obey God and are eager to serve Him

To find out what Gods will is, you need to read the Bible. Its pretty cut and dry. I am learning that myself. The Bible is Gods book of guidlines. His word tells us what he wants of us, how we should live. We are all sinners, and he has given us his word so we may repent and belive on him. He was brutaly murdured for us, nailed to a cross. And we tand to make religion a hard concept. But really the Bible is all we need to know what our heavenly father wants from us.Did you know that "religion" means service to GOD? yup, it means just tjat. And we all can not claim true religion. We must give up ourselves to the LORD. Surrender all of ourselves to his way.

    right here: 1 Thessalonians 4:3

    3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;

4 that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,

    5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;

6 and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you.

7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification.

8 So, he who rejects this is not rejecting man but the God who gives His Holy Spirit to you.

I dont know what Gods will is. . . but I can tell you this.

As its above, its below. As its dark, its light....balance my friend, is the key, to be able to find the eternal wisdom by being free of choosing and not being controlled by others, is how we actually get closer to Gods will. He or She wants us to be free. Are you free ? .. Freedom is not being able to do what you want. Is being able to do what you need to do what is best for you and your surroundings... that is the essence of all religions and spirituality. And that is what God wants...for us to return to the path where we lost control over ourselves, cause ... He Or She gave us the opportunity to experience Divinity...in doing so, we discovered that we could be masters of our own existance, and in doing so, we were mislead by Power ...and then everything went down the drain..... but Gods will is for you to read this and become ONE WITH HIM....and learn to live with dignity and make this world nicer than the way youve found it when you were born. To respect everybody, to help, to assist the needed ones, to feed the hungry, to give to drink that who is thirsty...to share what you have, to become one with feelings, to enjoy the sun and enjoy the night, to love one another as He and She has loved you since the moment decided to create you... to treat well children and not let them starve, to love the elderly and make them feel warm...to pick the abandoned ones and bring them to a shelter and make sure they eat and they can be protected...to assist the ones that are lonely...to heal those who are sick... this is Gods Will.

If there is such thing as "GOD's Will" then there is NO such things as Free Will. Then why complain when you fail in life or evil acts takes place around you or when someone kills your dear one or something like Sept 11 takes place in USA. Accept it has GOD's Will!

Instead i strongly believe in KARMA & Free Will. In fact KARMA is generated from one's Free Will; it is our daily actions & habits that creates KARMA. And this self-generated KARMAs could either be of great help to one's future or become a great obstacle in one's life!
